= Kursa: The Slayer =

'''Kursa''' is the Power of despair, surrender, desolation, and the inward unmaking by which suffering convinces a mortal that nothing remaining in the world is worth the effort required to continue. She is called '''the Slayer''', '''the Queen of Bats''', '''the Bone-Mother''', '''the Lady of Despair''', and, in the darkest old traditions, '''the Mother of Suicide'''. These titles have made her one of the most feared Powers of the Sigil Lands, but she is not a Power of death in Korda's sense, nor does she govern the dead. Kursa's realm is among the living, in the moment when grief ceases to feel temporary, failure begins to resemble destiny, and the future itself appears empty.

To reduce Kursa to a goddess of suicide would miss the larger and more terrible principle she embodies. Despair does not begin with death; it begins when suffering loses proportion. A real grief becomes the whole world, one failure becomes every future attempt, one betrayal becomes proof that loyalty does not exist, and one unbearable night presents itself as an eternal condition. Kursa's power lies in this transformation of pain into certainty. The pain may be real, but the conclusions it whispers are larger than the evidence allows.

For this reason, the oldest teachings about Kursa often emphasize naming and measure. Grief can be named. A wound can be described. A night has a beginning and an end. To give suffering boundaries does not make it trivial, but it denies despair's claim to be everything.

== The Slayer and the Last Light ==

Kursa's title '''the Slayer''' refers less to physical killing than to the destruction of those things by which people continue living: expectation, confidence, attachment, purpose, and the belief that tomorrow may differ from today. In the worst stories, Kursa does not need to strike anyone down because the person under her shadow begins doing her work for her. This gave rise to the fearful title '''Mother of Suicide''', particularly in periods of famine, siege, plague, or war, although no mainstream tradition treats self-destruction as sacred obedience to her.

The central paradox of Kursan mythology is the '''Last Light'''. Old tales speak of the Pit of Despair, an immeasurable depth filled with every abandoned hope, humiliation, unfinished grief, and private sorrow mortals have carried. Yet somewhere in its deepest darkness burns one tiny white-gold flame that Kursa cannot extinguish. The stories disagree over what it means. Triadic teachers commonly call it hope; Old Faith traditions sometimes associate it with the stubborn vitality of [[Sigil:Saël|Saël]]; harsher traditions call it defiance, the last refusal to become nothing when every gentler reason for endurance has failed.

No interpretation is authoritative. The important point is simply that the light remains. Kursa has existed longer than mortal memory, yet the oldest stories insist that something within the darkness is beyond her power to erase.

This should not be mistaken for a doctrine that despair is secretly beneficial. Despair can injure, destroy judgment, isolate people from those who love them, and kill. Some who survive it emerge stronger, others emerge scarred, and many survive chiefly because someone else refused to leave them alone. The Last Light does not mean suffering ennobles. It means suffering is not identical with the whole of reality, even when it feels that way.

== Kursa and the Three ==

The Triadic traditions approach Kursa from three directions, each revealing a different limit to despair. [[Sigil:Ardis|Ardis]] answers her through presence. Kursa says that suffering isolates and that care was a mistake; Ardis moves toward the suffering person anyway, bringing water, changing bandages, remaining through the night, and returning the next day. The Ardisian answer to despair is therefore often less theological than practical. A person need not believe that life is worthwhile before someone begins treating their life as worthwhile.

[[Sigil:Vannimar|Vannimar]] challenges despair's certainty. Kursa's voice favors absolutes: ''always'', ''never'', ''nothing'', ''everyone'', ''no one''. Vannimari teachers observe that suffering may be entirely real while the conclusions drawn from it remain unproven. One betrayal does not establish that loyalty is impossible, one failure does not reveal the outcome of every future attempt, and one period of loneliness does not constitute knowledge of the future. Vannimar's answer is not optimism but disciplined uncertainty: ''What do you actually know?'' The answer may still hurt, but it is usually smaller than despair claimed.

