== After the Fire ==

The Seylandri who survived the Great Wrath faced a different inheritance.

They knew what had been lost.

Modern Seylandri culture cannot therefore be understood simply as the preservation of an ancient golden age. Their ancestors survived the destruction of that age and deliberately rejected parts of it.

Power is treated with caution.

Knowledge is not assumed to be wisdom merely because it is ancient. Ability does not confer moral permission. The fact that something ''can'' be done is not considered sufficient reason that it ''should'' be done.

This restraint can appear excessive to younger peoples.

Sometimes it is.

A society can learn the lesson of catastrophe so thoroughly that caution becomes paralysis. Seylandri may debate decisions for years. Old clans can cling to precedents whose original circumstances disappeared centuries ago. Fear of repeating the Great Wrath can become an argument against taking risks that have little resemblance to it.

The Seylandri know this criticism.

They have been discussing it for a very long time.
