== Yan Doro and the Reavers ==

Yan Doro's relationship with the Red Reavers is necessarily contradictory. The Crown hunts crews that attack Doran merchants, seize moongold shipments, violate important harbors, murder subjects, or create diplomatic problems too serious to ignore, and Queen Mereth has ordered pirates hanged when their activities crossed boundaries she considered intolerable.

At the same time, Red Reavers frequent Doran taverns, sell goods through intermediaries, recruit Doran sailors, possess relatives in respectable island communities, and disappear into outer reaches where royal authority is weak or nonexistent. During wartime, captains previously regarded as criminals may suddenly become useful privateers if their hostility can be directed toward an enemy of the Crown.

This does not make the Reavers servants of Yan Doro. It makes Yan Doro a maritime kingdom attempting to live beside a phenomenon that no government on the Crimson Coast has been able either to control or eliminate.