[[Sigil:Inglorian|Inglorian]] is invoked through courage, although mature Triadic teaching rejects the idea that courage means merely enduring everything without complaint. There are burdens that should be laid down, battles that should be abandoned, and abusive rulers, families, or institutions whose demands for endurance serve only themselves. Kursa's surrender is not the decision to stop doing one destructive thing; it is the conviction that nothing else can begin. Asking for help, leaving an impossible situation, admitting weakness, or accepting that one cannot continue alone may therefore be acts of courage rather than defeat.

== Kursa and Korda ==

Kursa and [[Sigil:Korda|Korda]] are sometimes linked in folk imagination because both stand near the boundary between endurance and ending, but their functions are fundamentally different. Korda's duty begins after mortal life has ended; Kursa works among those who are still alive. Korda guides travelers whose road has come. Kursa persuades the living that their road has already ended.

The Grey Temple is particularly firm on this distinction. Korda does not call people out of life, and death is not a reward for having suffered enough. The Watcher receives those whose mortal span is complete; he does not shorten the span because living has become painful. This teaching became especially important in regions devastated by war and plague, where collective grief sometimes produced cults that recast self-destruction as a form of release.

To the Grey Priests, that is a confusion of two Powers whose duties do not overlap.

== The Iron Covenant ==

The [[Sigil:Iron Covenant|Iron Covenant]] gave Kursa a harsher interpretation. Its priests called her the '''Pale Bride''' and regarded despair as one of the final ordeals through which mortal strength might be measured. A person stripped of comfort, certainty, reputation, companionship, and hope would discover whether anything remained beneath them.

At its harshest, this teaching became cruel. Those broken by despair could be dismissed as having failed their test, allowing survivors to interpret survival as proof of superior character. Later traditions have strongly criticized this view. A person crushed beneath unbearable grief has no more demonstrated moral inferiority than someone crushed beneath falling stone has demonstrated defective bones.

Yet a less brutal strand survived within the Covenant itself. No discipline, strength, wealth, wisdom, or martial reputation makes a person immune to despair. The strongest warrior may one day find no reason to rise; the wisest scholar may know every argument for hope and still be unable to feel it. Kursa therefore exposes not merely weakness but the limits of every form of mortal strength.

She knows where people break.

That does not mean she deserves gratitude for finding the place.

== Bats at Noon ==

The bat is Kursa's most famous animal association, and the phrase '''bats at noon''' has passed into ordinary speech. Bats belong to twilight and darkness; their appearance beneath the midday sun creates the unsettling sense that something private has crossed into the open. A ruler who abruptly abandons office, a celebrated warrior who collapses after the war has been won, or a prosperous household suddenly shuttered may prompt someone to murmur that there are bats at noon.

The omen need not imply direct supernatural intervention. Like much religious language in the Sigil Lands, it has become a way of describing human experience through the imagery of the Powers.

Other Kursan omens carry the same theme of visible form emptied of expected meaning. Wine turns bitter while remaining otherwise unchanged. Lamps continue burning but give no warmth. Familiar music produces no pleasure. These images express despair better than spectacular destruction would. Everything appears intact, yet something essential has gone missing.

This is the character of Kursa's influence. She does not always destroy.

Often she hollows.

== The Queen of Bats and Bone-Mother ==

The title '''Queen of Bats''' survives most strongly in folk religion and rural storytelling, where Kursa is depicted beneath ruined towers or under moonless skies while clouds of bats wheel above her. Later artists made the image increasingly theatrical, but older stories emphasize the creatures' ability to move confidently through darkness. This has led some later devotees to reinterpret the bat in a way the harshest Kursan traditions probably never intended: darkness does not prevent movement merely because ordinary sight has failed.

'''Bone-Mother''' is older and stranger. The title is often interpreted as referring to what remains after the identities through which people understood themselves have been stripped away. A king loses his throne, a warrior can no longer fight, a parent loses a child, a craftsman loses the use of a hand, or beauty disappears through illness or age. Kursa asks what remains when the thing someone believed themselves to be is gone.

