= The Tobon =

The '''Tobon''' are a small and widely traveled Kindred found throughout much of the Sigil Lands. They are a people of households and wagons, villages and roads, gardens and marketplaces, family stories and far journeys.

Outsiders commonly divide them into two groups: the settled '''Stayfolk''' and the traveling '''Wanderfolk'''.

The Tobon do so themselves.

They simply disagree about what the distinction means.

Stayfolk build houses, cultivate fields and gardens, keep shops, raise livestock, and establish communities which may endure for generations. Wanderfolk travel in family companies and caravans, carrying goods, news, skills, songs, stories, and people along roads that some families have followed for centuries.

Neither is a separate Kindred.

Neither represents an older or purer form of Tobon life.

A Stayfolk family may have Wanderfolk cousins who arrive every few years with news from half the Sigil Lands. A Wanderfolk child may decide to remain in a town where her grandparents once stopped for a season. A settled household may take to the road after a marriage, quarrel, failed harvest, inheritance, opportunity, or simple desire to see what lies beyond the next hill.

The distinction matters.

The boundary does not always hold.

== A People of the Road and Hearth ==

Tobon are shorter than Rhone, generally standing somewhere around the height of a Rhone child approaching adolescence, though their proportions are those of adults. They are sturdy rather than delicate, with considerable variation in complexion, hair, features, and dress.

Their small stature has shaped aspects of Tobon material culture without defining it.

Stayfolk houses are naturally built to Tobon proportions. Wanderfolk wagons make remarkably efficient use of limited space. Furniture, tools, harness, storage, and domestic spaces are made for people who do not require Rhone dimensions.

In mixed settlements, accommodations can become more complicated.

A Tobon inn built for Tobon guests may be uncomfortable for a Rhone traveler. A Rhone tavern counter can reach an inconvenient height. Markets frequented by several Kindreds often solve the problem with steps, platforms, low counters, and the accumulated improvisations of generations.

The Tobon themselves generally regard such difficulties as ordinary facts of life rather than profound cultural questions.

== Stayfolk ==

'''Stayfolk''' are Tobon who have made a lasting home in one place.

Their communities range from scattered farmsteads and roadside hamlets to neighborhoods within larger Rhone towns and cities. Some settlements are overwhelmingly Tobon. Others consist of only a handful of extended families living among their taller neighbors.

Stayfolk are farmers, gardeners, herders, millers, brewers, innkeepers, craftspeople, merchants, laborers, healers, cooks, scribes, carters, and anything else their circumstances require.

The hearth matters deeply in Stayfolk life, but not because Stayfolk are timid homebodies.

A hearth represents continuity.

Someone planted these trees. Someone dug the well. Someone laid the first stones of the house. Someone knows which field floods after three days of rain and which neighbor can be trusted to help deliver a calf at midnight.

A family that remains in one place for generations accumulates knowledge of that place.

Stayfolk pride themselves upon such knowledge.

Wanderfolk sometimes call it knowing everything about nowhere.

Stayfolk have several answers to this.

Most are impolite.

== Wanderfolk ==

'''Wanderfolk''' are Tobon whose households travel.

The wagon is the image most outsiders associate with them, and not without reason. A well-kept Wanderfolk wagon is transportation, shelter, workshop, storehouse, inheritance, and home.

Some are brightly painted or elaborately carved. Others are plain and practical. Families modify them constantly. Compartments appear in improbable places. Folding tables become beds. Tools hang wherever a hand can find them in darkness. Children learn which boards creak and which cupboard contains the food they have been specifically instructed not to touch.

A single family may travel alone, but several households commonly join together for portions of a journey. Larger companies form and dissolve according to destination, trade, kinship, safety, season, and inclination.

Wanderfolk may work as traders, drovers, tinkers, healers, performers, craftspeople, messengers, guides, animal handlers, cooks, repairers, peddlers, and seasonal laborers. Many households combine several occupations.

They carry more than goods.

A Wanderfolk company arriving in a remote community brings news from other roads: marriages, deaths, wars, prices, scandals, harvests, opportunities, dangerous crossings, new tolls, vanished bridges, generous inns, dishonest merchants, and the whereabouts of distant relatives.

In places where written messages travel slowly, a familiar Wanderfolk family may be a community's most dependable connection to the wider world.

== The Long Roads ==

The Tobon are relative newcomers to the Sigil Lands when measured against the ancient histories of the Seylandri, Gholibin, and Vulkah.

They were not present during the [[Sigil:Great Wrath|Great Wrath]].

They had not yet arrived when [[Sigil:Brannais|Brannais]] fought the wars remembered in the old lays. There were no Tobon among his original Companions, despite several later songs which have attempted to put them there.

Their arrival belongs to a later age.

Over time Tobon families spread along the roads and river crossings of the Sigil Lands. Some continued traveling. Others stopped.

A good campsite became a seasonal stopping place. A seasonal stopping place acquired sheds and gardens. Someone built a permanent house. A cousin opened an inn. Another family settled nearby.

