=Rivers of Jhelum= [[File:RiversOfJhelum.png]] The rivers of Jhelum are its lifeblood. They carry trade, rumor, pilgrims, soldiers—and those who wish not to be found. Where the jungle devours roads, the rivers endure. They shift, they flood, they betray—but they never vanish. If you wish to travel far in Jhelum, you follow the water. == The Nature of the Rivers == Jhelum’s rivers are slow, wide, and treacherous. * Their banks change with the season * Sandbars appear where none were before * Floodwaters swallow whole villages during the monsoon The water is rarely clear. It carries silt, rot, and the memory of everything upstream. Boatmen say every river has moods. Wise travelers learn them quickly. == River Life == Along the rivers rise: * Stilt villages above the floodline * Dock markets that appear and vanish with trade * Temples built to face the water Life here is never still. Boats come and go at all hours. News travels faster than any runner—and is twice as unreliable. == Dangers of the Water == The rivers are safer than the jungle—until they are not. Travelers must contend with: * Crocodiles and unseen predators * Bandits who strike from concealed banks * Sudden storms that overturn even large vessels And always, the current. Those who fall into the river are not always found again. == The Jhelum River == The greatest of all rivers, from which the land takes its name. The '''Jhelum River''' is vast, slow-moving, and deceptively calm. It winds through the heart of the land, touching more cities, temples, and ruins than any other waterway. To travel the Jhelum is to see the whole of the world. * Merchant barges drift heavy with goods * Pilgrims journey to sacred sites along its banks * Patrol boats enforce tolls and laws—when they can It is said that everything eventually finds its way into the Jhelum. Some say the river remembers. == The Blackflow == A deep, shadowed river that runs beneath heavy jungle canopy. Even at midday, little light touches its surface. * Sound carries strangely here * Fires burn poorly near its banks * Boats move quietly, whether intended or not Many refuse to travel it. Those who do speak little of the journey. == The Serpent’s Run == A fast, winding river known for sudden turns and hidden hazards. * Strong currents pull vessels off course * Narrow passages force close navigation * River beasts are common It is favored by smugglers and those who wish to avoid attention. == The Pilgrim’s Way == A calmer river lined with shrines, temples, and resting places. * Travelers leave offerings at marked stones * Monks and devotees walk its length * Even brigands tread lightly here To spill blood upon its waters is considered deeply unlucky. == The Unnamed Tributaries == Beyond the great rivers are countless smaller waterways. Most have no agreed name. Some: * Appear only in the wet season * Lead to forgotten places * End where no river should end Maps are unreliable. Local knowledge is everything. == Final Word == The jungle may surround you. The cities may betray you. But the rivers— The rivers will carry you, if they choose to. {{NightcatsNav}} </div> [[Category:Nightcats]]
