# The Rhone

The **Rhone** are the most numerous of the Kindreds now living in the Sigil Lands. Their realms command much of the great rivers and coasts, their ships crowd the harbors, their farmers work broad stretches of settled country, and their languages and customs have become commonplace wherever merchants, soldiers, pilgrims, and travelers gather.

For this reason, outsiders sometimes speak of the Rhone as though they were a single people in the narrower sense: one culture, one civilization, one way of life.

Nothing could be further from the truth.

A Highland shepherd, a Northerling herder, a Maritimer sailor, a Lowland vintner, and a Stormlander fisher may all be Rhone and have remarkably little else in common. They may serve different Powers, obey different customs, speak in sharply different dialects, wear different clothes, eat different foods, and cherish histories in which the ancestors of one appear as strangers—or enemies—to another.

**Rhone is a Kindred, not a nationality or culture.**

The kingdoms came later.

## Names of the People

**Rhone** is the ordinary modern name of the Kindred.

Older songs, inscriptions, and lays sometimes call them **Wraeth**. The word belongs to an earlier age, when the ancestors of the modern Rhone were scattered among numerous tribes beyond and around the domains of the elder peoples. It survives particularly in ancient histories and poetry.

Thus the people transformed into the first Vorghol during the Great Wrath may properly be called Wraeth in an ancient lay. To call a modern inhabitant of Angharais Wraeth would sound markedly archaic.

The distinction is one of age and usage, not of separate Kindreds.

## The Long Arrival

The Rhone were not the first people of the Sigil Lands.

When the Seylandri and Dragha contended in the Great Wrath, the ancestors of the Rhone were still scattered peoples living beyond and between the domains of the elder Kindreds. They possessed chiefs, customs, songs, feuds, marriages, laws, and histories of their own, but nothing comparable to the great civilization of the Seylandri or the terrible power of the Dragha.

That may have been their salvation.

The Great Wrath destroyed things the Rhone had never learned to build. Seylandri tree-cities burned and fell from the canopy. Ancient forests died. Mountains were broken. Great Workings scarred places that remain strange even now. The Dragha diminished, and Seylandri civilization withdrew into grief and ruin.

The Rhone endured.

Over the centuries that followed, Rhone peoples spread through lands transformed or emptied by the catastrophe. This was neither a single migration nor a triumphant conquest. Tribes wandered. Settlements grew and disappeared. Peoples divided, joined, migrated again, adopted new customs, and sometimes forgot where their ancestors had come from.

They inherited a landscape filled with things older than themselves.

A Rhone farmer may plow beside a standing stone whose purpose nobody remembers. A village may use timbers or stones taken centuries ago from an unknown ruin. A road may follow a route first traveled thousands of years before the village beside it existed. A child's warning about a particular grove may preserve, in mangled form, the memory of something that happened during the Great Wrath.

The Rhone did not replace the elder world so much as grow among its remains.

## A Kindred of Many Faces

There is no single Rhone appearance.

Rhone populations have lived across an enormous range of country for centuries, from cold northern forests and mountain valleys to river plains, storm coasts, marshes, islands, and warmer southern lands. Complexions, hair, eyes, stature, and build vary accordingly.

Clothing varies still more. A courtier of Corvessa and a Northerling beneath a felt shelter could scarcely be mistaken for members of the same society.

The Rhone themselves notice such differences readily. Accent, clothing, hairstyle, jewelry, manners, food, and even the way someone saddles a horse or handles a boat may reveal where that person was raised.

Usually these distinctions matter more in daily life than Kindred.

A Rhessian meeting an Angharan is unlikely to think first, *Here is another Rhone.*

He is more likely to think, *An Angharan.*

And an Angharan Highlander may recognize something familiar in a Highlander from Rhess that neither sees in the Lowlanders of his own realm.

## The Many Rhone

Rhone diversity does not divide neatly along political borders.

Some identities belong primarily to terrain and old ways of life. Others arose through migration, occupation, commerce, or the peculiar history of a region. Many overlap. A person may be Lowlander and Rhessian, Riverborn and Angharan, Maritimer and Sarrivellan without finding anything contradictory in those descriptions.

Nor are these categories immutable bloodlines. They are peoples in the older sense: communities formed by place, livelihood, custom, kinship, and shared history.

### Lowlanders

The **Lowlanders** are widespread through the valleys, river plains, and agricultural heartlands of Rhess, Angharais, Sarrivel, Calael, and other settled realms. Farmers, craftspeople, merchants, townsfolk, and laborers predominate among them, although the great cities naturally contain every profession and social class.

