== Faith and the Deep ==

Vulkah spiritual life is private, conservative, and closely tied to memory, stone, endurance, fire, and the unseen depths beneath the world. The Vulkah recognize the Powers as the great keepers of existence, but their religious language differs markedly from that of Merant or the Rhone kingdoms, emphasizing obligation and endurance more often than petition. A worshipper does not necessarily ask a Power to remove hardship, but may instead seek the strength, judgment, mercy, or clarity required to endure it without becoming diminished by it.

Sacred places are frequently architectural or geological rather than monumental in the southern fashion: a hearth maintained for generations, a chasm into which the dead descend, a spring rising unexpectedly through black stone, a hall in which an ancient oath remains carved, or a chamber preserved from the earliest fortress-city. Such places acquire sanctity through continuity, memory, and use rather than through grandeur. Foreigners sometimes mistake the privacy surrounding these rites for secrecy, but the Vulkah do not generally believe that everything sacred becomes more meaningful merely because more people are allowed to witness it.

Within this otherwise comprehensible religious world lies one of the oldest mysteries of Vulkah tradition: the beings called the '''Nameless Ones'''. References to them appear in inscriptions of great antiquity, in signs carved upon certain sealed chambers, and in a handful of old observances whose purpose is acknowledged without being fully explained. The Vulkah do not treat the Nameless Ones quite as they treat the familiar Powers, yet neither do they classify them as spirits, Eidra, ancestors, or creatures of the Deep. Their place in the order of things remains uncertain, and Vulkah religious thinkers have never produced an explanation that commands general agreement.

Some traditions hold that the Nameless Ones may themselves be Powers whose names were deliberately forgotten, concealed, or forbidden; others suggest that they belong to an older category of being for which later religious language possesses no adequate term. A few Vulkah teachings regard even the attempt to resolve the question as unwise, arguing that the ancestors may have preserved ignorance intentionally. The better-known Powers offer no clarification, at least none that mortals have recognized, and whether that silence has meaning remains as uncertain as the identity of the Nameless Ones themselves.

The Vulkah are generally more comfortable with this uncertainty than outsiders expect. Their culture does not assume that every surviving mystery represents a problem waiting to be solved, particularly when the mystery has persisted since before recorded history. Some doors were sealed for reasons no longer remembered, some names ceased to be spoken, and some warnings have endured even after the stories that produced them were lost. To the Vulkah, ignorance can itself be an inheritance worth handling carefully.
