== The Dark Empire ==

Granbretan calls itself the greatest and most destined of realms. In one sense, it is right. No power in Europe can easily match its wealth, organization, or mastery of destructive science. It has forged conquest into a way of life. Its armies are not merely armies, but instruments of an imperial culture that believes itself born to rule lesser peoples.

Yet the empire is dark in more than name. It is dark in spirit. Its grandeur conceals rot. Its discipline conceals obsession. Its learning conceals sadism. Granbretan does not simply conquer lands; it deforms them. It strips old courts of dignity, breaks local loyalties, enthrones collaborators, raids archives and treasuries, enslaves craftsmen, and turns every captured province into a source of tribute, labor, and experiment.

Its rulers and nobles often speak as though empire were a form of art. This is a very Granbretanian way of looking at the world. To them, war is not only profit or necessity. It is theater. Terror is not only useful. It is beautiful. Submission is not only practical. It is proper. The empire believes itself entitled not merely to win, but to arrange the lives and deaths of others into forms pleasing to its own diseased imagination.
