= Korda the Gatherer =

'''Korda the Gatherer''', called the '''Watcher of the Quiet Gate''', is the Power charged with guiding and protecting the mortal dead upon their passage from life toward the [[Sigil:Far Fields|Far Fields]]. He is not the Power of death, does not cause death, and possesses no authority to decide when a mortal life should end. Disease, accident, murder, war, hunger, and old age belong to the natural order established by the [[Sigil:Makers|Makers]]. Korda comes afterward.

His task is not to judge the dead.

It is to find them.

People are complicated creatures. They die frightened, confused, grieving, angry, unwilling, burdened by promises, clinging to loved ones, or simply unable to understand that their mortal lives have ended. Some lose the road. Some refuse it. Some are prevented from taking it by forces that should not exist.

Korda's appointed duty is to gather such travelers, protect them upon the passage, and guide them toward the Quiet Gate.

What lies beyond that Gate is not his kingdom.

Perhaps it is not even his to know.

== The Watcher of the Quiet Gate ==

The title '''Watcher of the Quiet Gate''' is older than most surviving Grey Temple liturgy and expresses the heart of Korda's nature more clearly than any description of him as a lord of the dead.

He does not rule the dead.

He accompanies them.

Nor is the Gate understood as a place of punishment, trial, or judgment. It marks the boundary beyond which the concerns of mortal life no longer apply. Hunger, sickness, wounds, age, fear, and the daily burdens of survival belong to this side of the road.

The living cannot say with certainty what existence in the Far Fields is like.

They know chiefly what it is not.

The dead no longer suffer the illnesses that killed them. They do not fear failed crops, unpaid debts, winter cold, or advancing age. Those separated in life may be reunited there, and old traditions hold with particular confidence that children lost young are not lost forever.

What they do afterward remains one of the greatest mysteries of faith.

Korda does not explain.

He only brings them there.

== Death Is Not Korda's ==

One of the most important teachings of the Grey Temple is also one of the most frequently misunderstood.

'''Korda does not bring death.'''

A healer cannot bargain with Korda for another year of life because the year is not his to give. A murderer cannot claim that Korda desired the victim because the killing was a mortal act. A child dying of fever has not been “called by Korda.” Disease killed the child. Korda's duty begins only when healing has failed and life has ended.

This distinction matters deeply to the Grey Priests.

They do not comfort the bereaved by pretending that every tragedy was divinely intended.

Some deaths are natural.

Some are preventable.

Some are cruel.

Some are crimes.

Korda did not choose them.

His compassion lies elsewhere: no matter how death came, the traveler should not face what follows alone.

== The Gatherer ==

Korda's oldest and most widespread title is simply '''the Gatherer'''.

The name does not imply ownership. Souls are not his possessions, nor does he collect them as a king collects taxes.

He gathers because people scatter.

A sudden death may leave someone bewildered. A murdered person may cling to the site of violence. A parent may refuse to leave a surviving child. Someone who died far from home may believe they must somehow return before they can move onward.

The Grey Temple teaches that Korda meets such people patiently.

Stories rarely depict him commanding.

He waits.

He speaks.

He walks beside them.

Sometimes this is enough.

Where it is not, his [[Sigil:Eidra|Eidra]] may help protect, guide, or disentangle a traveler from whatever has held them behind.

This understanding produced one of the oldest sayings of the Grey Priests:

== Beasts and the Natural Road ==

Korda's charge does not extend personally to every creature that dies.

The world would become absurd if every fallen sparrow, slaughtered cow, dead beetle, or winter-frozen fly required the personal attention of a Power.

Most creatures know their place in the natural order more readily than people do.

They pass.

Korda's Eidra guard the wider passages of living things and protect that natural movement where necessary, but animals rarely become lost in the way mortals do. They do not ordinarily burden themselves with unfinished promises, guilt, denial, ambition, or fear of what comes next.

The Grey Priests summarize the matter with a saying that is affectionate enough to have become almost proverbial:

Beloved animals occupy a special place in popular belief. A dog that shared a household for fifteen years, a child's pony, a hunter's hawk, or another creature deeply bound to a person's life may be encountered again in the Far Fields.

The Grey Temple offers no elaborate doctrine for how this occurs.

It merely sees no reason that love should count for nothing.

The common saying is simpler:

'''All dogs find the Far Fields.'''

== Korda and the Far Fields ==

Korda is associated with the [[Sigil:Far Fields|Far Fields]], but he does not rule them.

This distinction is essential.

He guides the dead toward the Quiet Gate. What lies beyond appears to belong to an order larger than Korda's appointed task, perhaps one established by the Makers themselves.

The Far Fields are described through pastoral imagery because mortal language requires some image for peace. Old hymns speak of distant meadows, long roads ending beneath warm skies, houses where lamps remain lit, and loved ones waiting beyond the last hill.

