= Lalochai — The Trickster =

'''Lalochai''' is the Trickster among the Powers, patron of wit, reversal, chance, deception, escape, embarrassment, improvisation, and the sudden collapse of certainty. He is known by many names, including '''Cholai''', and traditions disagree over which names are ancient, which are regional, which are titles, and which may simply be jokes that endured long enough to become sacred.

Lalochai has almost as many names as he has tricks, and no one agrees which of either came first.

To call him merely a god of jokes is to misunderstand him. Laughter is one of his tools, but his deeper concern is with the dangerous confidence that arises when people become too certain of themselves, their plans, their laws, their rank, their knowledge, or their interpretation of the world. Wherever certainty hardens into arrogance, Lalochai appears in stories to loosen it again.

Sometimes he does this gently.

Sometimes he is cruel.

Sometimes nobody is certain whether he did anything at all.

== The Power of Reversal ==

Lalochai is associated above all with reversal: the king mistaken for a beggar, the thief who becomes the rescuer, the wise man fooled by a child, the prisoner who escapes because the guard follows the rules too precisely, the boastful warrior defeated by someone half his size, the solemn ceremony ruined by an animal wandering through at exactly the wrong moment.

Such reversals are funny because they expose something hidden.

A person believed the world worked one way.

Then it did not.

For this reason, Lalochai is not merely the Power of disorder. Chaos for its own sake interests him far less than disruption that reveals truth. A meaningless accident is only an accident. A perfectly timed absurdity that exposes vanity, hypocrisy, or false confidence is the kind of thing people attribute to Lalochai.

Whether they are right is another question.

His devotees are careful about certainty.

That is rather the point.

== The Many Names ==

Different peoples know Lalochai by different names, and even within a single region the name may change according to context. '''Lalochai''' is the most widely recognized form among the Tobon and in many Rhone lands, while '''Cholai''' survives strongly in older songs and certain local traditions.

Other names are encountered in folktales, roadside shrines, children's rhymes, thieves' cant, and the sayings of wandering performers. Some may refer to the same Power. Some may once have belonged to local spirits later identified with him. Some may have been invented by storytellers who wanted a convenient name for an old joke.

Lalochai's followers tend to regard attempts to settle the matter as evidence that scholars have too much free time.

One Tobon saying observes:

The joke contains a theological point. A Power whose nature includes slipperiness, ambiguity, and reversal should not be expected to fit comfortably inside a single name.

== The Tobon and the Holy Jesters ==

Lalochai is particularly beloved among the [[Sigil:Tobon|Tobon]], whose religious traditions include the '''Holy Jesters'''. These figures are not merely entertainers attached to temples. Their role is to ridicule pretension, interrupt excessive solemnity, expose hypocrisy, and remind communities that wisdom can survive laughter.

A Holy Jester may perform at a wedding, funeral feast, council, market, religious festival, or public trial. Their license is broad but not unlimited. They are expected to aim upward rather than downward. Mocking the powerful for arrogance is sacred work. Humiliating someone already powerless is usually regarded as cowardice dressed as humor.

The distinction matters because Lalochai's tradition does not teach that cruelty becomes holy simply because someone laughed.

A good Holy Jester makes the proud uncomfortable.

A bad one merely makes the weak miserable.

Tobon communities tend to know the difference.

== Laughter and Truth ==

Lalochai shares an interesting border with [[Sigil:Vannimar|Vannimar]]. Both are concerned with error, misunderstanding, and the limits of certainty, but they approach these problems very differently.

Vannimar asks whether you have understood the question.

Lalochai steals the question, replaces it with a chicken, and waits to see what you do.

The distinction is not frivolous. Vannimar represents disciplined inquiry, context, memory, and judgment. Lalochai represents the moment when disciplined systems fail because reality contains something nobody planned for.

A scholar can be wise and still become trapped by their own categories.

A ruler can be just and still become rigid.

A healer can be compassionate and still assume that everyone wants the same kind of help.

Lalochai's lesson is that certainty must remain flexible enough to survive contact with the world.

For that reason, his stories often end not with the protagonist acquiring new knowledge, but with them learning humility.

== Trickery and Deception ==

Lalochai is associated with deception, but this does not mean he blesses every lie.

A swindler who cheats the poor is not automatically serving the Trickster. A tyrant who conceals a crime is not clever merely because the deception succeeds. Lalochai's tradition judges trickery partly by what it reveals, what it escapes, and whom it serves.

Deception used to escape oppression may be admired.

A disguise that allows someone to cross a dangerous border may be blessed.

A false trail that saves refugees from pursuit may become the subject of a Lalochai hymn.

