Swann rose the hard way: he began as a common street thug, moving his way up through the ranks as a soldier, capo, and then boss.

He is a rival of [[Petro|Peter Pietro]]. The two men's organizations recently fought a bloody war for control of the drug trade, but reached an uneasy truce after Swann's lover was killed. The truce still stands, but could break at any time.

Court-martialed by the US Navy, he was serving a long sentence in a military prison for multiple murders when [[Petro]]'s influence gained him his freedom. Petro, knowing his father from the old days, hired him as his chief enforcer, and he rose to the top of the underworld scene. He often battled the vigilantes in the New York crimefighting community, including [[Shadow]] and [[Manhunter]]. When Petro was convicted of racketeering, Killinger was also given a long sentence. As [[The Terror]] absorbed the knowledge of many dimensions, destroying them in the process, it also absorbed beings to work as its servants.