Lowland life tends to be organized around settled fields, villages, markets, roads, guilds, temples, and the obligations of crown and lord. In many districts the agricultural year remains the great clock of ordinary existence: plowing, sowing, lambing, harvest, winter.

Lowlanders have a reputation for practicality and conservatism. A well-kept farm, a sound roof, a paid debt, and neighbors who know one's family are accomplishments worthy of respect.

Highlanders sometimes dismiss them as soft.

This opinion generally survives until the Highlander needs grain.

### Highlanders

The **Highlanders** inhabit mountain country and upland valleys across several realms, notably western Rhess, Merant, Tael Brannoch, and parts of Angharais.

Their communities are often smaller and more isolated than those of the plains. Herding, hunting, trapping, timber work, mining, and small farming are common. Old clan and household loyalties remain strong in many districts, as do customs whose origins precede the kingdoms that now claim the mountains.

Highlanders are famous for long memories. Old alliances matter. So do old betrayals. A dispute forgotten by a Lowland court may remain perfectly alive in a valley where everybody knows who cheated whose grandfather.

This reputation should not be mistaken for constant feuding. Cooperation is necessary in difficult country. Hospitality is correspondingly serious, and neighbors who quarrel bitterly may still come running when a roof collapses under snow.

They may argue among themselves.

The outsider who threatens one of them frequently discovers the distinction.

### Northerlings

The **Northerlings** are among the clearest surviving heirs of the older Rhone nomadic traditions. They range through the steppes and pine country of the north, following herds and seasonal routes rather than the borders drawn on southern maps.

Many are dark of skin and hair. Their camps rise and disappear with the seasons, and horsemanship is learned early. Their wealth travels with them: animals, tools, weapons, tents, harness, remembered routes, obligations, and the reputation of the household.

The Northerlings retain strong traditions of the Old Faith. **Busc the Hunter**, an avatar of Inglorian, is particularly revered, while smoke rites, bone casting, dreams, and other old practices remain part of religious life.

Southern Rhone sometimes call them primitive because they do not build cities.

Northerlings generally regard this as evidence that southerners have confused masonry with wisdom.

A person who can find water in bad country, judge weather from the wind, keep a herd alive through winter, and bring a household safely across hundreds of miles possesses skills that no palace education can replace.

### Maritimers

The **Maritimers** belong to the eastern and southern maritime world, particularly around Sarrivel and the waters of the Crimson Coast. Many are olive-skinned and dark-haired, although generations of movement through the ports have made rigid descriptions increasingly unreliable.

They are sailors, fishers, boatwrights, merchants, pilots, dockworkers, smugglers, and corsairs. Their communities face toward the sea. Children learn the practical language of rope, wind, tide, and hull from an early age because ignorance aboard a vessel can kill everyone.

Maritimers have a reputation for passionate argument, strong shipboard loyalties, and suspicion of distant authority. An oath given aboard ship may matter more than a document drawn up by someone who has never left dry land.

The Crimson Coast has carried Maritimers far from their home harbors. Maritimer quarters can be found in ports well beyond the districts where they predominate.

Not every Maritimer is a Red Reaver.

Quite a few would nevertheless know one.

### Riverborn

Along the Ais, Sedyr, and their tributaries live Rhone commonly called **Riverborn** or simply **Rivermen**.

Their world is neither wholly land nor water. Boatwrights, ferrymen, bargemen, fishers, pilots, traders, innkeepers, and riverside farmers depend upon waterways that can enrich one village and swallow another.

Political frontiers matter strangely along a river. A boat may pass through several jurisdictions in a day. Tolls change, banners change, wars begin and end, but cargo must still reach market.

Riverborn culture consequently prizes adaptability, bargaining, local knowledge, and a certain irreverence toward rulers. Their humor frequently concerns kings, taxes, floods, and the similarities between them.

The Ais has watched many crowns rise.

The ferrymen expect to outlast the present ones as well.

### Marshfolk

The **Marshfolk** inhabit fens, deltas, reedlands, and other wetlands, including country around the great river mouths and the marshes west of Mazirin.

Their settlements may appear inaccessible to strangers because accessibility is a matter of knowing the water. A channel navigable last spring may be mud this year; a patch of apparently solid ground may swallow a horse; a route invisible from the bank may carry a coracle safely for miles.

Fishing, trapping, gathering, reed-working, small-scale farming, and wetland trade sustain their communities. Outsiders frequently characterize Marshfolk as secretive or superstitious.

The Marshfolk would point out that strangers have a remarkable habit of drowning in places everyone local knows perfectly well to avoid.

