== The Crownway ==

The great road connecting Highland and Lowland is the '''Crownway''', sometimes called by travelers the '''Road of Kings and Beasts'''.

Its oldest sections were laid after Grimyr's victory as part of the effort to bind formerly isolated valleys and settlements into a functioning realm. Rhessan tradition emphasizes that the road was built by free labor, paid obligation, and communal service rather than slave gangs, making the Crownway almost as much political monument as highway.

Today merchants, royal messengers, pilgrims, livestock drovers, horse traders, soldiers, and ordinary travelers follow it between Fort Winter and the regional roads. Inns, smithies, markets, shrines, and posting stations have accumulated along its length.

A king may rule Rhess from Fort Winter, but the Crownway is one of the reasons Fort Winter can reach the rest of Rhess at all.