A lie told to inflate one's own importance is more likely to become the setup for a joke.

The Trickster's ethics are therefore difficult to reduce to simple rules. His devotees often say that the difference between cleverness and corruption lies in whether the trick creates freedom or merely takes advantage of weakness.

There are exceptions, naturally.

Lalochai would hardly be Lalochai if every story behaved itself.

== Escape ==

Among thieves, prisoners, fugitives, travelers, and people trapped in impossible circumstances, Lalochai is often invoked as a Power of escape.

This aspect of him is especially popular among the Tobon Wanderfolk, for whom roadcraft, improvisation, and the ability to leave trouble behind are practical virtues. A locked gate, blocked road, dishonest toll collector, hostile official, or sudden storm may all become occasions for a quiet appeal to the Trickster.

The prayer is rarely formal.

''“Lalochai, show me the crack.”''

The crack may be literal.

More often it is not.

A successful escape in his tradition usually depends on seeing the possibility everyone else missed.

== Chance and Luck ==

Lalochai is frequently associated with luck, but he should not be understood as a simple dispenser of good fortune. Gamblers pray to him, of course, though many have discovered that praying to a Trickster before wagering money carries obvious risks.

His relationship with chance is more complicated.

Lalochai represents the fact that plans are never complete.

Dice roll strangely.

Ropes snap.

Rain arrives early.

A guard sneezes.

A horse refuses to move.

A dropped cup rolls beneath exactly the right table.

People attribute such things to him because chance is one of the ways certainty becomes vulnerable.

This does not mean every coincidence is divine intervention. The Powers do not need to micromanage every accident in creation, and Lalochai in particular seems unlikely to reward anyone who insists that every spilled drink must be a revelation.

Still, when coincidence becomes almost offensively appropriate, someone usually laughs and says his name.

== The Trickster and Authority ==

Kings, magistrates, priests, scholars, and other people entrusted with authority tend to have complicated relationships with Lalochai.

Wise rulers tolerate his festivals.

Very wise rulers sometimes attend them.

Foolish rulers ban them.

This nearly always improves the stories.

Lalochai's tradition does not reject authority itself. A law may be necessary, a ruler may be just, and a priest may be wise. The danger begins when institutions forget that they were created for purposes larger than themselves.

The Trickster asks uncomfortable questions.

What happens when a law produces injustice?

What happens when custom outlives its reason?

What happens when a priest values dignity more than mercy?

What happens when a scholar prefers being correct to discovering the truth?

His followers rarely phrase such questions politely.

That is part of their usefulness.

== Lalochai and the Triad ==

The [[Sigil:Triadic Faith|Triadic Faith]] has never fully embraced Lalochai, but neither has it successfully pushed him to the margins of religious life.

Many Triadic priests find his stories useful precisely because they challenge the moral failures that can arise within Justice, Mercy, and Wisdom. Inglorian without humility can become rigid. Ardis without discernment can become indulgent. Vannimar without self-doubt can become arrogant.

Lalochai is particularly fond of all three mistakes.

Some temples therefore permit Holy Jesters to perform during festivals or public feasts, though the arrangement is often tense. A Jester invited into a temple cannot always be relied upon to mock only other institutions.

This is widely considered the risk one takes.

== The Trickster and the Powers ==

Stories frequently place Lalochai in conflict with other Powers, though no one assumes these tales describe literal divine history. In some he tricks a stronger Power into revealing a hidden truth. In others he steals something, loses it, wins it back, and discovers that the object was worthless to begin with.

He is especially often paired with solemn figures.

The contrast is irresistible.

Rhughash watches while Lalochai distracts the guards.

Vannimar studies the map while Lalochai asks whether anyone checked the road.

Inglorian constructs a fair judgment while Lalochai points out that the accused has been standing in the wrong courtroom.

Korda, perhaps alone among them, is difficult to embarrass.

The dead have already lost most of their pretensions.

== Lalochai and the Eidra ==

The Eidra associated with Lalochai are notoriously difficult to identify because disguise, coincidence, and misdirection belong naturally to his stories.

A beggar may expose a corrupt official.

A child may ask the question that ruins a scholar's argument.

A drunken performer may tell the truth nobody else will say.

A prisoner may escape because a stranger left a key exactly where it could be found.

Was the stranger an Eidron?

Perhaps.

Or perhaps it was only a stranger.

Lalochai's tradition regards certainty about such matters with suspicion.

One of the oldest sayings of the Holy Jesters warns:

== Sacred Disorder ==

Some Lalochai festivals deliberately invert ordinary social expectations. Servants may mock masters, children may judge adults in mock courts, priests may be required to answer foolish questions, and local dignitaries may surrender ceremonial authority to jesters for part of a day.

