== The Five Baronies == Merant's sacred reputation can obscure the fact that it remains a feudal kingdom sustained by five distinct baronies. Each contributes something necessary to the life of the high country: food, roads, soldiers, trade, religious institutions, or defense. === Kercelon === The '''Royal Barony of Kercelon''' surrounds Celonna and forms the ceremonial heart of the realm. Orchards, cloisters, sacred ridges, pilgrim houses, and monastic villages fill its valleys, and much of its agricultural production exists specifically to feed the capital and the enormous numbers of pilgrims who pass through it. Kercelon is less worldly than the other baronies. Its landscape is dense with religious memory, and its inhabitants live with the constant knowledge that strangers from distant lands may regard an ordinary roadside shrine as the destination of a lifetime. === Kergorra === East of Kercelon lies '''Kergorra''', the principal gateway between Merant and the western reaches of Angharais. Granite tors, cold rivers, foggy uplands, and steep roads make it a difficult country, but generations of pilgrimage have made hospitality a defining local virtue. Its chief town, '''Trevannen''', grew around an old ring-fort later transformed into a monastery. There the '''Pilgrim's Hearth''', a perpetual public fire, welcomes those entering the high country. === Morvrenn === South and west of Celonna rises '''Morvrenn''', the wildest and highest of the baronies, a country of lightning-scarred peaks, cloud-filled valleys, glacial lakes, and remote monasteries reached only by arduous climbs. Morvrenn shelters the famous '''Sky Monasteries''', where ascetics may retreat for years in pursuit of contemplation. Its baronial seat, '''Henvras''', stands upon a triple-ridge saddle and is reached in part by the legendary '''Wayfarer's Ladder''', thousands of steps cut into the living rock. === Penastel === '''Penastel''' occupies gentler southeastern valleys where meltwater and warmer winds allow more extensive agriculture. Its terraced fields grow barley, herbs, fruit, and much of the food consumed in Celonna. The people of Penastel possess a reputation for warmer manners than their northern countrymen and tend to express their devotion through work, hospitality, and practical obligation rather than austerity. Its principal market town, '''Lanveris''', gathers traders from Merant, Angharais, Rhess, and Vulk into one of the great exchange points of the high country. === Brynkelloch === The northern '''Barony of Brynkelloch''' is Merant's military shield. Basalt ridges, pine-dark slopes, ravines, watchtowers, and fortified passes dominate its landscape, and its inhabitants cultivate a stern frontier identity. Its seat, '''Avellyn''', rises in concentric defensive rings around a volcanic plug. Even its principal Triadic chapel resembles a fortress, reflecting a local tradition in which devotion and vigilance are scarcely separable.