Older customs persist strongly in some marsh communities, particularly those concerning local spirits, dangerous waters, burial places, and the proper behavior of travelers after dark.

### Freeholders

**Freeholders** are found particularly in Rhess and portions of the northern country. Their identity rests less upon terrain than upon the possession and defense of household land.

A Freeholder's farm is not merely property. It represents independence. Fortified farmsteads, extended households, neighbors bound by reciprocal obligation, and local militias form the basis of society in many Freeholder districts.

They have little patience for people who believe a title excuses incompetence. Work, oath-keeping, hospitality, and the ability to defend one's household carry more weight than elegant manners.

This attitude is particularly strong in Rhess, where the memory of rebellion against bondage remains fundamental to national identity.

Freeholders can be infuriating subjects.

Rhessian kings are accustomed to this.

### Hillfolk

Between the highest country and the broad Lowland plains are the **Hillfolk**, scattered through rolling uplands, lesser ranges, and rough country unsuited either to intensive Lowland farming or full mountain life.

Shepherding and mining are common, alongside woodland crafts and small farming. Hillfolk communities tend to be old and locally rooted. Their songs preserve archaic words and turns of phrase long vanished elsewhere.

They have a reputation for patience, slyness, and extraordinarily dry humor.

Lowlanders sometimes cannot tell whether a Hillfolk speaker has insulted them until several minutes after the conversation ends.

This is occasionally intentional.

### Roadborn

The **Roadborn** belong to the networks of roads, caravan routes, border inns, seasonal markets, and traveling camps connecting the settled realms.

They include drovers, messengers, caravan workers, itinerant craftspeople, peddlers, entertainers, and families whose livelihoods have kept them moving for generations. Their speech often borrows from several Rhone dialects, and their customs reflect the places through which their families have traveled.

Settled communities sometimes distrust them precisely because their relationships do not fit neatly into local structures of village and lordship.

The Roadborn have structures of their own.

Kin, traveling companions, remembered favors, trusted stopping places, marriages between families, and reputations carried along the road create a society less visible to people who remain in one place.

They are Rhone wanderers, but they should not be confused with the Tobon **Wanderfolk**. The resemblance is one of lifestyle, not Kindred or origin.

### Darklings

The **Darklings** are Rhone of Tael Neydra whose families have lived for generations beneath the Shroud.

They are not a separate Kindred, nor monsters touched by Vorghol blood. They are Rhone shaped by an extraordinary environment.

Darklings have adapted their lives to a country in which darkness governs ordinary existence. Night-guides, hunters, scribes, tunnel workers, smugglers, messengers, and others learn to judge distance by sound, notice changes in echo and air, and move confidently through conditions that leave outsiders helpless.

Much foolish superstition surrounds them outside Tael Neydra. Their comfort in darkness is taken for sinister knowledge, and their association with the occupied realm makes some outsiders suspicious of them.

A Darkling would answer that a person born beneath the Shroud must learn the darkness or remain helpless within it.

They learned.

### Highmount Folk

Within the central ranges of Tael Neydra are communities known as the **Highmount folk**.

They are related in culture to the broader Highland populations but have been shaped by centuries of isolation under Vorghol rule. Their valleys preserve household customs, songs, old loyalties, and traditions that have vanished from many of the occupied lowlands.

The mountains offer them protection, but never safety. Vorghol can reach the valleys. Tax collectors arrive. Raids happen. What the terrain provides is room: hidden paths, difficult approaches, and communities capable of managing much of their own affairs.

Some Highmount families aid fugitives or the High Hunt. Others refuse to do so.

Generations beneath the Shroud have taught them that courage and survival are not always the same thing.

### Stormlanders

Along the exposed western and southern approaches of Tael Neydra live the **Stormlanders**, Rhone shaped by a hard coast, severe weather, difficult agriculture, and generations beneath Vorghol dominion.

Fishing, salt-making, livestock, timber, coastal farming, rowing, and salvage sustain their communities. These productive districts also bear heavy demands from the authorities of the Shrouded interior.

Stormlanders have consequently acquired a reputation for fatalism.

They would probably call it realism.

One harvest may be ruined by weather. The next may be taken in taxes. Boats fail to return. Raiders come. Lords demand what remains.

The Stormlanders plant again.

That persistence has preserved more of Tael Neydra than any grand declaration of resistance.

### Freefishers

Off the Stormlands lie the **Maeron Isles**, whose Rhone inhabitants are commonly known as the **Freefishers**.

