'''Tael Neydra''' is the fallen heartland of one of the oldest Rhone realms, a mountain kingdom conquered by the [[Sigil:Vorghol|Vorghol]] and held beneath the unnatural darkness of the [[Sigil:Shroud|Shroud]]. Once it was the realm of [[Sigil:Brannais|King Brannais]], the great war-thane of the Warg Years who united three small Neydrai realms, raised the Palladion, kindled the Blue Flame, and established the kingdom whose memory would endure long after his death. For centuries afterward Tael Neydra stood among the strongest lands of the Rhone, its name associated with kingship, shield-walls, mountain fortresses, and the ancient Palladian tradition.

That age ended centuries after Brannais, when [[Sigil:Malivare|Malivare the Pale]] and the necromancer [[Sigil:Xoth Ishali|Xoth Ishali]] broke the old royal order and brought the central kingdom beneath the Shroud. The Palladian defenders were destroyed, the surviving people subjected to a new ruling order, and daylight itself weakened or extinguished over much of the land. Tael Neydra has remained under that shadow ever since.

To the Vorghol it is a dominion. To neighboring realms it is an enemy country and the source of raids, war, and generations of fear. To the Rhone who still live beneath the Shroud, however, it remains something simpler and more difficult: home.

== The Shroud ==

The defining feature of modern Tael Neydra is the '''Shroud''', the alien darkness stretched across much of the central kingdom. It is neither weather nor ordinary cloud, but a transformed sky under which daylight is weakened or absent, allowing Vorghol to move where the naked sun would otherwise burn them. At the borders of the Shroud, ordinary day fades into a dim and uncertain twilight; farther inward, that twilight deepens until lamps may be needed at noon and the distinction between morning and evening becomes almost meaningless.

The darkness is not uniform. Some days possess a grey, diffuse glow through which distant ridges can still be seen, while others descend into murk so complete that even familiar roads become treacherous. Winds move strangely beneath it, mists linger in valleys long after they should have burned away, and the behavior of birds, livestock, and wild animals often gives warning of changes in the air before human senses detect them. Foreign soldiers commonly find the place profoundly disorienting.

Tael Neydrans have lived beneath it for generations. They know its shades, its silences, and the subtle differences between one kind of darkness and another. What outsiders experience as supernatural terror has, for many inhabitants, become the weather of ordinary life.

== The Land Beneath ==

Tael Neydra was difficult country long before the Vorghol came. Mountain chains divide it into steep valleys, upland plateaus, river gorges, dense forests, and isolated settlements connected by roads that wind through narrow passes and along cliff faces. In the age of the old kings this terrain made invasion costly. Under the Shroud it has become still more formidable, because darkness magnifies every advantage of local knowledge and turns even modest distances into logistical hazards.

Roads vanish into black valleys, paths fork beneath forest cover, and mountain passes provide natural killing grounds for defenders who know where an army must travel. A force unfamiliar with the country can spend days moving through terrain whose inhabitants cross in hours, while the Vorghol themselves suffer none of the ordinary limitations imposed by daylight and require less rest than mortal soldiers. The same geography that helped the Vorghol secure their conquest now also gives the living places in which to hide, resist, bargain, evade, and survive.

This is one reason repeated Crusades have failed to produce a decisive occupation of the kingdom. Mortal armies can win battles at the Shroud's edge, and at times have done so spectacularly, but every mile deeper into Tael Neydra increases the burden of supply, reconnaissance, communication, and exhaustion. The land resists conquest almost independently of who presently rules it.

== Dolgur ==

The capital of the Vorghol dominion is '''Dolgur''', once a Rhone city and now the administrative and ceremonial heart of Malivare's rule beneath the Shroud. Its old fortifications, courts, towers, and noble houses have been adapted rather than erased, for the Vorghol have generally preferred to seize useful institutions rather than destroy them. Human clerks still keep records, merchants still sell food and cloth, craftsmen still work, and petitions still pass through offices whose authority now rests upon a deathless aristocracy.

This ordinary functionality is one of the most disturbing aspects of the city. Dolgur is not a landscape of perpetual slaughter, nor could a kingdom endure for generations if it were. Markets open, taxes are collected, children grow into adults, roofs must be repaired, quarrels are taken before judges, and grain still has to arrive from somewhere. Human beings continue to marry, work, bargain, cheat one another, mourn their dead, and seek small improvements in their circumstances while living under rulers who regard them simultaneously as subjects, servants, resources, and potential food.

The Vorghol did not destroy Tael Neydran society. They subordinated it, reshaped it, and learned how to make it serve them.

