= The Uragh =

The '''Uragh''' are the great nomadic Kindred of [[Sigil:Kuragh Torrh|Kuragh Torrh]], the immense grasslands of the Sigil Lands. They are herders, hunters, traders, craftspeople, riders, singers, warriors, parents, healers, and travelers whose lives follow the rhythms of pasture, weather, water, and herd. Their camps may stand in one valley for weeks and vanish within a morning, leaving little behind beyond flattened grass, cold hearths, and the marks of many hooves.

To settled Rhone, this mobility has sometimes been mistaken for rootlessness. The Uragh know hundreds of miles of country intimately: where water remains during a dry summer, which valleys flood after spring rain, where winter winds are worst, which grasses fatten a herd, where an easy crossing becomes dangerous after rain, and which distant households can be expected to share a fire. Their homeland is not defined by walls or permanent settlements. It is a web of remembered places, seasonal routes, grazing grounds, waters, meeting places, graves, and obligations stretching across the plains.

== The People of the Plains ==

The Uragh are unmistakably nonhuman. They are large and powerfully built, with skin ranging from dark green through grey-green to shades approaching slate, and considerably less body hair than the Rhone. Their faces are rugged, with small noses and narrow slitted nostrils, while their eyes have a distinctly nonhuman appearance. To people unfamiliar with them, even a relaxed Uragh face can appear severe or intimidating.

The Uragh naturally possess their own standards of beauty. They admire faces, bodies, voices, expressions, adornments, and qualities that need not correspond to Rhone tastes; a handsome Uragh does not resemble a handsome Rhone painted green. Within their own households they smile, laugh, tease, flirt, sulk, grieve, embrace their children, quarrel with siblings, complain about relatives, and become as foolish around people they love as anyone else. The tendency of outsiders to imagine the Uragh as perpetually grim says considerably more about the outsiders than about the Uragh.

Their voices add to this impression of strangeness. Uragh speech extends into deep growls and resonances that Rhone throats cannot easily reproduce, and sounds which seem threatening to an unfamiliar listener may be perfectly ordinary conversation. Pitch, resonance, rhythm, and tone carry distinctions immediately apparent to another Uragh. This vocal range is one reason horses generally dislike them: Uragh scent, size, and especially their deep voices can alarm horses badly, even when the Uragh intends no harm.

== Kuragh Torr ==

'''[[Sigil:Kuragh Torr|Kuragh Torr]]''' is the great Uragh confederation of the plains, but it is not a kingdom and possesses no permanent capital. It is a network of peoples, families, herds, camps, leaders, alliances, customary rights, obligations, and remembered agreements. Its political geography changes as its people move, and authority depends far more upon relationships and recognition than upon the occupation of a fixed administrative center.

At great gatherings, thousands of Uragh may temporarily create something resembling a city upon the open grass. Yurts rise in ordered clusters while herds cover the surrounding country. Traders arrive from distant territories, disputes are heard, marriages negotiated, animals exchanged, competitions held, news carried from camp to camp, and old alliances renewed. Leaders who may not have seen one another since the previous gathering argue over common concerns and make arrangements for the seasons ahead. Then the gathering ends. Within days the city is gone, but its government has not disappeared. Its participants have simply carried it away with them.

Leadership among the Uragh is correspondingly personal and often situational. Someone respected in war may not be the person a community wants deciding grazing rights, while a gifted negotiator may have little authority over a hunt. An elder whose physical strength has faded may possess knowledge nobody else can replace. Some individuals acquire influence extending far beyond their immediate families, but such influence must be maintained through reputation, ability, generosity, relationships, and demonstrated judgment. People who can pack their homes and move are difficult to govern solely by commanding them to remain.

== Household and Family ==

The household is the enduring center of Uragh life. An Uragh yurt is not crude temporary shelter but a carefully designed portable home reflecting generations of experience with wind, cold, heat, rain, transport, ventilation, storage, and fire. Its interior may be richly appointed with woven hangings, furs and rugs, tools, bundles of herbs and spices, drying meats, cooking vessels, baskets, weapons, tack, clothing, charms, keepsakes, carved objects, and all the accumulated possessions of family life.

