Deep beneath the Earth's crust, in vast cavern realms untouched by sunlight, dwells a strange and ancient race known as the '''Annelids'''. Though superficially wormlike in appearance, the Annelids are fully sentient beings whose evolutionary lineage stretches back to prehistoric ages long before humanity walked the Earth. Their civilization developed in darkness beneath the continents while dinosaurs ruled the surface above.

The Annelids possess elongated segmented bodies, leathery flesh, and highly developed sensory organs adapted for life underground. They navigate the deep strata of the world through vibrations, heat patterns, and subtle electrical signals imperceptible to humans. Their cities are said to lie within colossal tunnel systems carved through the mantle over millions of years.

Unlike humanity, the Annelids possess a communal biological memory. Scouts and explorers are periodically sent to the surface world to gather information about other civilizations. Upon returning home, these explorers willingly sacrifice themselves by being consumed in ritual feasts, allowing their memories and experiences to be biologically absorbed and distributed among the population. To the Annelids, this process is not viewed as death, but as the highest form of contribution to society.

For centuries the Annelids remained hidden from the surface world, emerging only rarely and usually under cover of natural disasters or seismic activity. Most encounters with them have been dismissed as legends, cryptid sightings, or hallucinations caused by underground gases.

One of the few Annelids to openly interact with humanity was [[Crucible:Tremor|Tremor]], originally dispatched to the surface as an observer. Over time, Tremor developed sympathy for humanity and ultimately chose to remain among them rather than return below. His actions caused considerable controversy among his people, many of whom view prolonged individuality and separation from the collective as dangerous and unnatural.
