= The Powers =

The '''Powers''' are the great conscious principles of creation: beings in whom such things as justice, mercy, wisdom, courage, desire, ambition, destruction, grief, endurance, and countless other dimensions of existence possess awareness and will. They are immensely powerful, unmistakably real, and have been known to mortals since before the beginnings of recorded history.

They are not the creators of the world.

That distinction belongs to the [[Sigil:Makers|Makers]], the ancient demiurges who shaped creation and afterward transcended it. The Powers exist within the world the Makers left behind, moving through the same [[Sigil:Saël|Saël]] that breathes through mortal beings, spirits, forests, stone, and sea. For this reason some theologians call them the '''Heirs of the Makers''', though the title implies stewardship rather than descent.

The Powers may command forces that mortals find unimaginable. A Power could still a storm, move stone, or alter the course of a river with little effort. Yet these demonstrations are almost incidental to what the Powers actually are. Their deepest concern lies not with controlling matter, but with the principles they embody and with the choices of conscious beings.

A mountain is easily moved.

A heart is not.

== Living Principles ==

It is tempting to describe the Powers as gods ''of'' particular things: a god of war, a goddess of healing, a god of knowledge. Such language is convenient, but it badly understates them.

[[Sigil:Ardis|Ardis]] is not simply a goddess who happens to supervise healing. She is associated with healing because '''mercy, compassion, preservation, renewal, and care''' are central to what she is.

[[Sigil:Inglorian|Inglorian]] is not merely the patron of warriors or kings. His concern is '''justice, courage, duty, rightful strength, and the proper exercise of authority'''.

[[Sigil:Vannimar|Vannimar]] is not simply the keeper of books. Vannimar embodies '''wisdom, memory, inquiry, understanding, and the difficult search for truth'''.

The same principle applies to all the Powers. Natural phenomena may become associated with them through culture, symbolism, or ancient experience, but a Power is never merely the celestial owner of a particular object or activity.

The Powers are ideas made conscious.

== Real Gods, Mortal Religions ==

The existence of the Powers is not ordinarily a matter of faith.

They answer prayers. The [[Sigil:Gift|Gift]] is real. Their Eidra have appeared throughout history. Some of the elder peoples preserve traditions from ages when the Powers walked the world far more openly than they do today. Even those who reject a particular religious tradition seldom deny that the Powers themselves exist.

Religious disagreement therefore tends to concern '''interpretation rather than existence'''.

What does justice require in a particular case? When does mercy become indulgence? Does wisdom counsel patience or action? What responsibility does strength impose upon the strong? Is an apparent miracle truly an act of a Power, the work of an Eidron, or something arising through Saël by another means?

These questions can provoke fierce argument because they matter enormously to mortal life. Yet the certainty that the Powers themselves are real places limits upon how far theology can drift from observable reality.

A priest may misunderstand a Power.

A temple may become corrupt.

A religious institution may mistake its own customs for eternal truth.

The Power remains what it is.

== No Temple Owns a Power ==

The Powers are far older than the faiths built around them.

Ardis existed before the Triadic Faith placed her beside Inglorian and Vannimar. Inglorian was known under other names before the first Triadic temple was raised. Korda's duty predates every Grey Temple that now invokes him.

No religion possesses exclusive rights to a Power.

This is one reason religious practice in the Sigil Lands can appear tangled to outsiders. A person devoted to one Power may still honor another. A follower of Rhugash may owe gratitude to Ardis. A Triadic worshipper may entrust a dead parent to Korda's Grey Priests. A household may preserve an ancient local rite while sincerely considering itself Triadic.

Such behavior is not necessarily contradiction.

The Powers are real beings, not denominational property.

If Ardis shows mercy to an Uragh, she does not first inquire whether he belongs to her church.

== The Many-Named ==

Across the long history of the Sigil Lands, the same Powers have been known under many names and images. A Power may be represented as male in one country, female in another, or without sex at all in a third. One culture may imagine Inglorian as an armored judge, another as an aged king, another as a traveler bearing a sword that remains sheathed until justice requires it.

These forms are not necessarily contradictory.