A generation later there was a Tobon village where once there had been only a bend in the road.

The opposite happened as well.

Settled families packed their belongings into wagons and departed places their ancestors had inhabited for generations.

Tobon history is therefore difficult to draw upon a political map.

Their communities have rarely corresponded neatly with kingdoms.

Roads are more useful.

== Kin and Household ==

Family lies near the center of Tobon social life, but Tobon ideas of family are expansive.

Households may contain several generations, unmarried relatives, fosterlings, adopted children, old friends, apprentices, widowed cousins, and others whose exact relationship requires a story longer than the listener expected.

Kinship establishes obligations.

It does not eliminate quarrels.

Tobon families can sustain disagreements with extraordinary endurance. A dispute over a marriage, inheritance, wagon, field boundary, unpaid debt, insult, or recipe can pass through several generations while everyone involved continues visiting one another regularly.

The existence of a quarrel does not necessarily mean a relationship has ended.

Sometimes it means precisely the opposite.

A person with whom one has no relationship is rarely worth arguing with for forty years.

== Hospitality ==

Hospitality is important throughout Tobon society.

Its form differs according to circumstance.

Among Stayfolk, hospitality centers naturally upon the household. Food is brought out. Space is found. News is exchanged. A traveler who has been welcomed beneath a roof enters, temporarily, into the web of obligations surrounding that household.

Among Wanderfolk, the same principle travels.

A place beside a fire can become a guest-place as surely as a chair beside a hearth. Wagons may be drawn into a protective arrangement at night, meals shared between households, and visitors accommodated with a degree of ingenuity that astonishes those who have seen the available space.

Hospitality is not limitless.

A guest has obligations as well.

Someone who steals from hosts, abuses their generosity, threatens children, mistreats animals, or deliberately brings danger upon a household may discover that Tobon memory for such behavior travels much farther than expected.

Roads carry reputations.

== Stayfolk and Wanderfolk ==

Relations between Stayfolk and Wanderfolk are affectionate, necessary, argumentative, and occasionally bitter.

Each can accuse the other of misunderstanding what Tobon life ought to be.

Stayfolk may regard Wanderfolk cousins as unreliable: forever arriving unexpectedly, disrupting routines, borrowing things, telling children exciting stories, and disappearing before the roof needs repairing.

Wanderfolk may regard Stayfolk as people who have somehow mistaken possessing a house for possessing good judgment.

These disagreements can become serious.

Land, inheritance, marriage, obligation, and differing ideas about responsibility can divide families. A Wanderfolk household may believe settled relatives have forgotten obligations to traveling kin. Stayfolk may resent relatives who expect hospitality without sharing the burdens of maintaining the home that provides it.

Neither side is entirely wrong.

Neither side is entirely right.

More importantly, the argument takes place within Tobon society.

Stayfolk and Wanderfolk marry one another. Children move between them. Travelers winter with settled relatives. Stayfolk join caravans. Wanderfolk eventually stop traveling.

The road and hearth are not opposing civilizations.

They are two answers to the same question:

Where is home?

== Wagons ==

Among Wanderfolk, few possessions carry more practical and emotional importance than a good wagon.

Wagons vary enormously.

Some are small and light enough for difficult roads. Others are substantial homes on wheels. Some carry trade goods. Some are workshops. Some belong to performers, healers, or craftspeople whose occupations determine much of their interior arrangement.

They are maintained carefully because failure far from settlement can be dangerous.

Repairs therefore accumulate.

A wheel may have been made in Rhess, an axle replaced in Angharais, a cabinet added by a grandfather in Sarrivel, and a painted panel received as a wedding gift somewhere no living member of the household has visited since.

Old wagons become family histories in wood, iron, leather, cloth, and paint.

When one can no longer travel, pieces are often retained.

A door may become part of a house.

A carved panel may hang above a hearth.

The journey does not necessarily end when the wheels stop turning.

== Animals ==

Animals occupy a large place in Tobon life.

Stayfolk keep the livestock appropriate to their country: goats, pigs, poultry, sheep, cattle, dogs, and whatever else local conditions support. Wanderfolk favor animals capable of enduring road life and pulling or carrying what the household cannot.

Tobon tend to know their animals individually.

This does not mean they sentimentalize them. A pig remains a pig, and may eventually become supper.

But an animal upon which a household depends is valuable, and competence in handling animals is respected.

Dogs are particularly common companions. They guard wagons, livestock, children, camps, and homes, while also performing the indispensable task of noticing things before anyone else does.

== Work and Trade ==

Tobon are often associated with trade because Wanderfolk are so visible upon the roads.

This can obscure how broad Tobon occupations actually are.

Stayfolk work the land, maintain workshops, keep inns, operate mills, trade in markets, and practice local crafts. Wanderfolk adapt their work to mobility, carrying skills and goods between communities that might otherwise have little contact.

A successful Tobon trader depends less upon exotic merchandise than upon knowing what is needed where.

