== “Practically Escape-Proof” ==

Gravesworth officials advertised the Vault as practically escape-proof. This was technically true for certain values of “practically.”

The Vault was far more secure than any ordinary prison of its time, and many inmates who would have escaped elsewhere were successfully contained there. But the Silver Age was not kind to words like “impossible,” “foolproof,” or “escape-proof.” Criminal scientists found design flaws. Super-strong inmates tested welds. Shapeshifters exploited guard rotations. Teleporters exposed assumptions no architect had considered. Criminal teams attacked from outside. One infamous incident involved a villain who escaped because his powers were triggered by the very containment field meant to suppress them.

Each escape or attempted escape led to upgrades, inquiries, lawsuits, and confident statements that the facility was now more secure than ever.

In fairness, Gravesworth’s record was better than its critics claimed. The Vault prevented many disasters and kept numerous dangerous offenders under control. But its failures became legends, and in superhero history, a single spectacular jailbreak can outweigh years of successful incarceration.