They are cousins to the Stormlanders but have developed an intensely maritime and independent culture. Fishing, sailing, trading, smuggling, and occasional reaving connect their scattered islands. Their boats can carry salt one week, fugitives the next, and something nobody wishes to discuss the week after.

The islands lie beyond the easiest reach of Vorghol authority, giving the Freefishers choices denied to many mainland Tael Neydrans.

They are not inherently crusaders or romantic rebels. They have aided resistance networks, traded pragmatically with intermediaries of the Shrouded realm, dealt with foreigners, and ignored mainland politics when that best protected their communities.

What they consistently oppose is other people deciding what may be done with Freefisher boats.

## Culture Is Not Blood

These names are useful, but none should become a cage.

A Highlander can become a merchant. A Maritimer can live a lifetime inland. A Roadborn child may settle permanently in a town. A Lowlander raised among Northerlings may understand the open country better than someone whose ancestors have wandered it for generations.

People migrate.

They marry.

Wars displace them. Trade enriches them. Famine drives them away. Service carries them into foreign realms. Children grow up speaking differently from their grandparents.

This is why Rhone identity has so many layers.

A person may be **Rhone**, **Highlander**, **Rhessian**, a subject of a particular king, a member of a particular household, and a devotee of a particular Power simultaneously.

None of these identities cancels the others.

## Kin, House and Belonging

If anything runs through the varied Rhone cultures, it is the importance of **belonging**.

A person exists within webs of kin, household, village, guild, sworn fellowship, lordship, temple, regiment, ship, caravan, or realm. Precisely which matters most varies enormously.

Blood alone does not determine belonging.

Fostering has ancient roots among the Rhone. A child raised in another household may acquire obligations nearly as strong as those of birth. Adoption, sworn fellowship, marriage, apprenticeship, military service, and years of shared labor can create bonds treated with profound seriousness.

Among nobles, lineage carries political weight because inheritance, title, land, and obligation pass through families.

Yet even there, ancestry is not enough.

A king without followers is merely a person wearing a crown.

## Oaths and Reputation

Throughout Rhone cultures the spoken promise carries great weight.

In societies where authority is often personal, travel slow, literacy uneven, and institutions distant, reputation is a kind of currency. People must know whose word can be trusted.

An oath therefore places the speaker's name behind the promise.

Breaking faith can stain a household or lineage. Keeping faith can establish a reputation remembered for generations.

This is one reason old grudges endure.

Memory is social.

People remember who stood with whom, who abandoned a neighbor, whose grandfather changed sides, and which lord opened the granaries during a famine.

A deed does not necessarily end because its doer dies.

## Guest-Right

Hospitality is among the oldest customs shared widely across Rhone societies, although its precise laws vary.

Accepting someone beneath one's roof establishes obligations upon host and guest. Food and shelter create a temporary peace. The host owes protection; the guest owes restraint and respect.

To violate that peace is more than discourtesy.

Guest-right predates the great kingdoms. A traveler once depended upon strangers for fire and shelter, and everyone understood that next winter the stranger at the door might be oneself.

Kings have laws.

Guest-right is older.

## Crown, Law and Custom

Modern Rhone civilization contains kingdoms, cities, baronies, chartered towns, guilds, temple holdings, villages, clan districts, island communities, wandering peoples, and territories whose political arrangements resist tidy description.

Royal authority is not experienced equally everywhere.

A city merchant may deal daily with written contracts, guild rules, toll schedules, magistrates, and royal officers. A Highland shepherd may know the king chiefly from coins, soldiers, and an occasional tax collector. A Northerling may cross borders without noticing that a southern map claims the land belongs to somebody.

Rhone life therefore rests upon overlapping authorities: crown law, local custom, household obligation, guild privilege, religious duty, inherited right, and precedent.

Contradiction is normal.

The Rhone have spent centuries arguing about who owes what to whom.

They show no sign of stopping.

## Faith

There is no single Rhone religion.

The **Way of Sun and Stars**, now commonly called the **Old Faith**, reaches deep into Rhone history and was the faith of Brannais. It remains particularly strong in communities that retained older ways.

The **Triadic Faith** has profoundly shaped many settled Rhone realms, especially their institutions, temples, laws, charities, and ideas of kingship.

Neither tradition has erased the other Powers.

Local observances persist. Old shrines survive. A person may honor one Power for one purpose and another at a different moment.

Death provides perhaps the clearest example. Throughout most Rhone lands, the **Grey Priests of Korda the Gatherer** tend the dead. Korda is not evil. Everyone owes a death, and the Gatherer's duty is to ensure that the dead make their proper journey to the Far Fields.

For most Rhone, faith is not simply an assertion about what exists.

