The Makers
Before there were Powers, there were Makers. Before there were prayers, there was the world.

The Makers are the oldest mystery of the Sigil Lands.

They are said to have shaped the world, established its deepest laws, and brought forth the first conditions from which life, spirit, and thought could arise. Then, at some point beyond the reach of history, they ceased to exist as beings separate from creation.

The usual word is transcended.

What that word actually means, no one knows.

The Makers left no temples.

They established no priesthood.

No surviving scripture can confidently claim to contain their words.

No reliable tradition preserves their names.

No known Eidron speaks on their behalf.

No Power claims to be one of them.

They are not worshipped in the ordinary sense because there is no certainty that anything remains which could receive worship.

And yet everything remains because of them.

Before History
Almost nothing concerning the Makers can properly be called history.

They belong to an age before chronicles, kingdoms, peoples, and perhaps even before the world existed in a form mortals would recognize.

The oldest Seylandri traditions speak of creation as something shaped rather than commanded into existence. Vulkah fragments describe foundations laid beneath foundations. Rhone philosophers use the language of builders, smiths, potters, gardeners, and architects according to their school and temperament.

These are metaphors.

No one knows whether the Makers possessed bodies.

No one knows how many there were.

No one knows whether they were individuals in any mortal sense.

Even the term Makers is a mortal convenience.

It describes what they did.

It does not tell anyone what they were.

What the Makers Made
The Makers are credited not merely with fashioning mountains, seas, stars, and living things, but with establishing the deeper conditions that allow such things to exist.

Matter has form.

Distance has meaning.

Time proceeds.

Causes have consequences.

Life changes.

Memory persists.

Death ends.

The world possesses regularity because something gave it regularity.

The world also possesses the capacity for change, growth, choice, accident, adaptation, and wonder.

These too belong to the inheritance of the Makers.

The learned sometimes distinguish between the world's enduring structure and its living movement. Most philosophical schools call the first Maël, the Bones of the World, and the second Saël, the Breath of the World.

Whether the Makers themselves ever used either word, or even if they communicated with words, is unknowable.

The distinction is mortal scholarship imposed upon something vastly older.

The Breath of the World
The greatest surviving trace of the Makers is called the Saël, the Breath of the World.

Saël moves through living creation.

It is present in growth and change, memory and emotion, season and place. It gathers strangely in ancient forests, old battlefields, sacred places, lonely mountains, and lands marked by powerful events. Those sensitive to it describe currents, stillnesses, eddies, tides, and disturbances.

But Saël is not a person.

It possesses no throne.

It issues no commandments.

It does not become angry when ignored or pleased when praised.

It cannot meaningfully be flattered.

To call it a god is to mistake the wind for someone blowing upon one's face.

Yet neither is Saël merely an impersonal energy waiting to be harvested.

It responds.

It resists.

It possesses tendencies arising from the nature of the world itself.

Those who practice the Craft learn to move with those tendencies. Practitioners of the Art persuade the Breath into deliberate patterns. Through the Gift, the Powers align Saël with the profound principles they embody.

None truly commands it.

The Breath belongs to the world before it belongs to anyone.

Transcendence
Every serious account of the Makers eventually reaches the same abyss.

They departed.

Or changed.

Or became something else.

Theologians call this the Transcendence of the Makers, although the name gives an appearance of understanding that no one actually possesses.

Some traditions claim the Makers completed creation and passed beyond it.

Others say they became inseparable from what they had made.

Still others argue that these propositions may describe the same event viewed from opposite directions.

If a Maker ceased to be a separate being because it became something greater, has it departed?

If its work remains within every stone and living breath, is it absent?

If it can no longer be distinguished from the order it created, does it still exist?

There is no accepted answer.

The Powers have never supplied one.

That silence is itself one of the great theological mysteries.

The Powers Are Not the Makers
This point is among the few matters upon which the major learned traditions broadly agree.

The Powers did not create the world.

Ardis did not make compassion possible.

Inglorian did not invent justice.

Vannimar did not create knowledge.

Korda did not devise death.

Rather, the Powers are conscious expressions of profound principles already woven into creation.

The oldest teachings sometimes call them the Heirs of the Makers.

This does not mean inheritance in the mortal sense. The Makers left no crown to divide among divine children.

It means that after the Makers transcended, the Powers remained as great conscious presences within the order they had left behind.

Where the Makers shaped existence, the Powers embody meanings within existence.

That distinction is fundamental.

A Power is divine and may be unimaginably mighty.

It is still part of the world the Makers made.

Were the Powers Created?
Here certainty ends.

One tradition holds that the Makers deliberately brought forth the Powers as guardians of creation.

Another says that the Powers arose naturally from the Saël once thought, life, and moral choice entered the world.

Some Seylandri philosophers have suggested that a sufficiently profound principle inevitably acquires awareness within a living cosmos, and that asking who “created” the Powers therefore mistakes the nature of the question.

Triadic theologians have produced libraries on the subject.

None has settled it.

The Powers themselves do not appear especially concerned with the argument.

Why There Is No Cult of the Makers
There have been individuals who attempted to worship the Makers.

Such movements rarely last.

Worship normally presumes relationship: prayer and answer, offering and acceptance, devotion and presence.

The Makers provide none of these.

No confirmed miracle has ever been attributed directly to them.

No known priest receives the Gift from a Maker.

No revelation has established a Maker's wishes.

One cannot even confidently address one by name.

