== The Last Crusade ==

The Crusaders met their end in the double-sized final issue, ''THE CRUSADERS #300'', published in 1988 under the subtitle '''''The Last Crusade'''''.

The team was drawn into a deep-space catastrophe involving an inhabited alien world, Makassari, whose star was entering catastrophic supernova collapse. The resulting stellar explosion would kill billions on the planet. There was no villain to defeat, no device to smash, and no simple miracle left to perform. The Crusaders were confronted with an enemy they could not punch, outwit, or frighten away: time itself.

Rather than attempt to save themselves, the Crusaders committed every remaining moment to evacuating the doomed planet. Mentor used his psychic powers to coordinate the terrified population and guide the evacuation effort across impossible distances. Starblaze burned like a living beacon, leading refugee ships through stellar storms. Juggernaut grew to colossal size to hold collapsing launch structures and evacuation pylons in place. Puma teleported through ruined cities and burning corridors, rescuing those who could not reach the evacuation routes in time.

In their final hour, Mentor sought out [[Crucible:Black Sun|Black Sun]], the fallen Crusader once known as Starbolt, now serving time in [[Crucible:Vulture Island|Vulture Island]] in Nevada. The mission required light-based power on a stellar scale, and Mentor believed that his old friend still had one heroic act left within him. Black Sun accepted, not as a villain seeking pardon, but as Starbolt choosing to stand with the Crusaders one last time.

Starbolt’s final act was to become a living prism between the dying star and the escaping evacuation fleet, bending and absorbing the first catastrophic waves of stellar radiation long enough for the last ships to escape. The effort consumed him. Mentor remained beside him until the end, refusing to let his old friend die alone.

The supernova destroyed the planet and apparently killed the entire team, but the evacuation fleet survived. To the refugees they saved, and to the people of Earth who later learned the truth, the Crusaders’ final mission became one of the most revered sacrifices in superhero history.
