== The Dragon Beneath the Categories ==

Szilard's importance lies partly in what he prevents the religious world from becoming.

Without him, scholars might eventually imagine that the Powers could be catalogued neatly, their domains arranged, their relationships mapped, and the structure of divinity reduced to a comprehensible system.

Szilard ruins the diagram.

He may be a Power.

He may be something upon which the category of Power itself depends.

He may be less than the Powers in some ways and greater in others.

He may be a deep intelligence arising from the changing world, an ancient being whose scale has confused theology, or something for which mortal speech has no suitable noun.

The uncertainty is not expected to end.

Even Vannimar does not answer.

Perhaps wisdom lies partly in knowing when a name has stopped explaining the thing it names.

Szilard remains the Dragon beneath the categories, the Flame that is not merely flame, the immense suggestion that creation survives not by remaining what it is, but by becoming what it has not yet been.
