== Background == Richard "Richie" Chan grew up in San Francisco’s Chinatown, living a relatively ordinary life—until a moment of crisis revealed something extraordinary. As a young boy, Richie and his parents were caught in a catastrophic accident on the Golden Gate Bridge. Their car was left dangling over the bay, moments from falling. In a surge of panic and desperation, Richie transformed for the first time—into a small, ape-like creature of surprising strength. In that form, he saved them. What followed was far more difficult. Over the next several months, Richie found himself transforming unpredictably—at school, at home, and in public. The changes were uncontrollable, disruptive, and frightening, making it nearly impossible to maintain a normal life. His situation changed when he was approached by [[Crucible:Doctor Li|Dr. Julian Li]], headmaster of [[Crucible:Pacific Academy|Pacific Academy]]. Recognizing Richie’s potential, Dr. Li offered him a full scholarship to the academy, a place where he could learn to understand and control his powers. Richie accepted.
