Though often compared to the earlier Golden Age villain Piledriver, Donaldson is a far crueler and more openly mercenary figure — a career fighter who transformed personal ruin into a weapon. Old, scarred, and still dangerous, Piledriver II survives by proving over and over that age has not made him weak. Only meaner. == Underground Fighting Career == Before entering the criminal underworld fully, Bernard Donaldson built his reputation in illegal pit-fighting circuits operating throughout the East Coast. Fighting under the nickname Dank, Donaldson became infamous for overwhelming physical strength, savage endurance, and a willingness to injure opponents permanently if necessary. Unlike trained martial artists or disciplined boxers, Dank fought like a wrecking machine. Crowds loved him. Doctors hated him. Bookmakers made fortunes off him. For years, Donaldson dominated underground matches through sheer brutality and intimidation. Then someone arranged a fight he was never supposed to win. == The Hand Injury == During a rigged match engineered by criminal interests, Donaldson’s right hand was catastrophically crushed by a rival fighter using concealed enhancements. The injury effectively ended his career overnight. Without fighting, Donaldson had little money, few allies, and no future beyond bitterness and debt. That was when representatives of the Cadre approached him. == The Piston-Fist == The Cadre outfitted Donaldson with an experimental cybernetic replacement weapon: a compact piston-powered mechanical fist capable of delivering explosive close-range strikes with devastating force. The transformation gave Donaldson not merely a replacement hand, but an entirely new identity. He adopted the name Piledriver II, consciously invoking the infamous Golden Age criminal Piledriver, though the two men possessed no direct connection beyond thematic similarity and mechanical violence. Unlike the original Piledriver’s crude industrial piston arm, Donaldson’s cybernetic weapon was more compact, modern, and optimized for brutal hand-to-hand combat. == Mercenary Career == With his new weapon, Piledriver II entered the criminal world as an enforcer, bodyguard, debt collector, and hired muscle. Though no mastermind, Donaldson proved valuable precisely because of his willingness to solve problems through overwhelming physical violence. His services became particularly popular among organized crime figures, black-market operators, and supervillain groups needing someone capable of intimidating both ordinary criminals and lower-level superhumans. Unlike many costumed villains, Donaldson treats criminal work as employment. Violence is simply his trade. == Technology == Piledriver II’s cybernetic piston-fist is a sophisticated close-combat weapon system incorporating: * High-impact piston acceleration * Reinforced cybernetic striking surfaces * Hydraulic shock amplification * Enhanced gripping strength * Armor-crushing impact capability At close range, a direct strike from the device can shatter concrete, crush bone, and severely damage powered armor. The mechanism also produces the signature explosive “hammer-strike” effect that gives Donaldson his criminal identity. == Skills == Though not formally trained militarily, Donaldson is an extremely dangerous physical combatant. His abilities include: * Pit-fighting experience * Street fighting * Close-quarters intimidation * Enhanced cybernetic combat techniques * High pain tolerance and endurance Years of underground fighting made Donaldson exceptionally difficult to frighten or physically discourage. == Personality == Piledriver II is crude, greedy, cynical, and intensely proud of his reputation as a fighter. Unlike philosophical villains or ideological extremists, Donaldson’s motivations are brutally straightforward: money, survival, and reputation. He fears aging deeply and compensates by embracing violence even more aggressively than in his youth. Donaldson constantly seeks opportunities to prove he remains the toughest man in the room. Even when that room contains superhumans. Despite his brutality, he possesses a rough professional code regarding contracts and payment. Betray him, short him money, or insult his toughness, however, and negotiations usually end with somebody going through a wall. == Legacy == Piledriver II became one of the recurring blue-collar enforcer villains of the modern era and an occasional adversary of Shadow and other street-level heroes. His stories carried forward the industrial-brute aesthetic of the original Piledriver while grounding it in modern underground crime, cybernetics, and mercenary violence. Because Bernard Donaldson never wanted respectability. He wanted fear. And thanks to the piston-fist bolted onto his arm... he usually gets it. </div> CCNav