These reversals are temporary.

That is important.

The purpose is not to destroy social order but to remind society that order is constructed, fallible, and dependent upon people remembering why it exists.

When the festival ends, offices resume and responsibilities return.

Ideally, the people holding them return slightly less convinced of their own magnificence.

== Shrines and Offerings ==

Lalochai has relatively few grand temples. His shrines appear instead in liminal and inconvenient places: crossroads, market alleys, roadside inns, ferry landings, theater entrances, gambling houses, caravan yards, and near gates where travelers wait to be admitted.

A shrine may consist of a small carved face, a laughing mask, a crooked coin, a painted door that opens nowhere, or three stones deliberately arranged incorrectly.

Offerings are equally unpredictable.

Dice.

Buttons.

Bent keys.

Cheap wine.

A stolen object returned anonymously.

A joke written on a scrap of paper.

A coin with two heads.

The value of the object matters less than the wit behind it.

Expensive gifts offered solely to impress Lalochai are considered especially likely to disappear.

== The Gift of Lalochai ==

Those who receive the [[Sigil:Gift|Gift]] through Lalochai often manifest Graces associated with escape, disguise, misdirection, luck, quick thinking, persuasion, concealment, improvisation, and the disruption of plans.

Such Gifts rarely resemble orderly miracles.

A lock may prove improperly set.

A pursuer may choose the wrong road.

A costume may become unexpectedly convincing.

A fall may land somewhere survivable.

A disastrous mistake may reveal an opportunity no one noticed before.

As with every Gift, the Power is not a machine that can be commanded to produce desired results. Lalochai is perhaps less machine-like than most.

Those who rely too confidently upon his favor frequently discover that this confidence was itself the thing in need of correction.

== Priests, Jesters, and Wanderers ==

Lalochai has no unified priesthood. Holy Jesters are his most recognizable devotees, but wandering performers, storytellers, gamblers, thieves, itinerant judges, caravan folk, actors, musicians, and professional fools may all honor him.

Some communities maintain permanent Jester traditions, while others recognize only individuals who have assumed the role through reputation and long practice.

There is no universal ordination.

This has caused endless arguments among organized religious authorities.

Lalochai's followers appear delighted by this.

A person claiming to speak for the Trickster is therefore viewed with immediate suspicion even by other devotees. Authority over Lalochai's tradition is difficult to maintain because the tradition itself treats unexamined authority as a recurring source of comedy.

== Portraits of Lalochai ==

Lalochai is depicted in more forms than almost any other Power.

He may appear as a thin smiling traveler, a masked jester, an old woman with bright eyes, a beautiful youth, a ragged beggar, a prosperous merchant, a fox-faced figure in a festival mask, or a person whose features cannot quite be remembered afterward.

No form is considered authoritative.

Some images show him with mismatched shoes or clothing fastened incorrectly. Others give him a cloak lined with bells that somehow make no sound. Tobon art often depicts him seated backward on a chair or walking in one direction while looking in another.

A recurring motif is the half-smile.

It suggests that Lalochai knows something the viewer does not.

Whether he actually does is another question.

== The Symbol of Lalochai ==

Lalochai's most common symbol is the '''Crooked Smile''', a simple curved line interrupted by a single upward notch near one end. It can be scratched into wood, chalked beside a doorway, carved beneath a table, or drawn quickly in dust.

The mark is deliberately ambiguous.

It may be a smile.

It may be a road bending unexpectedly.

It may be a hook.

It may be nothing more than someone drawing badly.

Holy Jesters insist that attempts to standardize it miss the point.

A secondary symbol is the '''Broken Circle''', usually drawn as a nearly complete ring with a visible gap. The meaning is similarly open to interpretation: no system is complete, every enclosure has an exit, and every certainty leaves something outside itself.

Both symbols are easy to reproduce and difficult to regulate.

This appears to please his devotees enormously.

== The Value of Folly ==

Lalochai's deepest teaching may be that folly is not the opposite of wisdom.

Sometimes folly is the path by which wisdom becomes possible.

A person who never risks embarrassment may never admit error. A ruler who cannot tolerate mockery may never hear criticism. A scholar who cannot laugh at a failed theory may cling to it long after evidence has turned against it.

The Trickster does not ask people to abandon seriousness.

He asks whether seriousness has become a disguise for fear.

The world is not tidy enough to reward certainty forever.

Plans fail.

Titles become ridiculous.

The powerful trip.

The fool notices what the wise overlooked.

The locked door turns out not to be the only way out.

And somewhere, perhaps, Lalochai is laughing.