The Powers are capable of appearing as they choose, and mortal cultures inevitably interpret beings of such scale through familiar images. The name used in a temple is therefore not presumed to contain the entirety of the being invoked.

This is why old theologians sometimes call them the '''Many-Named'''.

A name identifies a relationship.

It does not define the Power.

== The Powers and Mortal Freedom ==

For all their strength, the Powers cannot simply compel mortals to become what they wish them to be.

This may be the most important limit upon divine power.

Inglorian can inspire justice. He cannot make an unjust ruler righteous by force.

Ardis can offer mercy. She cannot compel a heart to forgive.

Vannimar can reveal knowledge. Wisdom still requires someone willing to understand it.

The Powers may influence circumstance, grant the Gift, send dreams, act through Eidra, or intervene in rare moments of enormous consequence, but mortal choice remains stubbornly mortal.

The world would be very different otherwise.

This is why religious teachings in the Sigil Lands generally concern the present life rather than threats of eternal punishment. Justice, mercy, wisdom, courage, honesty, and compassion are worth pursuing because they make mortal life better. A village governed justly is better than one governed by fear. A family capable of mercy survives wounds that vengeance would deepen. Wisdom prevents courage from becoming folly.

The virtues are not coins paid toward some future reward.

They are treasures in themselves.

== The Powers Do Not Need Worship ==

The Powers are not strengthened by prayer and do not fade when forgotten.

Entire cults have disappeared while the Powers they worshipped remained unchanged. Other Powers once prominent among the Rhone are now little invoked except in old stories, while the Three have risen to extraordinary cultural prominence during the past few centuries.

This tells us about mortal history, not divine rank.

The Powers do not compete for congregations like rival kings seeking territory. Nor does a forgotten Power necessarily resent neglect. Worship is a mortal relationship with the divine, not nourishment upon which divinity depends.

This helps explain why the Powers themselves seem remarkably unconcerned with the boundaries mortals place around their religions.

They have endured too many of them.

== Justice, Mercy, and Wisdom ==

The three Powers most influential among modern Rhone civilization are [[Sigil:Inglorian|Inglorian]], [[Sigil:Ardis|Ardis]], and [[Sigil:Vannimar|Vannimar]], collectively revered through the [[Sigil:Triadic Faith|Triadic Faith]].

Their prominence rests partly upon a powerful moral insight: justice, mercy, and wisdom correct one another.

Justice without mercy easily becomes cruelty. Mercy without wisdom can preserve what should be confronted. Wisdom without justice may understand suffering perfectly while doing nothing to stop it. Strength without either justice or mercy becomes domination.

The Triadic Faith did not create these principles or these Powers. It recognized a relationship among them and built a religious tradition around that relationship.

Its influence spread because these virtues proved useful not merely in temples but in courts, homes, hospitals, schools, armies, councils, and ordinary disputes between neighbors.

The Three promise no paradise merely for praising them.

Their virtues are meant to improve the world in which people already live.

== Powers Beyond the Triad ==

The Triad is only one constellation within a much larger divine world.

[[Sigil:Korda the Gatherer|Korda the Gatherer]], '''Watcher of the Quiet Gate''', fulfills an appointed task unlike that of the Three. Korda is not the Power of death and does not cause it. Death belongs to the natural order established by the Makers. Korda cannot ordinarily hasten a death, postpone one, or bargain it away. His duty begins when mortal life has ended: he gathers the traveler, protects the passage, and guides the dead toward the [[Sigil:Far Fields|Far Fields]].

The Uragh honor [[Sigil:Rhugash|Rhugash]], whose traditions concern courage, truth, fire, endurance, and the testing of the heart. His worship reflects the hard circumstances and uncompromising values of the plains, but Rhugash is no simple god of savagery or war.

Other Powers are remembered through older Rhone traditions, regional cults, the [[Sigil:Iron Covenant|Iron Covenant]], and faiths beyond the Rhone lands. Some once commanded temples larger than those of the Three. Others have always remained local or secretive. Their importance rises and falls with peoples and ages.

The Powers themselves endure.

== Light and Shadow ==

Mortals frequently divide the world into comforting categories of good and evil.

