== Karn Vuldar == The greatest city of Vulk is '''Karn Vuldar''', seat of the Septhall and customary residence of the Underking. The city occupies an immense basalt massif cut through with halls, roads, chambers, and ancient underways, while its upper fortifications overlook glacier-fed valleys and narrow approaches that can be closed quickly in war. Great doors of ironwood and bronze guard the principal entrances, and bridges join separate shoulders of rock whose interiors have been inhabited for generations. The city's deepest public chambers contain the '''Septhall''', where the great Septs deliberate over matters affecting the whole realm. Nearby stands the '''Hall of the Sealed Flame''', where important decrees, treaties, and records are preserved. Its name is ancient, though the flame referred to in the title is not the Blue Flame of Tael Neydra and carries no connection to that tradition. Karn Vuldar is not beautiful in the fashion of Corvessa or Celonna, but the Vulkah would question the assumption that beauty requires delicacy. Its great halls are proportioned with extraordinary care, its columns carved from single masses of stone, and its relief work precise enough to remain legible after centuries of smoke, handling, and repair. Light enters through narrow shafts or is redirected by polished reflectors onto carvings that may predate the founding of every modern Rhone kingdom. The intended effect is not splendor for its own sake, but permanence made visible.
