== The Coral Keep ==

High above the harbor stands the '''Coral Keep''', the fortified royal residence from which the rulers of Yan Doro have watched the masts below for generations. Despite its name, the keep is constructed principally of pale limestone and dark volcanic stone, though decorative coral and shellwork appear throughout its courts and sea-facing galleries.

The Coral Keep is palace, fortress, archive, treasury, and signal station in equal measure. From its upper towers royal lookouts can observe vessels entering the outer approaches, while flags and lanterns communicate with watch posts positioned along the reefs. Its lower halls contain charter records, mining concessions, treaties, customs agreements, maritime judgments, and generations of correspondence between rulers and captains who invariably believed their own particular quarrel to be unprecedented.

The royal treasury also contains the Crown's reserve of moongold, some of it held as worked objects and ceremonial plate but much of it stored in standardized ingots. In times of war or financial crisis, these reserves give the monarchy resources that few island rulers elsewhere could easily match.

The court lacks the stiff ceremonial character associated with many Rhone monarchies. Admirals, merchants, pilots, shipwrights, miners, foreign envoys, island chiefs, moneylenders, and captains may all find themselves waiting in the same galleries, and rank does not always determine whose business reaches the sovereign first. A prince arriving with compliments may wait while an exhausted mine-master reporting a collapsed shaft or a harbor official bringing news of a storm is admitted immediately.

No Doran ruler who forgets where the kingdom's wealth actually comes from remains effective for long.
