== Faiths and Powers ==

Religion in the Sigil Lands is not a single pantheon divided neatly among competing temples. The '''Powers''' are ancient beings or principles encountered through story, worship, miracle, tradition, and experience, and different peoples may know the same Power by different names, interpret its nature differently, or disagree about whether two traditions refer to the same being at all.

Faith shapes kingdoms, wars, marriages, burial customs, law, charity, kingship, and ordinary household life. Yet belief is rarely simple, and even where people agree that a Power exists, they may disagree profoundly about what that Power wants.

== The Makers and the Powers ==

The oldest cosmologies speak of the '''[[Sigil:Makers|Makers]]''', beings associated with the shaping of the world and the mysterious force called the '''[[Sigil:Saël|Saël]]''', the Breath of the World. The Powers belong to a later order of existence, though theologians dispute whether they are children of the Makers, inheritors of their work, manifestations of deeper truths, or something stranger still.

Whatever their ultimate nature, the Powers do not simply command mortal minds. They may teach, tempt, bless, inspire, threaten, reveal, and offer grace, but the choice of what to do with such influence remains mortal.

== [[Sigil:The Triad|The Triad]] ==

The Triadic Faith is among the most influential religions of the Rhone kingdoms. It centers upon three Powers whose virtues are understood as complementary: '''[[Sigil:Inglorian|Inglorian]]''', associated with strength, honor, courage, kingship, justice, and the proper use of power; '''[[Sigil:Ardis|Ardis]]''', associated with mercy, healing, nurture, renewal, and compassion; and '''[[Sigil:Vannimar|Vannimar]]''', associated with wisdom, memory, learning, judgment, and foresight.

Together they express a religious ideal in which no single virtue is sufficient. Strength without mercy becomes tyranny, mercy without wisdom may become folly, and wisdom without courage accomplishes little. Triadic traditions differ greatly between kingdoms, and Merant, Angharais, Calalais, Sarrivel, and Rhess may all honor the Three while disagreeing about doctrine, ritual, hierarchy, and emphasis.

There is no single ruler of the whole faith. Merant is its sacred heart, not its Rome.

== [[Sigil:The Old Faith|The Old Faith]] ==

Before the spread of the Triad, the Rhone honored a much broader collection of Powers, local spirits, ancestral customs, sacred places, and seasonal rites. These traditions survive collectively under the loose name '''the Old Faith'''.

In some regions the Old Faith has nearly disappeared, while elsewhere it remains vigorous. In still others, old customs and Triadic practice have blended so thoroughly that separating them would seem pointless to the people who actually observe them. Old shrines stand beside newer temples, and a farmer may attend a Triadic holy day while still leaving an offering at a spring his grandmother taught him never to neglect.

== [[Sigil:Lalochai|Lalochai, the Laughing Knife]] ==

Lalochai is trickster, jester, satirist, mocker of pretension, and champion of wit over strength. He has no respect for persons merely because they wear crowns, robes, armor, or impressive titles, and his stories delight in the humiliation of the pompous and the triumph of those clever enough to escape stronger foes.

Sometimes his jokes conceal deadly serious purposes; sometimes they do not. The wise are expected to know the difference, which is one reason Lalochai's lessons can become maddening.

He is particularly beloved among the [[Sigil:Tobon|Tobon]], for whom cleverness and timely misdirection have often been necessary tools of survival.

== [[Sigil:Korda|Korda the Gatherer]] ==

Korda is associated with death, burial, the gathering of the fallen, and the duties owed to those who have passed beyond mortal life. His worship persists in funerary traditions even where other parts of the Old Faith have faded.

Death in the Sigil Lands is not merely an ending but the creation of obligations. The dead must be remembered, named, buried, burned, entombed, sung, or otherwise properly given over according to the customs of their people. Neglect those duties, and memory may not be the only thing that lingers.

== [[Sigil:Rhugash|Rhugash the Marauder]] ==

Rhugash is strongly associated with the Uragh and especially with the traditions of Kuragh Torrh. He is a Power of battle, courage, flame, open truth, and the testing of hearts.

Among his followers, deception committed before the sacred fire is not merely dishonorable but spiritually corrupting. Rhugash is terrible, but not simply evil, and like many Powers of the Sigil Lands he is poorly understood when reduced to the moral categories of his enemies.

== The Faith of the Gholibin ==

The religious traditions of the [[Sigil:Gholibin|Gholibin]] are inseparable from their long history of survival. They once served the Dragha in ancient ages, and memories of those relationships linger in myths, jokes, warnings, taboos, and contradictory stories.

Modern Gholibin religion is neither simple obedience to the Powers nor despair before fate. Their answer to an unpredictable cosmos is '''skûr''': fortune does what fortune does, the world is dangerous, and one may die despite every precaution. The proper response is not necessarily solemn resignation. Sometimes it is mockery.

Gholibin jesting therefore possesses a religious quality all its own: laughter as defiance before a universe that refuses to explain itself.

== [[Sigil:The Way Of Sun And Stars|The Way of Sun and Stars]] ==

The Way of Sun and Stars is an older religious tradition preserved in portions of the Sigil Lands. Its customs, sacred stories, observations of the heavens, and understanding of the Powers differ markedly from Triadic teaching.

Its influence was once far greater, and echoes of it remain even in places where its formal institutions have disappeared.

== [[Sigil:The Iron Covenant|The Iron Covenant]] ==

Not all religious traditions of the Sigil Lands are benign. The Iron Covenant represents a harder and darker understanding of divine and mortal power, and its history intersects with ambition, domination, sacrifice, and the belief that strength justifies claims ordinary morality would forbid.

Even where outlawed, such beliefs have never entirely vanished.

== The Seylandri and the Saël ==

The [[Sigil:Seylandri|Seylandri]] do not understand religion in quite the same fashion as the Rhone. Their sacred life centers upon the '''Saël''', the Breath of the World, and the harmony linking living things.

Song, silence, memory, craft, and contemplation are inseparable from Seylandri spiritual practice. A sacred grove may serve where a Rhone expects a temple, and a chord may serve where another faith expects a prayer. For the Seylandri, the distinction between religion, art, philosophy, and magic is often an artificial one.

== The Vulkah and the Nameless ==

The [[Sigil:Vulkah|Vulkah]] preserve their own traditions concerning Powers whose names are not casually spoken. Their religion is bound to memory, endurance, ancestors, the Deep, death, and the mysterious history of their emergence from beneath the world.

Among them, silence may itself be an act of reverence.

== Saints, Eidra, and Holy Things ==

Between mortal worshippers and the Powers stand many traditions concerning saints, divine servants, sacred relics, visions, and supernatural messengers. The '''[[Sigil:Eidra|Eidra]]''' are servants of the Powers whose precise nature is the subject of considerable theological argument, while saints may be universally known or honored only in a single valley.

Holy objects range from celebrated relics preserved in great temples to household charms whose origins no scholar could trace. In the Sigil Lands, the sacred is seldom entirely tidy.

== Faith and the Gift ==

The Power called the '''[[Sigil:The Gift|Gift]]''' is one of the great Saëlic disciplines and is associated particularly with abilities understood as bestowed through a relationship with the Powers.

The Gift is not simply a catalogue of convenient miracles. Grace has demands, power has consequences, and no Power is obliged to behave like a spellbook.