Needles are unremarkable until a village has none.

A cooking pot is ordinary until the old one cracks.

A packet of letters may be worth nothing in coin and everything to the people awaiting them.

The road rewards attention.

Tobon traders therefore cultivate relationships as carefully as inventories.

A merchant who cheats every customer may become rich at one fair.

A merchant whose grandchildren expect to trade with the grandchildren of those customers behaves differently.

== Stories and Songs ==

Tobon storytelling is rich, social, and frequently competitive.

Stories are told at hearths, beside wagons, in inns, during work, at weddings, on long stretches of road, and anywhere else several people have gathered with sufficient time to disagree about what actually happened.

The same tale may exist in dozens of versions.

This is not necessarily considered a problem.

Who told the story, where it was told, and why it was being told can matter as much as strict historical accuracy.

Wanderfolk carry stories between distant communities. Stayfolk preserve local tales that traveling relatives may hear only once every generation. The exchange between the two keeps Tobon tradition simultaneously rooted and mobile.

Songs travel even more easily.

A tune learned beside a fire in Calael may appear years later in Rhess with different words and a new verse mocking someone who has never been within five hundred miles of Calael.

This is considered normal.

== Law and Obligation ==

Tobon live under the laws of the lands through which they travel or in which they settle, but they also maintain strong customs concerning kinship, debt, hospitality, property, marriage, inheritance, and obligation.

The two do not always agree.

Stayfolk communities often develop durable arrangements with local authorities. Their obligations are known, their land recognized, and disputes can be handled through institutions familiar to everyone involved.

Wanderfolk life is more complicated.

A caravan may cross several jurisdictions in a season. Tolls change. Local laws differ. Officials disagree about rights granted by their predecessors. A practice perfectly ordinary on one side of a river may be prohibited on the other.

This has made Wanderfolk particularly attentive to agreements, witnesses, favors, and reputation.

They remember where they were treated fairly.

They also remember where they were not.

== Faith ==

Tobon practice the faiths found throughout the Sigil Lands, shaped by local tradition, family custom, and the circumstances of their lives.

Stayfolk may participate deeply in the religious life of the communities where they have lived for generations. Wanderfolk carry observances with them, adapting ritual to camps, roadside shrines, borrowed halls, and open sky.

No single religious tradition defines the Kindred.

What often matters more is continuity: remembering the observances of parents and grandparents, keeping promises made at births and marriages, honoring the dead, and maintaining the small rituals by which a household understands itself.

A prayer spoken beside a wagon wheel is not necessarily less sincere than one spoken beneath a temple roof.

== War and Danger ==

Tobon are not a warlike Kindred.

This should not be mistaken for helplessness.

Stayfolk defend homes, fields, families, and neighbors when circumstances require it. Wanderfolk traveling dangerous roads understand the value of watches, dogs, scouts, defensible camps, and knowing when a road ahead feels wrong.

Most Tobon would rather avoid a fight than win one.

Avoiding unnecessary violence is generally considered good sense.

When violence cannot be avoided, however, small stature does not prevent someone from using a spear, bow, sling, knife, or sword effectively.

Tobon have lived among larger peoples for generations.

They are aware of the difference in reach.

== The Other Kindreds ==

The Tobon arrived in a land already ancient.

The '''Rhone''' are the people among whom most Tobon live and travel, and relations between them range from intimate friendship and shared communities to suspicion and prejudice. In many places the two peoples have lived beside one another for generations.

The '''Vulkah''' are valued trading partners whose goods travel far beyond the Deep, often through hands that know the roads well.

The '''Uragh''' inhabit lands where mobility is understood very differently. Wanderfolk and Uragh may both spend much of their lives moving, but the resemblance can be misleading; wagon roads and the open plains produce very different societies.

The '''Gholibin''' share with the Tobon a tendency to be underestimated by taller peoples. Beyond that, their histories and ways of life are profoundly different.

The '''Seylandri''' are encountered rarely. To a people accustomed to carrying stories from grandparents and great-grandparents, meeting someone who personally remembers events from centuries ago can be deeply unsettling.

Tobon respond to this, as to most things, in different ways.

Some become reverent.

Some become curious.

Some ask far too many questions.

== Tobon in the Age of the Comet ==

The [[Sigil:Age of the Comet|Age of the Comet]] has made the roads uncertain.

Wars interrupt trade. Old dangers have returned. Refugees move between realms. Rumors outrun armies. A road safe last year may be dangerous this year, while an obscure track remembered by one Wanderfolk grandmother may suddenly become the best route around disaster.

For the Tobon, these are not distant political developments.

Roads connect everything.

A burned village means relatives seeking shelter somewhere else. A closed frontier breaks a trade route. A new war leaves families divided across borders that did not matter when their last letters were sent.

Stayfolk provide places where people can stop.

Wanderfolk carry news between them.

Neither hearth nor road is sufficient alone.

Perhaps that is why the old argument between Stayfolk and Wanderfolk has never been settled.

The Tobon need both.
