= The Vulkah =

The '''Vulkah''' are an ancient Kindred of the deep places.

Their fortress-cities lie beneath mountains and within the bones of the earth, places of black basalt, descending galleries, bridges over chasms, workshops, halls, storehouses, markets, and roads whose beginnings have been forgotten even by those who still travel them.

They call their homeland '''[[Sigil:Vulk|Vulk]]'''.

To outsiders, the Vulkah are most famous for what they make. Their metalwork travels throughout the Sigil Lands. Their stonecutters and engineers have left works far beyond Vulk itself. A maker's mark upon an old blade, fitting, lock, or piece of masonry can sometimes identify a Vulkah workshop that vanished centuries ago.

This reputation is deserved.

It is also incomplete.

The Vulkah are not simply miners and smiths living beneath mountains. They are merchants, soldiers, masons, growers, engineers, cooks, porters, scholars, parents, traders, musicians, laborers, administrators, storytellers, and keepers of traditions older than most Rhone nations.

They are a people who have learned to live where the sun does not shine.

That has shaped nearly everything about them.

== The People of the Deep ==

Vulkah are shorter than most Rhone, but they are not diminutive.

They are compactly built, commonly broad through the torso and powerful in the limbs. A particularly tall Vulkah might stand around five feet seven inches, while most are noticeably shorter. Beside a Rhone they look less like smaller versions of the same people than people built to different proportions.

Their complexions tend toward darker shades, though considerable variation exists between individuals and families.

Their eyes are particularly distinctive.

Vulkah have lived in low light for so long that their eyes are adapted to conditions in which many surface peoples struggle to see. Large irises, heavy lids, and features suited to shielding the eye from sudden brightness are common. Strong daylight can be uncomfortable, and Vulkah traveling upon the surface often favor shaded hoods, broad coverings, or other means of reducing glare.

Their eyes do not glow.

Stories claiming otherwise are generally told by Rhone who encountered a Vulkah in poor light and frightened themselves.

Hair and beard customs vary by Sept, family, occupation, fashion, and individual preference. Some Vulkah wear elaborate hair, braids, ornaments, or carefully dressed beards. Others crop their hair short or shave portions of it entirely.

There is no universal Vulkah beard.

== Vulk ==

The homeland of the Vulkah is '''Vulk''', a realm of fortress-cities beneath and among the mountains.

These cities are not merely caves enlarged until people can live within them.

They are constructed landscapes.

Basalt walls rise through enormous chambers. Galleries descend from level to level. Bridges cross natural fissures and engineered voids. Shafts carry air between depths. Water is collected, directed, stored, and put to work. Roads pass through the mountains rather than over them.

The Vulkah understand stone not as an inert material but as something possessing structure.

Stone bears weight.

Stone fractures.

Stone carries vibration.

Stone channels water.

Stone remembers pressure.

A builder who ignores these things does not merely make an ugly building.

He may kill everyone inside it.

Engineering therefore carries enormous practical and cultural importance. A Vulkah structure is expected to endure, but endurance comes from understanding forces rather than simply making everything massive.

Some Vulkah works have survived for thousands of years.

Others have collapsed.

The Vulkah remember those too.

== The Septs ==

Vulkah society is organized around '''Septs'''.

A Sept is an enduring community of kinship, obligation, memory, property, craft, and shared history. It is larger and more complicated than a household and should not be mistaken for a simple Rhone clan.

A Vulkah belongs to a Sept before belonging to most larger political abstractions.

The Sept remembers births, marriages, debts, achievements, failures, agreements, grievances, property, obligations, and the work of previous generations. Its reputation is built over time and can be damaged by the actions of those who bear its name.

This does not mean every member practices the same occupation.

A Sept may contain soldiers, merchants, engineers, craftspeople, laborers, scholars, traders, cooks, administrators, and people whose work has nothing obvious to do with whatever originally made the Sept prominent.

Old associations nevertheless endure.

A Sept known for bridge-building may still take pride in bridges long after most of its members have entered other trades.

The past does not dictate Vulkah life.

It is rarely permitted to disappear from it.

== The Septhall ==

The '''Septhall''' is one of the central institutions of Vulkah communal life.

It is gathering place, council chamber, place of judgment, archive, ceremonial hall, and social center. Important agreements may be witnessed there. Disputes are heard. Guests received. Records preserved. Matters affecting the Sept debated.

Some Septhalls are modest.

Others have been enlarged repeatedly over centuries until the history of the community can almost be read in their architecture.

The Vulkah enjoy argument.

This should not be confused with disorder.

A vigorous disagreement can demonstrate that everyone involved considers the matter important enough to contest. Silence is not necessarily agreement, and politeness is not necessarily respect.

A Vulkah may argue fiercely against another's proposal and then share a meal with her afterward without either considering this contradictory.

The point of an argument is supposed to be determining what should be done.

Personal animosity is optional.

== Makers and Marks ==

Vulkah workmanship is famous throughout the Sigil Lands.

A maker commonly marks significant work.

The mark may identify an individual, workshop, Sept, place, or some combination of these. On important objects, several marks may record different stages of manufacture or later repair.

