== Founding And Incorporation == Unity City was incorporated in the postwar period, when the neighboring communities of the Narrows and Fort Sutter were merged into a single new municipality. The Narrows had been a busy river-and-rail town, built around docks, warehouses, bridges, factories, and tight old neighborhoods clustered near the water. Fort Sutter, by contrast, had grown around an old military post, later becoming a planned civic and administrative center with broad avenues, public buildings, parks, and residential districts. The merger was promoted as a symbol of postwar confidence. The new city would combine industry and order, old settlement and new planning, working-class grit and civic idealism. Its name was chosen deliberately. '''Unity City''' was meant to stand for cooperation, progress, and the idea that the old divisions of American urban life could be overcome by design, technology, and public purpose. The reality was more complicated, as it always is. Old rivalries between the Narrows and Fort Sutter did not vanish overnight. But the new city grew rapidly, and the name became more than a slogan. Unity City built itself around the belief that tomorrow could be engineered.
