Unlike imperial powers that expand through conquest, the Old Federation is a voluntary alliance devoted to trade, diplomacy, scholarship, cultural exchange, and the preservation of galactic peace.

The Old Federation began on Aiyama, a world whose scholars, philosophers, engineers, and civic leaders developed the first principles of what would become Federation culture: mutual benefit, open exchange, technological stewardship, and peaceful coexistence between worlds.

== Federators ==

'''Federators''' are elite interstellar agents empowered by the Source and authorized by the Federation’s governing AIs to intervene in threats to galactic peace. They serve as investigators, diplomats, peacekeepers, champions, and emergency responders when ordinary institutions cannot act quickly enough.

Federators are expected to uphold Federation ideals while operating far beyond its safe coreward worlds. Their missions may involve piracy, rogue warlords, interstellar conspiracies, alien invasions, technological catastrophes, or conflicts threatening to spread across star systems.

They are granted extraordinary autonomy, but also expected to exercise restraint, compassion, and wisdom.

== Earth-11717 ==

On Earth-11717, investigative reporter [[Crucible:Federator|Christopher Heath]] became the local Federator by accident. His unexpected empowerment drew Earth into contact with the wider responsibilities and mysteries of the Old Federation.

Heath’s role remains unusual by Federation standards, as Earth is distant from the Federation’s core regions and deeply entangled in the violent politics of Karnak and S'Taa space. His presence on Earth suggests that the Source may perceive the planet as more important to galactic destiny than most civilizations yet realize.

== Reputation ==

Across the inner galaxy, the Old Federation is regarded as ancient, cultured, and deeply civilized. It is not feared in the way empires are feared, but respected as a power whose patience should not be mistaken for passivity.
