== The Warg Years ==

During the disorder that followed the Great Wrath, Vulk withdrew still farther behind its fortress-cities as trade routes collapsed and much of the surrounding Rhone world fragmented into tribal warfare, petty lordships, and impoverished warbands. The Vulkah did not disappear entirely, however. Traders, guides, smiths, and small parties continued to move beyond the mountains, and Vulkah metalwork found its way into Rhone hands even when sustained diplomatic contact was rare.

As more stable realms emerged, those contacts expanded. Later Rhone traditions sometimes claim that the Vulkah '''taught humanity iron''', but the statement compresses a much more complicated history into a convenient legend. The Rhone possessed ironworking traditions of their own, yet the upheavals of previous centuries had damaged or destroyed much practical knowledge in many regions. Vulkah techniques, finished goods, tools, and instruction helped accelerate the recovery of sophisticated metalworking in several emerging kingdoms.

The Vulkah themselves do not claim to have invented the art. They merely preserved techniques that others had lost or forgotten, a distinction they consider considerably more accurate and quite sufficient.
