== The Sorcerer-Scientists == Granbretan’s most terrible advantage lies in the hands of its savants, artificers, natural philosophers, surgeons, alchemists, engineers, and sorcerer-scientists. These are not wizards in the common fantasy sense. Their works are rooted in ancient sciences, broken technologies, chemical arts, occult traditions, surgery, breeding, mechanics, and disciplines no ordinary kingdom fully understands. The line between science and sorcery has long since blurred. A machine may behave like a curse. A chemical process may look like witchcraft. A relic of the ancients may seem to possess a malign will of its own. The men and women who study such things are learned, dangerous, and often morally deformed by their work. Granbretan attracts them because it rewards results. A decent kingdom might forbid certain experiments. Granbretan asks only whether they are effective. Can a captive population be subdued more efficiently? Can a soldier be altered? Can a poison be dispersed across a valley? Can an engine shatter gates at greater distance? Can a beast be bred for war? Can a machine terrify as well as kill? These are the questions the empire encourages. Thus its laboratories become places of innovation without restraint. The result is not clean progress, but a hideous flowering of destructive ingenuity. Strange rays, mutagenic vapors, incendiary compounds, surgical transformations, flying war machines, armored engines, and devices whose principles are half-lost even to their users all fall under this umbrella of forbidden mastery. Granbretan’s savants do not always understand everything they command. This too is important. Much of the old world’s knowledge survives only in fragments. Recipes are preserved without full theory. Devices are repaired without grasp of their first design. Effects are reproduced by rote, improvisation, and perilous experimentation. This gives Granbretanian science its character: dazzling, practical, erratic, and often catastrophic.
