Outsiders associate the Vulkah with mining because much of the metal and stone exported from Vulk originates beneath the mountains.

Most Vulkah are not miners.

A fortress-city requires food, water, sanitation, transport, storage, administration, clothing, medicine, education, maintenance, trade, law, defense, and entertainment. Someone must haul goods between levels, inspect supports, repair drains, prepare meals, teach children, keep records, tend animals, negotiate contracts, settle arguments, and clean the Septhall after everyone has finished arguing.

Vulkah agriculture likewise reflects their environment. Surface holdings, sheltered valleys, underground cultivation, stored foods, livestock, trade, and careful management of water all contribute to feeding populations that cannot live upon mushrooms and stubbornness.

No Vulkah city is truly self-sufficient.

This is one reason trade matters so much.
