Before becoming Thrash, Devlin Payne served in the Australian military, where he quickly developed a reputation as a highly effective combat soldier. Aggressive, fearless, and physically gifted, Payne excelled in violent environments and earned praise from superiors for operational success under difficult conditions.

Unfortunately, he also possessed a deeply cruel streak that became more visible during deployments abroad.

Payne stole from civilians, abused prisoners, and participated in acts of violence that even hardened soldiers found disturbing. Though his effectiveness protected him for a time, repeated accusations eventually became impossible to ignore. Following a formal investigation into atrocities committed during overseas operations, Payne was court-martialed, imprisoned, and expelled from military service.

For Payne, the punishment was worse than prison itself.

The army had been the only structure he respected.