== King Malivare the Pale ==

The present ruler of Tael Neydra is '''King Malivare the Pale''', one of the oldest and most powerful Vorghol remaining in the realm. His authority rests upon age, fear, patronage, control of the institutions surrounding the Shroud, and the careful management of other Vorghol nobles whose ambitions must never be allowed to combine against him. Malivare understands that naked terror is a poor substitute for durable government, and so he presents himself not merely as a predator but as a king.

He maintains a court, grants favor, receives emissaries, rewards useful service, punishes disobedience, and preserves fragments of the old machinery of royal rule wherever they strengthen his own position. His government is cruel, but it is rarely careless. He understands that domination works most efficiently when it resembles order closely enough that ordinary people can arrange their lives around it.

Among the living, Malivare's name is spoken carefully. Among the Vorghol it is spoken with even greater care, for an immortal court is a place where grievances can mature for centuries. His greatest difficulties therefore do not come only from Crusaders and hunters beyond his borders, but from powers within Tael Neydra that he cannot entirely command.

The most dangerous of these is Varun the Shadow.

== Varun the Shadow ==

'''Varun the Shadow''' stands deliberately apart from Malivare's court. He began life centuries ago as an ordinary Rhone tribesman and became one of the earliest Vorghol, surviving long enough to transform himself into something other than a conventional noble of the Shroud. His power lies not chiefly in estates, formal rank, or ceremonial authority, but in the hidden networks beneath and between them.

Varun's influence is strongest around '''Camars''', though his true territory consists of information. Smugglers, thieves, servants, illicit traders, fugitives, guides, corrupt officials, informants, and people who simply know which cellar connects to which abandoned tunnel all feed into networks he has cultivated for generations. Varun knows where people disappear, which Vorghol owes favors, which mortal official is hiding a child outside the Shroud, which noble is hungry beyond prudence, and which forgotten road still bypasses a customs station.

He is almost genial about it. Varun laughs often, speaks philosophically about mortality, hunger, power, and the strange burdens of undeath, and displays little of Malivare's need for majesty. The ease of his manner makes him more unsettling rather than less, because everyone who deals with him understands that good humor has never prevented him from acting ruthlessly when necessary.

Malivare fears him. Varun knows this. Neither needs to say it aloud.

== Life Under the Vorghol ==

Most inhabitants of Tael Neydra are not Vorghol. They are ordinary people who farm, herd livestock, fish, work mines, carry goods, maintain roads, repair buildings, marry, raise children, and attempt to survive within a political order they did not choose. They pay taxes and tithes to mortal officials who ultimately answer to Vorghol masters, and some enter the service of those masters because such service offers protection, wealth, influence, or merely a better chance of keeping a family fed.

The occupation has endured too long for society to divide neatly between heroic resisters and willing collaborators. One village may tolerate a Vorghol steward because he keeps worse predators away. A merchant may profit from trade with Dolgur while secretly carrying messages for the High Hunt. A family may despise the regime but still send a child into administrative service because the alternative is poverty. Others actively seek advancement within the existing order and may eventually cross the boundary between mortal and Vorghol.

This ambiguity is one of the most difficult realities for outsiders to understand. Resistance is dangerous, cooperation can preserve lives, and moral choices that seem obvious from beyond the Shroud become harder when the consequence of defiance may fall not upon the person making the choice but upon an entire household or village.

Tael Neydra has had generations to become complicated.

== The Darklings ==

Among the distinctive communities of modern Tael Neydra are those outsiders sometimes call the '''Darklings''', Rhone whose families have lived for generations beneath the deepest portions of the Shroud. They are not a separate people in any biological sense, nor should they be mistaken for a supernatural race. They are Tael Neydrans shaped by environment, custom, and long adaptation to a country in which darkness governs daily life.

Many serve as night-guides, hunters, scribes, tunnel workers, smugglers, messengers, and interpreters of the conditions beneath the Shroud. They learn to judge distance by sound, recognize subtle differences in echo, notice air currents others miss, and read changes in darkness almost as a sailor reads weather. Outsiders sometimes mistrust them precisely because they move comfortably in places foreign soldiers find terrifying.

That suspicion is largely unfair. A person born beneath the Shroud either learns its darkness or remains helpless within it.

The Darklings learned.

== The Highmount Folk ==

In the central ranges survive the '''Highmount folk''', isolated communities whose valleys preserve more of old Tael Neydran custom than many settlements of the lowlands. The mountains do not make them safe. Vorghol can reach them, tax collectors still travel the principal roads, and raids periodically remind even remote villages that the kingdom remains occupied. Yet difficult terrain and strong local networks give such communities a degree of practical autonomy unknown closer to Dolgur.

