== The Greater Islands ==

Yan Doro contains numerous inhabited islands and dependent communities, but several possess enough population, wealth, or strategic importance to shape the affairs of the whole realm.

'''Redmark''', lying toward the northern approaches, is the great shipbuilding center of Yan Doro. Its yards are famous for fast galleys, broad-bellied merchantmen, cutters, fishing vessels, and private warships built from imported timber and the harder woods available on larger islands. Redmark's shipwrights possess a reputation for temperament almost as celebrated as their workmanship, and arguments over hull shape, mast placement, or the proper seasoning of timber have occasionally outlived the vessels under discussion.

'''Talaris''' is gentler country, with sheltered valleys, vineyards, olive groves, grain fields, orchards, and scattered estates whose produce feeds both Yan Doro and passing ships. Its wines are exported widely, and its people enjoy a reputation for hospitality and deliberate speech that contrasts with the louder habits of Skell. Mariners who spend months at sea often speak of Talaris with peculiar affection, for its green hills and long meals represent nearly everything a ship cannot provide.

Several smaller volcanic islands within the Doran realm contain the richest known deposits of '''moongold'''. The largest workings descend through old lava beds and mineralized rock in narrow shafts where heat, flooding, unstable stone, and poisonous vapors make mining exceptionally dangerous. Entire communities have grown around these workings, with miners, engineers, guards, refiners, merchants, cooks, teamsters, and sailors depending upon the metal for their livelihoods.

'''Krev''' lies closer to the uncertain margins of royal authority. Its coves and broken coastline have long attracted traders seeking to avoid official attention, political exiles, smugglers, and captains whose relationships with the law vary according to the port in which the question is asked. Krev belongs to Yan Doro, but officials sent there learn quickly that belonging and obeying are not synonyms.

'''Myra's Chain''' forms a bleak southern string of storm-lashed rocks and narrow islands where safe anchorages are rare and weather changes with little warning. Small communities survive there by fishing, salvage, goat herding, and stubbornness, alongside hermits, religious houses, wreckers, fugitives, and others who regard difficult access as an advantage rather than a hardship. Doran pilots respect the people of Myra's Chain because anyone raised there learns early that the sea is indifferent to confidence.

Beyond the recognized islands of the kingdom lie innumerable other Sunscatter communities that trade with Yan Doro without belonging to it, accept Doran protection only when convenient, or acknowledge no sovereign at all.
