== The World Pushes Back ==

Those who work with Saël quickly learn that it is responsive without being obedient. The world has habits, and those habits matter.

Small changes are easier than great ones. Temporary changes are easier than permanent ones. Workings that cooperate with existing patterns are easier than those that violently contradict them. Healing a wound assists a body in doing something it already seeks to do; creating life from lifeless stone would require reality to accept an entirely different condition.

This resistance is one reason magic in the Sigil Lands is slow, careful, and limited. Reality does not yield merely because someone has enough will.

The best practitioners understand that they are never working upon an empty world. Every act must contend with what is already present: the nature of the material, the history of the place, the season, the surrounding life, and the strength of the pattern being altered.

The world may be persuaded.

It cannot simply be ordered about.