Old songs survive there with unusual tenacity, as do household customs, remembered local loyalties, and traditions associated with Brannais and the Palladians. Some Highmount families maintain hidden tracks used by fugitives, smugglers, and hunters, while others refuse all involvement in resistance activities because generations of experience have taught them that bravery and survival are not always the same thing.

The people of the high valleys do not lack courage. They simply possess long memories of what courage can cost.

== The Stormlanders ==

Along the exposed western and southern approaches live the '''Stormlanders''', communities accustomed to bad weather, difficult agriculture, and some of the heaviest demands imposed by Vorghol authorities. These districts supply food, salt, fish, timber, livestock, and labor into the Shrouded interior, making them valuable enough that administrators often watch them more closely than poorer mountain settlements.

Stormlanders have acquired a reputation for fatalism, though they would probably describe their outlook as realism. A harvest may be ruined by weather, consumed by taxation, or taken by raiders before it ever reaches market. The people plant again because there is no alternative, and because continuing to plant is itself a refusal to let circumstances decide whether life will continue.

The kingdom survives in gestures like that far more than in any speech about freedom.

== The Maeron Isles ==

Off the coast lie the '''Maeron Isles''', whose inhabitants are often called the '''Freefishers'''. The islands stand beyond the easiest reach of central Vorghol authority and preserve strong traditions of maritime independence. Their boats carry fish, salt, messages, contraband, fugitives, and occasionally things everyone involved would prefer not to explain.

The Freefishers are neither crusaders nor romantic revolutionaries. They are islanders who dislike interference, especially interference involving their boats. At different times they have helped resistance networks, dealt pragmatically with Vorghol intermediaries, traded with outsiders, and ignored mainland politics altogether when doing so best served their own communities.

The sea gives them possibilities denied to many people beneath the Shroud.

They guard those possibilities carefully.

== The Memory of Brannais ==

No ruler has endured in Tael Neydran memory as completely as [[Sigil:Brannais|King Brannais]]. His age lies roughly five centuries before the fall of the kingdom, and that separation matters. Brannais did not fight Malivare, never saw the Shroud, and did not die defending Tael Neydra from Vorghol conquest. He belonged to the Warg Years, when the realm itself was young and the Neydrai were only beginning to become something larger than scattered warbands and petty kingdoms.

Later generations nevertheless remembered him because he represented qualities the occupied realm had lost. Brannais built unity without reducing his followers to servants. He bound people through oath, hospitality, reputation, reform, and personal authority, founded the Palladion, reorganized the shield-wall host, and became the great exemplar of Neydran kingship.

His sword '''Winterblue''' lies buried with him at [[Sigil:Skythane Mount|Skythane Mount]], in a tomb hidden by the Vulkah Khurn Deep-Hand. His Blue Flame outlived him by centuries, and songs of Brannais continued even after the kingdom that claimed descent from him had fallen.

The Vorghol conquered Tael Neydra.

They never conquered its memory of what Tael Neydra had once meant.

== The Blue Flame ==

At the old Palladion burned the '''Blue Flame''', a spectral fire requiring no fuel and said to have been kindled in the age of Brannais. It endured for roughly four centuries after his death, becoming one of the most enduring symbols of the old kingdom. Daughter-flames were carried from it to other places, including one that survived beyond the fall of Tael Neydra.

During the final siege of the stone Palladion, centuries after Brannais, the Flame began to flicker as the realm collapsed around it. The defenders understood what its capture would mean. Rather than allow the invading horde to possess the symbol, the last keeper overturned the brazier and denied it to them.

The original Flame vanished.

Among surviving Tael Neydrans, its loss became almost inseparable from the fall of the kingdom itself. The knowledge that a Daughter-Flame still survives is held by very few people and carries implications far beyond mere antiquarian interest.

== The Palladians ==

The '''Palladians''' began in Brannais's age as his Companions, the warriors and trusted followers associated with Pallados Ridge and the early Palladion. They were not Triadic paladins and did not originate as a holy order. Their roots lay in the Old Faith, personal loyalty, kingship, oath, and the memory of the men and women who stood beside Brannais during the Warg Years.

Over centuries that memory became institutionalized. The Palladians survived the death of their founder, altered with the kingdom around them, and eventually became one of the great martial traditions of Tael Neydra. By the time the kingdom fell they were among the principal defenders of the old order, and the final siege destroyed most of what remained of them.

The name nevertheless survived beyond Tael Neydra, changing in meaning as institutions descended from the old order spread and transformed. The Palladian Knights later encountered in Sarrivel were therefore distant heirs to a tradition already centuries removed from Brannais's original fellowship.

History has carried the name very far from Pallados Ridge.