Everything must eventually move, but this encourages neither poverty nor austerity. It encourages judgment about what is worth carrying. Textiles may be extraordinarily elaborate, leather carefully tooled and dyed, and horn, bone, wood, hide, fiber, and traded metal shaped into objects both useful and beautiful. Jewelry, charms, braids, decorated tack, and patterned cloth allow families and individuals to display identity, affection, wealth, skill, and memory without constructing permanent monuments. A beautiful thing need not be nailed to the ground.

Households commonly include children, parents, elders, unmarried relatives, fosterlings, and others bound by kinship or obligation. Children grow up surrounded by adults performing useful work and learn largely by participating in it. A young child may begin by gathering fuel, carrying small objects, watching animals, or holding something while an increasingly impatient aunt repairs it; greater responsibilities follow as ability permits. Nomadic life provides little advantage in pretending to possess a skill one lacks. An Uragh who cannot perform a necessary task finds someone who can, because the alternative may mean losing livestock, ruining equipment, going hungry, or endangering the household.

Elders consequently retain importance long after physical strength begins to fade. Someone who remembers where a herd survived an exceptional winter, why an apparently excellent campsite has been avoided for thirty years, or what happened the last time a particular watercourse failed possesses knowledge with immediate practical value. The family is therefore not merely an economic arrangement or a chain of descent. It is a storehouse of experience carried from camp to camp.

== Herds and Torrak ==

The animal most closely associated with Uragh life is the '''[[Sigil:Torrak|Torrak]]''', a large plains antelope whose dangerous horns sweep distinctively backward from the head. The Uragh have herded Torrak for generations for meat, hides, milk, transport, and war, and they have developed riding animals tolerant of Uragh scent, voices, movement, and the deep vocalizations that frighten horses. A trained riding Torrak is valuable and requires considerable knowledge of the animal's temperament; Torrak are not docile creatures, and their horns provide a persuasive correction to anyone who treats them carelessly.

Foals are commonly raised close to the household, so Uragh children learn animal behavior early. Particular Torrak may become familiar and well-loved members of a family's daily life even though the herd also supplies food and material necessary for survival. The Uragh see no contradiction between affection for animals and dependence upon them. Herding requires intimate knowledge precisely because the animals matter so much.

Different households maintain different combinations of livestock according to country, season, wealth, tradition, and need. Herd management demands constant judgment. Too many animals can exhaust pasture; too few leave a household vulnerable. Water must be found, sick animals separated, breeding managed, predators watched, young protected, and grazing grounds allowed to recover. Movement therefore follows remembered patterns and present conditions rather than whim. The romantic notion that nomads simply wander wherever they please would strike most Uragh as an excellent way to become a dead nomad.

Horses occupy a peculiar place in Uragh relations with their Rhone neighbors because the Uragh do not ride them. Horses generally dislike Uragh scent and voices and can become difficult when approached by unfamiliar Uragh. This has generated centuries of jokes, of which the most widespread Rhone version claims that horses fear the Uragh because Uragh eat them. The usual Uragh response is that horses are correct. In practice, experienced Uragh travelers give unfamiliar horses space; frightening someone's valuable animal is a poor beginning to either trade or hospitality.

== Knowing the Grass ==

To outsiders, the plains can appear empty. To the Uragh they are crowded with information. Grass reveals soil, water, grazing, weather, fire, and the recent passage of animals. Tracks show movement. Birds may reveal water or carrion. Clouds announce conditions beyond the horizon, and wind carries weather and scent across country where there may be little else to obstruct it.

Families remember seasonal routes and alternatives, reliable springs, dangerous ground, disputed pastures, old graves, meeting places, sheltered winter country, and stretches best avoided at particular times of year. This knowledge is intensely practical and often extremely local. Maps can be useful, particularly when dealing with outsiders, but memory is easier to carry and can preserve distinctions no mapmaker thought worth recording.

The grasslands are therefore neither empty nor unclaimed simply because they lack walls. Different groups possess customary expectations concerning water, grazing, passage, and seasonal use, and these expectations can overlap in complicated ways. A valley empty in midsummer may be essential winter country. A spring used by one group this month may traditionally belong to another route later in the year. Understanding Kuragh Torr requires seeing occupation through time rather than assuming that land belongs only to whoever happens to be standing upon it today.