A person may contemplate the Makers.

A philosopher may study their legacy.

A poet may praise them.

A Crafter may marvel at the world they left behind.

But building a religion around them is rather like attempting to establish a personal relationship with creation itself.

For this reason, even traditions that speak reverently of the Makers generally do not kneel to them.

They kneel to no absence merely because it is ancient.

The Namelessness of the Makers
Many stories give names to the Makers.

None is regarded as reliable.

Whenever cultures encounter a mystery, they tend to populate it.

Old chronicles occasionally speak of a World-Smith, a First Mother, a Weaver Beyond Stars, twin architects, seven builders, nine voices, or a single intelligence broken into innumerable parts.

These traditions are valuable as expressions of the cultures that produced them.

They are not evidence.

Learned usage therefore leaves the Makers unnamed.

This is not because their true names are forbidden.

They are simply unknown.

Perhaps they never had names.

What the Different Faiths Say
The Makers occupy an unusual place in religion because almost every major tradition acknowledges them while few make them central to ordinary worship.

The Triadic Faith generally teaches that the Makers established creation and that the Powers preserve its moral possibilities. Triadic thinkers are particularly interested in the relationship between the Makers' order and the virtues embodied by the Three.

The Way of Sun and Stars tends to draw fewer boundaries. Its teachers speak of the Makers through the living world they left behind. To many of them, asking where the Makers ended and the Breath began is less important than learning to live properly within creation.

The Seylandri possess some of the oldest surviving speculation concerning the Makers, but even they claim no final knowledge. Their concern lies primarily with the Saël and the great harmony of existence rather than attempts to reconstruct beings lost before memory.

The Vulkah are characteristically reluctant to speculate aloud. Some of their oldest teachings speak of foundations beneath the world and of laws older than stone, but outsiders know little more.

Among ordinary people, the Makers are rarely discussed at all.

A farmer may live an entire life knowing that the Makers made the world while never once considering what sort of beings they were.

There is planting to be done.

The Problem of Suffering
The Makers present philosophers with a difficulty that worship of the Powers does not entirely resolve.

If they shaped the world, why did they shape one capable of suffering?

Why hunger?

Why disease?

Why death?

Why allow beings to choose cruelty?

There are many answers and no agreement.

Some argue that a world capable of genuine choice must also permit terrible choices.

Some say that growth is impossible without change and that change necessarily includes loss.

Others insist that the question arrogantly assumes mortals are capable of judging the architecture of existence from within it.

A few darker schools conclude simply that the Makers were neither benevolent nor cruel.

They were Makers.

Whether creation was intended for mortal happiness may be an entirely mortal concern.

The Powers offer no universal solution to this problem.

Ardis answers suffering with mercy.

Inglorian answers injustice with action.

Vannimar seeks understanding.

Korda ensures that all suffering eventually reaches an end.

Those are responses to the world.

They do not explain why the world was made as it is.

The Makers and Mortal Freedom
One fact fascinates philosophers more than almost any other:

the world permits refusal.

The Powers cannot compel virtue.

Saël resists absolute control.

Mortals can betray their principles, reject divine guidance, misunderstand revelation, commit atrocities, repent, forgive, create, destroy, and begin again.

Whether the Makers deliberately designed this freedom is unknown.

But it exists.

Some theologians therefore regard mortal choice as perhaps the greatest surviving clue to the Makers' intentions.

If creation were meant merely to obey, obedience could have been built into it.

Instead, the world contains beings capable of saying no.

Even to Powers.

The Makers and the Great Wrath
The Great Wrath presents another uncomfortable lesson.

The world did not prevent it.

Seylandri and Dragha wielded powers capable of devastating vast regions. Forests burned. Peoples died. Great Workings wounded places so deeply that their effects endured for centuries.

The Makers did not return.

The Powers did not simply end the war.

Saël itself bore the scars.

For many thinkers, the Wrath destroyed the comforting idea that some higher order must always intervene before mortals or elder peoples go too far.

Creation has laws.

It has guardians.

It has consequences.

It does not have a parent perpetually reaching down to take the knife away.

The Makers and the Comet
The appearance of the Great Comet has revived ancient speculation.

Its coming disturbed old workings, coincided with strange manifestations of Saël, and preceded events that have transformed the politics and faith of the Sigil Lands.

Some proclaim it a sign from the Makers.

Most serious theologians are considerably more cautious.

There is no evidence that the Makers send signs at all.

The Comet may be an omen.

It may be a natural event with profound Saëlic consequences.

It may belong to some order of creation no mortal yet understands.

Or people may simply be doing what people have always done when confronted by something immense and unexplained:

trying to discover a message intended specifically for them.

The Makers remain silent.

The Oldest Mystery
The Powers can sometimes be encountered.

Eidra can be seen.

The Saël can be sensed.

Miracles occur.

The dead pass toward the Far Fields.

Even the strangest teachings of religion concern things for which the Sigil Lands provide some evidence.

The Makers are different.

Everything points backward toward them.

Nothing points clearly beyond them.

They are known entirely by consequence.

The world exists.

It possesses order.

It possesses life.

It possesses freedom.

It possesses the Breath.

Something made this so.

Beyond that lies mystery.

Perhaps the Makers intended it that way.

Perhaps intention itself is too mortal a word.

Whatever the truth, every temple, forest, kingdom, grave, Power, mortal heart, and living breath exists within the work they left behind.

The Makers need no shrine.

The world is their monument.