It is something done at birth, marriage, harvest, oath, burial, festival, war, and death.

## Language

The widespread Rhone tongue is **Rhoneen**, but “common language” should not be mistaken for uniform speech. Centuries of migration and separation have produced dialects, accents, specialized vocabularies, and regional expressions. The language has borrowed freely from older tongues.

A Maritimer's Rhoneen is filled with the sea. A Northerling carries words belonging to herd and open country. A Highland valley may preserve expressions forgotten everywhere else.

Language itself records migration.

A traveler may cross a political frontier and hear almost no difference in speech, then enter another valley within the same realm and struggle to understand the locals.

## Ordinary Rhone

Kings, knights, priests, and warriors occupy much of written history because chroniclers write about them.

They are not most Rhone.

Most lives concern work: planting, harvesting, tending animals, fishing, weaving, brewing, cutting timber, mining, carrying goods, repairing roofs, raising children, bargaining, sailing, keeping accounts, making tools, and performing the thousand ordinary tasks without which no kingdom survives.

A city contains servants, cooks, porters, apprentices, scribes, chandlers, washerfolk, beggars, thieves, craftspeople, laborers, merchants, boatmen, entertainers, priests, guards, and others whose names will never enter a royal chronicle.

A remote village may care very little about the dispute consuming a royal court two hundred miles away.

Until the king calls the banners.

Then history arrives at the door.

## War

There is no universal Rhone way of war.

The shield-walls of the Warg Years belong to one period and tradition. Modern hosts may contain noble cavalry, household warriors, levies, mercenaries, archers, engineers, sailors, scouts, and specialists according to the resources and customs of their realm.

Geography shapes warfare as strongly as culture.

River peoples fight around boats, bridges, and crossings. Maritime peoples require fleets. Highlanders know passes and broken ground. Northerlings understand movement across open country. Fortified Lowland realms can support forms of warfare impossible for a wandering population.

Yet war remains personal.

Lords are expected to be seen. Banners matter. Reputation matters. Soldiers must decide whether to follow when someone advances.

And armies cannot march without ordinary people.

Someone must grow the grain, mend the harness, haul the wagons, repair the boats, bury the dead, and somehow bring in the harvest after half the village has gone to war.

## The Other Kindreds

The Rhone live beside peoples whose histories began long before their present kingdoms existed.

Their attitudes toward those peoples are as varied as the Rhone themselves.

A merchant who has traded with Vulkah for thirty years may understand them better than a noble who knows them only from stories. A village may have generations of dealings with nearby Gholibin Hearths while a distant townsman believes ridiculous tales about them. Tobon Stayfolk may have been neighbors for generations, while Wanderfolk are familiar along roads and markets.

The Seylandri pose a particular challenge to Rhone ideas of history. They include people capable of remembering what Rhone know only through chronicles and lays.

The Uragh have been enemies, allies, trading partners, neighbors, raiders, and friends at different times and places.

There is no single Rhone opinion of any other Kindred.

There are millions of Rhone opinions.

## Heirs of the World

The Rhone sometimes describe themselves as heirs to the Sigil Lands.

There is truth in the claim, provided one remembers what inheritance means.

They did not create the world they inherited. Beneath their roads lie older roads. Their kingdoms stand among ruins whose builders understood things now forgotten. Their oldest songs preserve fragments of events they scarcely comprehend. The consequences of the Great Wrath still walk beneath the Shroud.

Yet the Rhone possess a remarkable capacity to begin again.

Their kingdoms are young by the measure of Seylandri memory. Dynasties rise and vanish. Borders move. Faiths change. Languages wander. Rhone quarrel incessantly and frequently destroy what their grandparents struggled to create.

Then they build again.

That restless impermanence may be the most Rhone quality of all.

## Rhone in the Age of the Comet

The Age of the Comet has confronted the Rhone with one of the oldest debts in their history.

The Vorghol were first made from their distant ancestors during the Great Wrath, transformed by the Dragha into nocturnal hunters capable of pursuing and killing Seylandri.

Thousands of years later, those ancient weapons still prey upon the descendants of the people from whom they were fashioned.

Tal Neydra has fallen beneath them.

Three Crusades have attempted to answer that catastrophe. The latest struggle has drawn warriors and allies from across the Sigil Lands and has become larger than any one Rhone realm or culture.

Lowlanders and Highlanders, Riverborn and Northerlings, Stormlanders and Maritimers may have little reason to imagine themselves one people in ordinary life.

The Shroud gives them one.

For centuries the Rhone have inherited the world piecemeal.

The Age of the Comet may determine what they do with the inheritance.