Whether any of this is literally true is impossible to know.

The Grey Priests commonly warn:

'''Do not mistake the image for the thing.'''

The Fields are how the living imagine release from mortal burdens.

No trustworthy account describes what the dead actually do there.

Perhaps there is no day and night.

Perhaps there is no labor.

Perhaps mortal language simply stops being useful at the Gate.

What the tradition preserves is not a geography but a reassurance:

The dead are beyond pain.

They are not abandoned.

They are not separated forever from those they love.

For most people, that is enough.

== Korda and Undeath ==

Undeath is an offense against Korda's appointed task, but not because the dead belong to him.

They do not.

Undeath obstructs the road.

A ghost trapped by terror or obsession, a corpse animated through sorcery, a Devourer, or one of the Vorghol presents a different form of the same wrong: something has prevented a mortal being from passing cleanly out of life.

This is why the Grey Temple has always opposed practices associated with [[Sigil:Kuralkar|Kuralkar]] and other traditions that interfere with the natural passage of the dead.

The conflict is not territorial.

Korda is not jealous that another Power has “stolen his souls.”

The image preferred by Grey Priests is much sadder:

'''A traveler has been prevented from reaching the road.'''

Where rescue remains possible, rescue is the ideal.

Where corruption has passed beyond recovery, destruction may become mercy.

== The Vorghol ==

The existence of the [[Sigil:Vorghol|Vorghol]] presents one of the most terrible contradictions in Korda's faith.

A Vorghol body continues while the natural mortal passage has been interrupted, twisted, or denied. Whatever the exact metaphysical nature of the transformation, Grey Priests consider Vorghol existence a profound violation of the order of life and death.

This belief has made the Grey Temple one of the most consistently hostile religious institutions toward the Mastery of [[Sigil:Tael Neydra|Tael Neydra]].

Yet Korda's opposition should not be mistaken for hatred of the persons who became Vorghol.

Many were victims.

Some drank Vorghol blood under force, desperation, or deception.

To destroy such a being may therefore be understood as grim release rather than vengeance.

The Grey tradition is blunt:

'''No one should be trapped forever because of what was done to them once.'''

== The Grey Temple ==

The mortal religious order devoted to Korda is commonly called the '''Grey Temple''', and its clergy the '''Grey Priests'''.

Despite the name, there is no single centralized institution governing every Grey Priest across the Sigil Lands. Like most religious traditions, the Temple is a network of local houses, burial grounds, hospices, mortuary communities, wandering clergy, and regional customs connected by shared rites and beliefs.

Their work is intensely practical.

Grey Priests wash and prepare bodies, supervise burials, maintain cemeteries, sit vigil with the dying, comfort families, record the names of the dead, investigate suspected hauntings, and intervene when something has disturbed the proper passage from life.

They also perform duties others prefer not to contemplate.

A body recovered weeks after death must still be treated with dignity.

A battlefield must still be cleared.

Someone must identify the unnamed.

Someone must tell a family that no miracle is coming.

The Grey Temple exists because death produces work for the living even before Korda's own work begins.

== The Grey Temple in Tael Neydra ==

The Grey Temple is effectively '''defunct in Tael Neydra'''.

Whatever houses and burial traditions existed before the Fall were destroyed, abandoned, absorbed, or driven underground after the rise of the Mastery. A public institution dedicated to the proper passage of the dead could hardly coexist comfortably with a regime ruled by the Deathless Masters.

Old Grey shrines remain in ruined towns, forgotten cemeteries, and places where the Shroud has swallowed the roads. Some still bear traces of the old symbol. Others have been deliberately defaced.

Funerary practices among surviving Tael Neydrans endure unevenly. Families preserve fragments of old prayers, burial customs, and protective rites, often without clergy to explain them. A village may still lay a grey cloth over the face of the dead because someone's grandmother remembered that it was done, even though no Grey Priest has visited in generations.

The destruction of the order does not mean Korda has abandoned Tael Neydra.

Mortal institutions can be destroyed.

His duty remains.

== The Grey Priests and the Dying ==

Grey Priests are often summoned before death, though they possess no authority to hasten or postpone it.

Their presence is pastoral.

They help people prepare.

A dying person may confess fears, ask that messages be carried, settle unfinished affairs, name those who should receive treasured possessions, or simply request that someone remain beside the bed.

The Grey Priest offers reassurance without pretending certainty about things no living person knows.

When asked what waits beyond the Gate, an honest priest does not invent celestial architecture.

They may instead say:

'''You will not hurt there.'''

'''You will not be alone.'''

'''Those you have lost are not lost forever.'''

Then they remain.

Sometimes that is the only ministry possible.

== Funerary Customs ==

Grey Temple rites vary widely by region, but several customs recur throughout the Rhone lands.

The dead are normally washed.

Their names are spoken aloud.

