== Dragons and Szilard ==

The association between Szilard and dragons is ancient, but it should not be understood as a relationship of ruler and subject. Dragons are not his priests, servants, creations, or chosen people merely because mortals perceive a resemblance.

They are associated with him because dragons seem to embody something of the same scale and strangeness.

A great dragon is not merely a large animal. Its age, intelligence, memory, power, and relationship to the world place it somewhere beyond the ordinary categories by which shorter-lived beings understand life. To stand before one can feel less like encountering a creature and more like encountering weather, geology, or history given intention.

In this sense, dragons resemble Szilard more closely than most beings do.

Whether they understand him better is another matter.

Some ancient stories imply that certain Auld Wyrms recognized Szilard not as a god but as something nearer to kinship. Other traditions insist that this is mortal romanticism projected backward onto beings whose actual beliefs remain obscure.

No dragon has provided a theology that mortals can agree upon.