To outsiders these can appear decorative.

To another Vulkah they may constitute a history.

Who made this?

Where?

For whom?

Who repaired it?

Was the maker entitled to use this mark?

Does the workmanship deserve the reputation attached to the name?

Such questions matter because craftsmanship is not anonymous.

A badly made object can outlive its maker.

So can a good one.

Vulkah makers therefore live with the uncomfortable possibility that someone centuries hence may examine their work and form an opinion of them.

This is considered healthy.

== Work ==

Outsiders associate the Vulkah with mining because much of the metal and stone exported from Vulk originates beneath the mountains.

Most Vulkah are not miners.

A fortress-city requires food, water, sanitation, transport, storage, administration, clothing, medicine, education, maintenance, trade, law, defense, and entertainment. Someone must haul goods between levels, inspect supports, repair drains, prepare meals, teach children, keep records, tend animals, negotiate contracts, settle arguments, and clean the Septhall after everyone has finished arguing.

Vulkah agriculture likewise reflects their environment. Surface holdings, sheltered valleys, underground cultivation, stored foods, livestock, trade, and careful management of water all contribute to feeding populations that cannot live upon mushrooms and stubbornness.

No Vulkah city is truly self-sufficient.

This is one reason trade matters so much.

== Trade and the Surface ==

Vulkah have traded with surface peoples for ages.

Metals, worked stone, tools, weapons, fittings, jewelry, and manufactured goods travel outward from Vulk. Grain, timber, cloth, livestock, oils, dyes, foodstuffs, and countless other commodities travel inward.

The roads connecting Vulk with the surface are therefore lifelines as much as trade routes.

Vulkah merchants can be found far beyond their homeland. Some establish permanent houses in surface cities. Others travel between established partners whose families have dealt with the same Sept for generations.

A long commercial relationship has value beyond the immediate price of a transaction.

A stranger may offer more.

A known partner may still be there forty years from now.

The Vulkah understand the difference.

== Memory in Stone ==

The Vulkah possess writing, records, monuments, marks, and archives, but their relationship with memory extends beyond keeping information.

To remember something is to acknowledge that it happened.

Names may be carved into stone because stone endures longer than flesh. Agreements recorded upon durable surfaces carry a seriousness that spoken promises may not. Buildings preserve the decisions of their makers. Repairs reveal later generations answering those decisions.

Even mistakes can be deliberately preserved.

A failed support, badly conceived passage, or disastrous engineering decision may be documented rather than concealed so that another generation does not repeat it.

This gives Vulkah cities a peculiar relationship with their own past.

The old is everywhere.

It is built into walls.

== The Deep ==

The '''Deep''' is more than the physical world beneath the surface.

It occupies an important place in Vulkah thought.

The world below is darkness, foundation, danger, shelter, origin, and final destination. It contains the stone upon which cities stand and the chasms into which no living Vulkah has descended. It provides wealth and takes lives. It preserves things forgotten above and destroys the careless without malice.

Vulkah spirituality is consequently filled with ideas of memory, endurance, fire, stone, depth, and return.

The Deep is not a Power.

Nor do the Vulkah imagine the earth as a benevolent parent waiting to protect them.

Stone falls upon the devout as readily as anyone else.

Reverence does not eliminate gravity.

== The Dead ==

Vulkah funerary customs are among the practices outsiders find most unsettling.

The dead are returned to the Deep.

In the oldest cities, particular chasms and descents have received the dead for generations beyond counting. Funerary places are treated with seriousness and are separated from ordinary shafts, mines, roads, and workings.

The body goes downward.

The name remains.

Names of the dead may be preserved in stone, record, family memory, objects, and the history of the Sept. A Vulkah need not believe the physical body must remain intact in order for the dead to be remembered.

The distinction is important.

Stone keeps the name.

The Deep takes the rest.

== Fire ==

Fire occupies an ambiguous place in Vulkah life.

Without it, the deep cities would be colder, darker, and poorer. Fire cooks food, works metal, provides light, heats chambers, and makes many crafts possible.

It is also exceptionally dangerous underground.

Smoke kills.

Heat travels.

A fire in the wrong gallery can consume air needed by people who never see the flames.

Vulkah therefore treat fire with a mixture of familiarity and respect. Hearths, furnaces, lamps, vents, and workshops are governed by practices accumulated through generations of experience.

A careless fire is not merely a private mistake.

It threatens neighbors.

The Vulkah have strong opinions about people who threaten neighbors.

== Music in the Deep ==

Vulkah music is shaped by enclosed space.

Drums, strings, horns, voices, and percussion interact with chambers whose acoustics may have been understood long before the current performers were born. Some halls are famous for the way they carry sound.

A song performed in such a place belongs partly to the chamber.

Echo is not silence returning.

It is sound meeting stone.

Music accompanies celebration, mourning, work, ceremony, marching, drinking, storytelling, and ordinary pleasure. Some pieces are written for particular halls and lose much of their character when performed elsewhere.

Surface listeners often describe Vulkah music as powerful.

Vulkah musicians have several less flattering terms for surface acoustics.