A grey cloth or ribbon may be placed across the body or tied around one wrist.

A small lamp is often lit nearby, representing the road rather than the soul itself.

The corpse is never addressed as though Korda has taken possession of it. Instead prayers ask that the traveler be found, guarded, and shown the way.

One traditional formula says:

</blockquote>

Burial is common but not universal. Local custom may favor tombs, cairns, cremation, sea burial, or other practices. The Grey Temple generally considers the treatment of the dead more important than the disposition of the body.

The person has already begun the journey.

The body is what the living must honor.

== The Quiet Gate ==

Korda's principal symbol is the '''Quiet Gate'''.

It is usually represented as a simple open doorway or narrow stone arch beneath a small star, lamp, or crescent of pale light. The opening is left empty.

Nothing is depicted beyond it.

That absence is deliberate.

The symbol does not pretend knowledge the Faith does not possess.

An older secondary symbol is the '''grey lantern''', used especially by wandering priests and those who tend battlefields or plague houses. The light represents guidance rather than judgment.

Neither symbol includes a skull, scythe, or hourglass.

Korda is not the Reaper.

He is the one carrying the lamp.

== Portraits of Korda ==

Korda is traditionally depicted as a solitary traveler in a grey cloak, often carrying a staff or lantern.

His face is seldom clearly shown.

Some artists portray an old man whose expression suggests immeasurable weariness. Others show a younger figure whose age cannot easily be guessed. A few traditions depict Korda as female, particularly in regions where the duties of preparing the dead traditionally belonged to women.

As with the other Powers, no image is considered definitive.

The most important element is not Korda's appearance but his position.

He is usually walking beside someone.

Rarely ahead.

Never enthroned.

One common image shows Korda sitting beside a frightened child on a roadside while a gate glows faintly in the distance.

Another depicts the Watcher standing quietly beside a battlefield after everyone else has gone.

Neither image shows him triumphant.

The Gatherer's task is necessary.

That does not mean it is joyful.

== Does Korda Love His Duty? ==

The question has troubled Grey theologians for centuries.

No one knows.

Some traditions describe Korda as serene, regarding his task as an honor entrusted to him since ancient times. Others portray him as profoundly sorrowful, forever meeting people at the moment they have lost everything familiar.

A popular hymn implies that Korda himself grows weary but never abandons the road.

This possibility has made him particularly beloved among people whose own lives consist of necessary work they did not choose.

The mother sitting beside a sick child.

The soldier standing watch in the rain.

The gravedigger in winter.

The healer who has lost another patient.

Duty does not require enjoyment.

Sometimes the noblest thing a person can say is:

'''Someone must do this.'''

== The Gift of Korda ==

Those who bear the [[Sigil:Gift|Gift]] through Korda are rare but widely respected.

Their Graces commonly concern protection from spirits, resistance to fear, perception of the dead, easing hauntings, safeguarding burial places, comforting the dying, and opposing undead beings.

A Kordan Gifted is not necessarily a Grey Priest.

Nor are most Grey Priests Gifted.

The ordinary work of tending the dead requires no miracle.

Soap, linen, a shovel, patience, courage, and kindness accomplish most of it.

When something refuses the natural order, however, a miracle may become useful.

== Korda and Ardis ==

[[Sigil:Ardis|Ardis]] and Korda are often invoked near the same deathbed, but their duties do not overlap.

Ardis remains while there is life to preserve, pain to ease, or healing still possible.

When life ends, Korda's road begins.

Neither is regarded as defeating the other.

A healer who loses a patient has not necessarily failed.

Korda arriving does not mean Ardis withdrew her mercy.

There comes a point beyond which healing would require undoing mortality itself, and mortality is part of creation.

The old saying is:

== Korda and the Other Powers ==

Korda stands somewhat apart from many of the great religious groupings.

Triadic worshippers rely upon his priests.

Followers of the [[Sigil:Old Faith|Way of Sun and Stars]] honor him.

People who rarely pray to anyone still want the Grey Priest when someone dies.

This independence reflects his function.

Justice, mercy, wisdom, courage, harvest, kingship, and ambition can become matters of culture and interpretation.

Everyone dies.

For this reason Korda's shrines are often tolerated even where other foreign religious practices are discouraged.

The dead need the road regardless of politics.

== The Watcher's Mercy ==

Korda's mercy is quieter than Ardis's.

Ardis tries to preserve.

Korda accepts that preservation has ended.

His compassion lies in refusing to let the ending become abandonment.

He offers no promise that death will be fair.

It often is not.

He offers no explanation for why one child dies while another lives to old age.

He may not know.

His task is simpler and, in its way, more profound.

When someone reaches the place where no living companion can continue with them, someone will still be there.

The road will not be empty.

The Gate will not be unguarded.

And no traveler who loses the way need remain lost forever.