== The High Hunt ==

The most famous organized resistance to Vorghol rule is the '''High Hunt''', a loose but enduring network of hunters, trackers, scouts, killers, guides, informants, and specialists trained to destroy Vorghol. It is not an army and could not survive if it behaved like one. The Hunt operates through small cells, hidden roads, safe houses, sympathetic households, concealed caches, and knowledge accumulated through generations of failure and survival.

Its hunters know where blackthorn grows, which ruins provide shelter from daylight, how particular Vorghol prefer to feed, and which stories told by frightened villagers are useful rather than merely frightening. Their work requires patience more often than heroics, and much of it consists of waiting, watching, following, and arranging circumstances in which a creature far stronger than any ordinary human can be killed.

Among the most feared of the hunters is '''Kane''', whose glowing sword and long record of Vorghol kills have made him a figure of legend even among people who have never met him. His former lover Meryth was turned into a Vorghol, and Kane ultimately killed her himself. That experience stripped away whatever romance he might once have attached to the Hunt.

The High Hunters are not holy warriors. They are people who do work most others cannot or will not do, and the work changes them.

== Kane ==

Kane's importance extends beyond his reputation as a hunter. He has become entangled in the larger fate of Tael Neydra through his history, his allies, and his connections to figures around whom hopes of eventual restoration have gathered. Yet Kane himself has never been most convincing as a courtly claimant or political visionary.

His concerns remain immediate and practical. Vorghol must be hunted. People must survive. The Shroud cannot remain forever. Questions of crowns, dynasties, and the eventual shape of a restored realm can be argued by people who live long enough to see such things become possible.

This quality makes Kane useful to allies and difficult to command. He possesses the temperament of a man who has spent too much of his life in circumstances where hesitation kills and titles are irrelevant.

== The Crusades ==

The neighboring Rhone realms have attempted repeatedly to destroy the Vorghol dominion, and each failure has added another layer of memory to the borderlands.

The '''First Crusade''' came roughly a generation after the fall of Tael Neydra, when the surviving realms still understood little about the Shroud or the enemy inside it. Alliances were limited, knowledge poor, and the campaign failed quickly before the crusading armies had penetrated deeply into the kingdom.

A generation later came the '''Second Crusade'''. Better prepared and more ambitious, it advanced beneath the Shroud and ended catastrophically when the allied host was ambushed in the darkness. The destruction of that army became one of the defining military disasters of the age and taught the surrounding kingdoms how profoundly ordinary assumptions about campaigning failed inside Tael Neydra.

The '''Third Crusade''', launched in the Age of the Comet, began more successfully. At [[Sigil:Blackwater Ford|Blackwater Ford]], near the edge of the Shroud, the allied forces of Angharais, Rhess, Merant, and other realms won one of the greatest victories ever achieved against the Vorghol, with [[Sigil:Henrick I|King Henrick]] personally rallying the host.

The victory proved that the enemy could be beaten.

It did not solve the problem of Tael Neydra.

Once the allied armies pressed into the mountainous interior, darkness, distance, disease, supply, terrain, and Vorghol mobility again began exacting their price. The war became slower, uglier, and more uncertain with every mile.

== The Crusaders and the Living ==

Foreign Crusaders often enter Tael Neydra expecting enemy territory, and in one sense they are correct. The realm contains Vorghol strongholds, armed retainers, collaborators, spies, and people whose fortunes depend upon Malivare's government. Yet it also contains farmers, shepherds, miners, children, healers, fishermen, widows, craftsmen, and entire communities whose ancestors were conquered centuries earlier and who have never possessed any realistic power to change the political order above them.

A crusading army that treats every Tael Neydran as an enemy strengthens Malivare by confirming everything his government tells the population about foreign armies. An army that assumes every Tael Neydran secretly awaits liberation is equally dangerous, because some inhabitants genuinely profit from the present order and others care more about surviving the week than restoring a kingdom they know only from songs.

Generations of occupation produce loyalties that do not fit heroic categories. A person may hate Malivare and fear the Crusaders. Another may cooperate with Vorghol officials while helping a cousin escape into the mountains. One village may welcome foreign soldiers, while the next remembers what happened when the previous army requisitioned its winter grain.

The living population is not a backdrop to the war.

It is what the war is supposedly about.

== Vorghol Rule ==

Vorghol society within Tael Neydra is itself divided by rank, age, estate, hunger, ambition, and old hatred. Malivare rules, but he does not possess every deathless noble beneath the Shroud as a simple servant. Ancient Vorghol hold estates, retainers, feeding privileges, political networks, hunting territories, and grievances that may have endured for centuries. Younger members of the kind seek advancement through service, intrigue, marriage-like alliances, violence, and proximity to powerful patrons.