== War Below ==

Vulkah warfare reflects the places in which they expect to fight.

The stereotypical surface image of a Vulkah warrior carrying a great axe is largely nonsense.

Axes are useful tools.

They are poor weapons in a narrow passage where there may be insufficient room to swing one.

Vulkah soldiers favor '''spears, thrusting swords, short blades, crossbows, and compact shields'''. Armor is designed with confined movement in mind. Formations can block passages where only a few fighters can stand abreast.

A spear in a corridor is difficult to pass.

Several spears behind shields are worse.

Vulkah engineers also understand that underground warfare is rarely only about weapons. Gates, passages, gradients, ventilation, water, collapses, alternate routes, barriers, and prepared positions can determine a battle before opposing soldiers meet.

This does not mean Vulkah armies never fight upon the surface.

They do.

Their heavy infantry has earned a formidable reputation there as well.

But the military traditions of Vulk began beneath stone.

== The Zush ==

The curved '''Zush''' is among the characteristic Vulkah swords.

It is compact enough for confined spaces, suitable for close fighting, and appears in numerous regional and historical forms. Some are practical soldiers' weapons. Others are finely worked objects carrying maker's marks and histories extending across generations.

A famous Zush may be remembered almost as carefully as the people who carried it.

That does not make every sword magical.

Usually it means someone made an exceptionally good sword and generations of owners had the sense not to lose it.

== Ancient Survivors ==

The Vulkah remember a world older than Rhone civilization.

They remember the [[Sigil:Numberless Wars|Numberless Wars]].

They remember the age when Seylandri power spread across '''Tar Aerchel''' and the [[Sigil:Dragha|Dragha]] ruled their mountain domains.

When the [[Sigil:Great Wrath|Great Wrath]] consumed the world above, the Vulkah survived largely by closing their gates.

This was not cowardice.

There were powers abroad that could burn forests across horizons and break lands with Great Workings. The Vulkah understood that participating in the destruction would not improve it.

So the gates closed.

Trade diminished.

News became uncertain.

Refugees and travelers found old roads barred.

The world above burned.

Vulk endured.

The decision saved the Vulkah.

That does not mean every Vulkah has always been comfortable with its cost.

== The Warg Years ==

When Vulkah emerged again into broader contact with the surface, they found a changed world.

Tar Aerchel was gone.

The northern Wraeth had spread southward and become the ancestors of the many Rhone peoples. Old roads ended at ruins. Familiar names had disappeared. Hundreds of tiny realms rose and fell among people who knew little of the civilization that had once occupied the land beneath their feet.

Vulkah trade became one of the threads connecting this fragmented world.

Metal traveled.

Tools traveled.

Knowledge traveled.

So did Vulkah themselves.

Centuries later, the Vulkah maker '''Khurn Deep-Hand''' would design and conceal the tomb of [[Sigil:Brannais|King Brannais]] beneath [[Sigil:Skythane Mount|Skythane Mount]].

The Rhone remember Brannais.

The Vulkah remember Khurn.

Neither memory invalidates the other.

== The Other Kindreds ==

The Vulkah have known some of the other Kindreds for thousands of years and others for considerably less.

The '''Seylandri''' belonged to the elder world above. Their civilization achieved wonders the Vulkah respected and powers they had reason to fear. The destruction of Tar Aerchel remains one of the great warnings of history.

The '''Gholibin''' are older in the Sigil Lands than the Seylandri and possess memories of the Dragha and the elder world preserved in very different ways from Vulkah records.

The '''Rhone''' were once obscure northern peoples. The Vulkah have watched their descendants spread across the land, build kingdoms, lose them, build others, and become the dominant people of much of the modern Sigil Lands. Vulkah merchants have dealt with Rhone long enough that some commercial relationships are older than the realms in which they presently operate.

The '''Tobon''' are relative newcomers, but their Wanderfolk have become useful carriers of goods and information along surface roads.

The '''Uragh''' live beneath an enormous sky and upon open plains, conditions almost perfectly opposite to those that shaped Vulkah civilization. The difference has never prevented trade.

No Kindred is understood through one relationship alone.

The Vulkah have lived too long for that.

== The Vulkah in the Age of the Comet ==

The [[Sigil:Age of the Comet|Age of the Comet]] finds Vulk still standing.

This fact impresses the Vulkah less than it impresses outsiders.

Standing is what cities are supposed to do.

Yet the world beyond the gates is changing again. The [[Sigil:Shroud|Shroud]] remains. The Vorghol threaten lands with which Vulkah Septs have traded for generations. Old roads carry refugees and soldiers alongside merchants. Stories thought safely consigned to history have acquired uncomfortable relevance.

The Vulkah have survived previous catastrophes by knowing when to close their gates.

They have also prospered by knowing when to open them.

The difference between wisdom and fear is not always obvious while the decision is being made.

Some Vulkah look at the troubles of the surface and see another age of madness from which the Deep should withdraw.

Others look at thousands of years of roads, obligations, friendships, debts, trade, and shared history and ask whether the world above can still be dismissed as someone else's concern.

Stone endures.

The Vulkah know better than most that endurance alone is not the same thing as living.
