== Active Balance System ==

Keeping a small armored capsule upright atop three hundred feet of narrow hydraulic structure is the platform’s greatest technical challenge.

An '''active balance computer''' constantly predicts motion rather than merely reacting to it. The system monitors the operator’s movements, wind pressure, ground conditions, structural deflection, hydraulic load, and the position of every cylinder stage. It then makes thousands of minute corrections through the legs and shoulder assemblies.

Its sensor network includes:

* Lidar scanners
* Inertial measurement units
* Ground radar
* Wind sensors
* Continuous strain gauges
* Cylinder-position monitors
* Footpad load sensors

At great height, the extended stilts flex visibly. The balance system treats this flexibility as a controllable feature, allowing the machine to sway under stress instead of snapping. Hydraulic Man may feel movement in the capsule several seconds before it reaches the footpads far below.

The computer also coordinates walking. Each step requires the platform to shift its center of gravity over one stilt, unlock the other foot, retract or advance the free leg, establish secure contact, and redistribute the load. To observers this produces a slow, deliberate gait at maximum height and a surprisingly nimble stride at lower extension.

Hydraulic Man can override the computer and assume more direct control.

This is almost always a mistake.