== Hospitality and Obligation ==

Hospitality is a serious matter among the Uragh because the plains can kill the isolated. A traveler may need water, food, warmth, shelter, information, assistance with an animal, or simply the security of sleeping near other people. Welcoming someone beside the fire therefore creates obligations on both sides. A guest is expected to respect the household, its people, animals, possessions, and customs; hosts accept responsibility for those they have welcomed.

The details differ among communities, but the principle is widespread. Someone accepted beneath a family's shelter is not casually harmed, while someone who steals from hosts, threatens children, abuses animals, or deliberately brings danger upon a household may discover that reputation travels efficiently across country with no postal service. Hospitality is generosity made practical, but it is also one of the institutions by which civilization functions where the nearest permanent wall may be days away.

Uragh law operates on similar principles. Kuragh Torr cannot rely upon a courthouse in every district because its people do not remain conveniently in districts. Custom, witnesses, kinship, reputation, negotiation, and remembered agreement therefore carry considerable weight. Disputes over livestock, grazing, water, marriage, injury, theft, debt, insult, or broken agreements may draw in elders, respected leaders, witnesses, relatives, and neutral parties. Settlements matter because today's opponent may be encountered again next season, and a feud that makes a water route unusable harms far more people than those who began it. The absence of a permanent courthouse does not mean the absence of law. Judgment travels because the society itself travels.

== Wealth, Work and Trade ==

Uragh wealth moves. Livestock is its most obvious form, but wealth may also consist of fine textiles, weapons, jewelry, tack, preserved food, tools, trade goods, obligations owed by others, and relationships maintained across the plains. A prosperous household may possess enormous herds without owning a single permanent building. This has historically confused settled tax collectors, a problem which the Uragh have rarely felt obligated to solve for them.

Prestige depends partly upon possession but also upon the ability to use wealth well. A successful person can sustain dependents, assist kin, honor obligations, host guests, contribute during hardship, and make generosity visible when circumstances call for it. A rich person who refuses every obligation remains rich, but the Uragh may not regard him as particularly admirable.

Mobility also demands a high degree of practical skill. Harness breaks, leather tears, clothing wears out, yurt frames need repair, blades dull, animals become sick, food spoils, and weather has no respect for incompetence. Uragh crafts therefore emphasize durability, repairability, portability, and efficient use of materials, while leaving ample room for elaborate decoration. A moving household is not technologically simple; in many respects it must be more self-reliant than a settled household that can summon a specialist from the next street.

Trade supplies what the plains cannot. The Uragh exchange livestock, hides, meat, animal products, herbs, crafted goods, and other resources for grain, metalwork, cloth, manufactured goods, luxuries, and materials unavailable locally. Seasonal markets may be older than nearby Rhone towns, and merchants of several Kindreds travel to major gatherings. Successful commerce depends heavily upon relationships. An outsider who keeps agreements, offers fair measure, learns local customs, and returns year after year can become a familiar figure across several communities. Someone who assumes nomads cannot count generally discovers otherwise before making the mistake twice.

== Food, Story and Ordinary Life ==

Uragh cooking reflects both pastoral life and centuries of trade. Meat, milk, fats, dried and preserved foods, gathered plants, herbs, roots, grains acquired from settled neighbors, and imported spices all find their way into Uragh kitchens. Preservation matters because food must survive movement and lean seasons, but necessity has never prevented people from caring about taste. Bundles of herbs and spices hang in many yurts, and recipes travel with families, changing whenever a new ingredient proves worth carrying.

Meals are social whenever circumstances permit, and the common pot beside the fire is one of the ordinary centers of household life. Here equipment is repaired, children play, gossip circulates, animals wander inconveniently close to supper, and stories are repeated to people who already know how they end. Uragh domestic life is not an intermission between migrations and battles. It is the reason most of the practical work of migration, herding, trade, and defense is undertaken in the first place.

Stories and songs preserve journeys, marriages, disasters, hunts, battles, agreements, remarkable animals, old grievances, family triumphs, and embarrassing incidents which someone unwisely hoped would be forgotten. Some belong to whole communities, while others are family possessions repeated around particular fires. Songs accompany work and travel as readily as ceremony, and new compositions enter circulation constantly. Oral tradition is not treated as a museum of ancient material. The present keeps happening and therefore keeps requiring new stories.

