== The People of the Plains ==

The Uragh are unmistakably nonhuman. They are large and powerfully built, with skin ranging from dark green through grey-green to shades approaching slate, and considerably less body hair than the Rhone. Their faces are rugged, with small noses and narrow slitted nostrils, while their eyes have a distinctly nonhuman appearance. To people unfamiliar with them, even a relaxed Uragh face can appear severe or intimidating.

The Uragh naturally possess their own standards of beauty. They admire faces, bodies, voices, expressions, adornments, and qualities that need not correspond to Rhone tastes; a handsome Uragh does not resemble a handsome Rhone painted green. Within their own households they smile, laugh, tease, flirt, sulk, grieve, embrace their children, quarrel with siblings, complain about relatives, and become as foolish around people they love as anyone else. The tendency of outsiders to imagine the Uragh as perpetually grim says considerably more about the outsiders than about the Uragh.

Their voices add to this impression of strangeness. Uragh speech extends into deep growls and resonances that Rhone throats cannot easily reproduce, and sounds which seem threatening to an unfamiliar listener may be perfectly ordinary conversation. Pitch, resonance, rhythm, and tone carry distinctions immediately apparent to another Uragh. This vocal range is one reason horses generally dislike them: Uragh scent, size, and especially their deep voices can alarm horses badly, even when the Uragh intends no harm.