The old stories do not always answer triumphantly. Sometimes the answer takes years. Sometimes another identity grows around the wound. Sometimes nothing replaces what was lost, and a person simply learns to live differently. Kursa's significance lies partly in refusing the comforting fiction that every loss can be neatly repaired.

== Shrines, Rites, and the Night of Wings ==

Open worship of Kursa is uncommon in most modern Rhone lands, but shrines survive in places marked by collective suffering: ruined fortifications, plague grounds, old battlefields, remote hospices, and settlements repeatedly struck by famine or war. Some devotees approach her not because they love despair but because they believe she already knows the country through which they are traveling. Soldiers sometimes leave tokens for comrades who survived battle but not what followed it; mourners may leave something associated with a life they can no longer recover.

The old '''Night of Wings''' survives in altered form even where formal Kursan worship vanished centuries ago. People write griefs, guilt, regrets, or burdens upon scraps of cheap material and burn them, bury them, or carry them beyond the settlement. Older versions reportedly involved releasing bats, though most modern communities sensibly allow bats to manage their own religious participation.

The surviving rite expresses a distinction central to later Kursan thought: letting go of something is not the same as letting go of oneself. Not every burden deserves eternal loyalty.

== The Gift and the Eidra ==

Those who bear the [[Sigil:Gift|Gift]] through Kursa are rare and often misunderstood. Their Graces tend toward the perception of concealed anguish, resistance to despair or emotional coercion, the breaking of compulsive attachments, the quieting of overwhelming emotion, and the ability to endure psychic or spiritual desolation without becoming lost within it. A Kursan Gifted may possess the unsettling ability to recognize suffering in people who have concealed it from everyone else, which can make the Gift as burdensome to its bearer as it is useful.

Her [[Sigil:Eidra|Eidra]] are equally ambiguous. Stories describe veiled women, exhausted soldiers sitting apart from victory celebrations, silent widows, wandering strangers, and figures who speak one devastatingly accurate sentence before disappearing. Some tales make them cruel, pressing directly upon whatever wound the subject most wishes hidden; others describe someone who merely sits beside a suffering person until dawn and leaves without explanation.

Whether these strangers are genuinely Eidra is unknowable.

Sometimes a person who understands despair is simply a person who understands despair.

== Manifestations and Symbols ==

Kursa is most commonly represented as a veiled woman dressed in violet, black, or cold silver, with only ember-dull eyes visible beneath the veil. Her customary weapon is a narrow crescent-shaped blade, sometimes rendered as glass, black metal, or nearly transparent crystal. The weapon represents severance rather than ordinary violence: the cutting of hope from expectation, identity from the thing upon which it depended, or attachment from what has been lost.

Sacred art rarely shows Kursa raging. She stands quietly, often near enough to another figure that she could speak without raising her voice. The disturbing element is not what she does but what the viewer imagines she has said.

Her principal symbol is the '''Crescent Blade'''. Later forms place the tiny '''Last Light''' within the open curve of the crescent, making the image itself an argument: despair surrounds the light but cannot close upon it. The bat remains her most familiar secondary emblem, while the Black Sun survives chiefly in old Iron Covenant imagery.

== The Place of Kursa ==

It would be comforting to classify Kursa as an evil Power and leave the matter there, but doing so would make her less useful and less true to the world she embodies. Despair exists. It does not require divine invention, and mortals cannot abolish it simply by declaring that good people ought to remain hopeful.

Kursa gives despair a name and a face. Her presence in religion allows people to speak about the state in which courage, wisdom, faith, pleasure, and even love may become temporarily inaccessible. A religion that can speak only to people who already possess hope has very little to offer at the moment hope disappears.

The compassionate traditions therefore do not teach mortals to love Kursa or seek her trials. They teach people to recognize her country when they enter it, whether themselves or beside someone else.

If someone is in the Pit, do not lecture them about the view from the rim.

Go down if you can.
