== Background ==

Marmaduke Shaw was raised within the religious Order of St. Dismas, a secretive sect devoted to honoring the penitent thief crucified alongside Christ. Members of the order practice theft as a sacred act, believing that skillful larceny, paired with selflessness, reflects both human fallibility and divine redemption.

In accordance with the order’s doctrine, Shaw never kept what he stole. All proceeds were anonymously redistributed to those in need, making his crimes acts of hidden charity.

Operating in New York City under the title ''Duke of New York,'' Shaw became the most accomplished cat burglar of his era. His exploits were marked by precision, daring, and an almost theatrical flair.

During this time, Shaw took in an orphaned boy, [[Crucible:Shadow|Deke Slye]], and raised him as his apprentice. The boy shadowed him constantly, learning every aspect of the craft—burglary, deception, sleight of hand, gambling cheats, and stealth. This constant presence earned him the nickname '''Shadow'''.

The Duke’s career came to a violent end during an attempted burglary of the penthouse of the crime lord [[Crucible:Petro|Petro]]. Discovered and confronted, Shaw was thrown to his death. His apprentice escaped.

That apprentice would go on to become a crimefighter.