The Powers are more difficult.

Some embody qualities almost universally cherished. Others represent forces mortals fear, distrust, or struggle against within themselves. Yet destruction, ambition, grief, desire, anger, and even deceit cannot simply be removed from creation without changing what existence is.

This does not mean all behavior is equally good, nor that every Power should be followed.

A principle can be real without being wise to surrender oneself to it.

The old traditions grouped several feared Powers beneath the name [[Sigil:Shadow Court|Shadow Court]], but the name describes mortal unease more than a unified divine faction. The Powers do not neatly divide themselves into opposing armies of light and darkness.

A Power associated with destruction is not necessarily plotting against Ardis.

A Power of ambition need not hate Inglorian.

Mortals create pantheons.

The Powers simply are.

== Eidra and the Stranger ==

The Powers rarely walk openly in the world in the present age. Instead, tradition holds that they sometimes act through the [[Sigil:Eidra|Eidra]]: messengers, servants, emanations, or temporary expressions of divine purpose.

Stories about Eidra are famously difficult to verify.

A beggar rebukes a cruel priest, disappears, and is later remembered as an Eidron of Ardis.

A wounded old soldier tells a victorious lord that justice is not vengeance. A century afterward, the story insists Inglorian sent him.

A child asks a learned Vannimari scholar the one question that exposes the flaw in an elaborate doctrine.

Were these truly Eidra?

Perhaps.

Perhaps they were merely beggars, soldiers, and children whose words deserved to be remembered.

The uncertainty is part of the lesson. The stranger before you need not be divine in order to deserve justice, mercy, or attention.

Across the Sigil Lands, such stories have repeatedly served as warnings against religious certainty becoming religious arrogance.

== The Powers and Religion ==

Because the Powers are objectively real, the religious history of the Sigil Lands has generally been less consumed by disputes over divine existence than might otherwise be expected. Because most priesthoods are decentralized, no universal church possesses the machinery to impose a single doctrine upon every realm.

There have nevertheless been persecutions, temple riots, holy wars, political struggles, and periods of terrible religious violence.

The [[Sigil:Temple Wars|Temple Wars]] marked the long and uneven rise of Triadic institutions over many older local cults and traditions. The name refers not to one continuous war but to generations of disputes, seizures, riots, feuds, reforms, and occasional military conflicts involving temple lands, legal authority, religious patronage, and the changing customs of Rhone society.

The later Crusades against the Vorghol were different again. No supreme priest ordered the realms to march. Kings, nobles, temples, orders, and allies had to be persuaded into coalition. The Third Crusade became possible chiefly because King Henrick of Angharais, after meeting the Vorghol hunter Kane, used his personal authority and kinship among the royal houses to build that alliance.

Faith can inspire war.

It cannot command armies merely by existing.

== The Powers in Everyday Life ==

For most people, none of this requires much theology.

A farmer may ask Ardis to spare a sick child. A magistrate may invoke Inglorian before judgment. A scholar lights a lamp before an image of Vannimar. A dying person's family sends for a Grey Priest because Korda will soon be needed. An Uragh speaks to Rhugash beside the clan fire.

People know the Powers are real.

They do not necessarily spend much time wondering about their metaphysical classification.

Religion is lived through marriages, funerals, oaths, festivals, hospitality, justice, healing, work, remembrance, and the countless small decisions by which people reveal what they actually value.

That is where the Powers matter most.

Not in arguments over the heavens.

In what mortals do to one another.

== Known Powers ==

The following Powers are among those best known in the Sigil Lands. This is not a complete accounting; no mortal catalogue is believed to contain them all.

'''[[Sigil:Cholai|Cholai the Trickster]]''' — an old and widely remembered Power whose traditions survive in stories, local observances, and older cults.

'''[[Sigil:Szilard|Szilard]]''' — a Power associated especially with Dragha tradition and the mystery of living flame.

Other names survive in regional cults, old chronicles, songs, and the records of the Temple Wars. Some once possessed great temples. Others may never have had more than a roadside shrine.

Their stories will be added to the Codex as they are recovered.
