== The Makers' Breath ==

The [[Sigil:Makers|Makers]] shaped a world capable not merely of existing, but of changing. Mountains rise and wear away; rivers alter their courses; forests advance and retreat; children become adults; bodies heal, fail, and die; grief fades or deepens; civilizations remember and forget. Creation is not a finished sculpture but a living process, always becoming something slightly different from what it was.

Saël is the name mortals give to that responsive quality of the world.

Some traditions say that the Makers breathed Saël into creation at the beginning. Others claim that when the Makers transcended, something of their presence remained behind as the Breath. Seylandri philosophers sometimes reject both explanations as too literal, arguing that Saël is simply one of the deepest conditions of existence, no more separable from the world than change itself.

No surviving tradition can prove its account. The Makers left no explanation.

What matters to those who live in the Sigil Lands is that Saël is here, and that the world responds through it.