Control of blood is political. Control of mortal labor is political. Access to Malivare is political. Even control of a safe route through the Shroud may become the foundation of a minor Vorghol fortune.

Immortality does not remove ambition. It merely gives ambition more time.

Rhone nobles may plot for years.

Vorghol may wait generations.

Varun regards much of this performance with amusement, though nobody should mistake amusement for disinterest.

== Blood and Transformation ==

Vorghol reproduce through forced or voluntary blood-drinking rather than through the bite itself. A mortal who is made to drink Vorghol blood may be transformed, and in Tael Neydra the possibility of transformation has become part of the political structure of the realm.

The practice has roots far older than Malivare. During the Great Wrath, the Dragha transformed Rhone barbarians into nocturnal hunters intended to stalk and kill Seylandri. Those first Vorghol were weapons of war, feral and terrible, but the weapon outlived the conflict that produced it. Over the centuries the transformed survived, reproduced their condition, accumulated knowledge, and became something far more organized than the creatures first unleashed in the elder war.

Some people still choose transformation willingly. They may seek power, survival, revenge, status, escape from age, protection for loved ones, or simply the chance never to be prey again. Others are coerced or deceived.

Tael Neydra has therefore learned an uncomfortable truth: monsters are not always created against their will.

== Destroying the Vorghol ==

The Vorghol are difficult but not impossible to destroy. Sunlight burns them brutally, which is the principal reason the Shroud matters. A stake through the heart or decapitation can kill them outright, and blackthorn stakes are particularly effective, though oak will serve when nothing better is available. Lesser Vorghol may collapse or crumble when successfully staked, while older creatures have survived wounds that would destroy younger ones.

The folklore carried into Tael Neydra by foreigners is often considerably less useful. Garlic, holy water, sacred symbols, invitations across thresholds, and similar tales offer no protection. The High Hunt has spent generations separating comforting stories from methods that actually work.

People who insist upon testing the distinction rarely become instructors themselves.

== Korda Beneath the Shroud ==

The clergy of [[Sigil:Korda|Korda the Gatherer]] occupy an especially difficult position in Tael Neydra. Korda is not the lord who causes death, but the keeper who sees those who die safely onward toward the Far Fields. The Vorghol violate that passage by refusing death and, in some cases, by preventing others from reaching it.

Grey Priests who remain beneath the Shroud therefore perform work that is simultaneously funerary, practical, and quietly defiant. They tend bodies, identify the dead, protect remains from misuse, oversee burial, and intervene wherever undeath threatens the proper passage of souls. In a land containing Vorghol, ghosts, necromantic relics, and old battlefields, a corpse is not merely something to mourn.

It is something that must be kept safe.

Even people with little interest in theology respect the Grey Priests for this reason.

Someone must ensure that the dead remain dead.

== The Old Faith ==

The [[Sigil:Old Faith|Way of Sun and Stars]] survives most strongly among mountain communities and families that preserve old Tael Neydran customs. The irony is obvious even to those who no longer practice it closely: a people whose ancestors knelt beneath sun, wind, and stars now live beneath an artificial night that hides all three.

The first sight of direct sunlight can therefore possess enormous emotional weight for those born beneath the Shroud. Adults who travel beyond its boundary may weep when the true sun strikes their faces, while children seeing an open blue sky for the first time sometimes react with fear before wonder. The experience need not be mystical to be profound.

For generations of Tael Neydrans, the open sky has become almost legendary.

== Relations with Other Realms ==

Roads still follow routes laid by mortal kings. Villages remember names older than Malivare. Songs preserve Brannais and the Palladians. Household customs survive whose original meaning has been forgotten. Ruined fortresses remain in mountain valleys, old cairns stand along roads now patrolled by servants of the Shroud, and the memory of the Blue Flame persists even where nobody living has ever seen it burn.

The Vorghol regime is therefore not Tael Neydra's replacement.

It is an occupation laid across something older.

That distinction is what makes restoration imaginable at all.

== Tael Neydra in the Age of the Comet ==

The Age of the Comet finds Tael Neydra closer to profound change than at any time since its fall. The Third Crusade has carried mortal armies farther than earlier attempts, the High Hunt continues its hidden war, and Malivare remains powerful without ever achieving complete control over the forces within his own dominion. Varun watches from the shadows, Kane continues to hunt, and beyond the Shroud the elder peoples are increasingly forced to confront responsibilities they had hoped history would bury.

None of this means liberation is inevitable. Tael Neydra has survived under the present order for generations, and systems that endure that long acquire roots of their own.
