== Background ==

John Norman was regarded as a prodigy long before he became Mentor. A polymath scientist and inventor, he achieved breakthroughs in multiple disciplines while still a young man and accumulated an impressive portfolio of patents and research achievements.

To Norman, however, ordinary genius was not enough.

Obsessed with expanding the limits of human consciousness, he developed an experimental device intended to enhance cognitive function far beyond natural human capacity. Norman used the machine on himself.

The results exceeded anything he had predicted.

The enhancement radically amplified his mind, awakening dormant psionic abilities and transforming him into one of the most formidable psychics on the planet.

== Death ==

Mentor met his end alongside the other members of [[Crucible:The Crusaders|the Crusaders]] during one of the most famous sacrifices in superhero history.

While investigating a catastrophic stellar instability in deep space, the Crusaders discovered that a nearby star was entering an artificial supernova state engineered by hostile extraterrestrial forces. The resulting explosion would have unleashed a wave of radiation and gravitational devastation powerful enough to sterilize Earth and much of the surrounding sector.

The Crusaders chose to intervene.

Working together, the team managed to alter the star’s collapse and redirect the worst of the blast away from inhabited worlds. The effort succeeded—but left the heroes trapped within the expanding supernova itself.

Mentor remained in psychic contact with Earth until the final moments of the catastrophe, coordinating evacuation efforts and guiding calculations even as the Crusaders’ ship was consumed by stellar fire.

No trace of the team was ever recovered.

The destruction of the Crusaders became one of the defining tragedies of the Silver Age, and their final mission remains remembered as one of the greatest acts of heroism in recorded history.