== Faith and the Saël ==

Uragh spirituality is closely bound to the world through which they move. Sky, grass, wind, animals, fire, water, death, birth, memory, and the unseen workings of the [[Sigil:Saël|Saël]] are encountered in ordinary life rather than confined to special buildings or formal occasions. Charms and small observances are common: objects may hang within a yurt, be attached to tack, carried upon the body, or left at meaningful places. Some commemorate ancestors, others mark promises or seek good fortune, and some belong to customs whose origins have been debated for longer than anyone can remember.

The Uragh recognize the Powers, but do not regard them as creators of the world. Their traditions belong broadly to what Rhone scholars call the '''Old Faith''', though this convenient label conceals many specifically Uragh practices and understandings. Their religion developed beneath an open sky and among people accustomed to carrying their homes with them; sacredness therefore does not require permanent architecture. A fire, a spring, an old grave, a particular hill, or a place where generations have gathered may possess significance without anyone ever having built a temple upon it.

== War ==

The Uragh possess a formidable martial reputation, but warfare is not the organizing purpose of their society. Life upon the plains already rewards awareness, endurance, mobility, coordination, and the ability to respond quickly to changing conditions. Hunting and herding teach skills useful in war without making every hunter or herder a warrior.

Torrak give Uragh fighters mobility without dependence upon horses. Mounted warriors can scout, raid, pursue, screen larger forces, and cross familiar country rapidly, while foot warriors remain important whenever terrain or circumstance makes riding impractical. Spears, bows, blades, and other practical weapons are common. Uragh commanders understand movement particularly well because the logistics of moving people, animals, food, shelter, and equipment across the plains are problems their society solves constantly even in peace.

For all their martial reputation, most Uragh would rather bring a herd safely through winter than acquire glory in battle. Livestock must still be tended after the songs have been sung, children must still be fed, and damaged homes must still be repaired. A dead hero cannot mend a yurt.

== The Other Kindreds ==

The Uragh have shared the Sigil Lands with other peoples for many generations, and no single relationship defines their view of another Kindred. The '''Rhone''' are their most numerous settled neighbors. Relations have included trade, alliance, friendship, military service, shared settlements, border disputes, raiding, prejudice, and war, often simultaneously in different places. Rhone chroniclers have sometimes treated Uragh politics as incomprehensible because they looked for kings, borders, and capitals; Uragh observers have occasionally returned the favor by finding Rhone attachment to lines on maps equally peculiar.

The '''Tobon''' understand mobility, though a Wanderfolk road and an Uragh seasonal route represent very different ways of moving through the world. Tobon merchants and travelers are nevertheless familiar visitors at many gatherings. The '''Vulkah''' come from a civilization almost opposite to Uragh experience—stone overhead instead of open sky, permanent fortress-cities instead of moving households—but the difference has never prevented useful trade. Encounters with the '''Seylandri''' are uncommon enough to remain noteworthy, while the '''Gholibin''' possess their own ancient relationships with land and movement which outsiders have often misunderstood for different reasons.

The Uragh are generally better served by judging individuals than by assuming Kindred determines character. They have met too many fools of every shape to believe foolishness belongs exclusively to anyone else.

== The Uragh in the Age of the Comet ==

The [[Sigil:Age of the Comet|Age of the Comet]] has brought new uncertainty to Kuragh Torr. Wars elsewhere alter trade routes and prices; refugees move across old paths; armies require animals, food, guides, allies, and passage. Distant rulers remember the Uragh whenever they require help and sometimes forget them again afterward. None of these developments remains distant for long, because consequences travel even when armies do not. A political decision made hundreds of miles away eventually reaches the plains as a missing caravan, an unexpected demand for livestock, displaced families, armed travelers, altered markets, or news carried beside a fire.

The Uragh continue to move, but movement should never be mistaken for indifference or flight. Their society was built around the recognition that conditions change. Grass dies and returns, watercourses fail, herds move, children become elders, alliances alter, and camps rise and disappear. Even familiar country is never exactly the same from one season to another.

To peoples who build walls and call the ground inside them permanent, Uragh life can appear uncertain. The Uragh might answer that certainty was never promised to anyone. They have simply built a civilization that does not require the world to stand still.
