The ''Vanguard'' is Watchstar’s advanced submersible, a specialized undersea vehicle designed to extend the team’s reach beneath the oceans. Built originally at [[The Gauntlet|the Gauntlet's]] instruction, the vessel was intended to give Watchstar the ability to investigate deep-water threats, conduct covert insertions, assist in maritime rescue operations, and respond to crises beyond the reach of conventional aircraft or surface craft.

== Overview ==

The ''Vanguard'' is based on a modified [[Andrews International]] hull design, extensively rebuilt for superheroic operations. Although its outer lines still suggest a compact military or research submarine, the vessel’s internal systems are far more advanced than its base design would imply. [[Crucible:Tech|Simon Matthews]] personally contributed several of the submarine’s most important upgrades, including its magnetohydrodynamic drive system and compact fusion power plant.

These improvements make the ''Vanguard'' unusually quiet, fast, and durable. It is capable of operating at depths of up to 1,000 meters and can reach underwater speeds of approximately 40 knots under ideal conditions. While not intended to fight naval battles, the submarine is tough enough to survive extreme pressure, evasive maneuvers, hostile environments, and the unpredictable hazards that accompany Watchstar missions.

== Name And Dedication ==

The vessel was named in memory of [[Crucible:Vanguard|Vanguard]], the late superhero and early member of Watchstar. The choice of name was deliberate. The submarine was not meant merely as a machine, but as a continuation of Watchstar’s commitment to stand at the front line of danger, whether that danger comes from the sky, the streets, deep space, or the ocean floor.

For older members of the team, the name carries considerable emotional weight. To newer members, it serves as a reminder that Watchstar’s history is built not only on victories, but on sacrifice.

== Design And Propulsion ==

The ''Vanguard'' uses a compact fusion reactor adapted for long-duration underwater operation. This power system allows the submarine to remain submerged for extended periods without the limitations of conventional fuel or battery systems. Many newer members of Watchstar did not even know it existed. That changed when [[Surge]] discovered the submarine shortly before the [[Crucible:Transasia|Transasian]] invasion of [[Crucible:Isola|Isola]], bringing the forgotten vessel back into active consideration.

Since then, the ''Vanguard'' has only been used a handful of times, but those missions have demonstrated its value. Its most notable recent operation was Watchstar’s rescue of the crew of United States nuclear submarine ''New Orleans'', a mission that proved the vessel could function under real pressure, in hostile conditions, and in circumstances where conventional rescue methods were inadequate.

== Role Within Watchstar ==

The ''Vanguard'' remains one of Watchstar’s more specialized vehicles. It does not see the constant use of the team’s aircraft, orbital resources, or rapid-response systems, but when an emergency lies beneath the ocean, there are few tools more valuable. It gives Watchstar access to an environment where many superheroes are limited, blinded, or entirely helpless.

In that sense, the ''Vanguard'' fulfills the purpose for which it was built. It extends the team’s reach into a world of pressure, darkness, silence, and hidden danger. Like the hero whose name it bears, it goes first into places where others cannot easily follow.
