'''The Beetle''' is the armored criminal identity of '''Barney Furley''', a timid but brilliant inventor from [[Crucible:Unity City|Unity City]] who transformed himself into a supervillain after discovering that fear commanded the respect his ordinary life never earned him. Hidden inside a hulking mechanical battlesuit equipped with drills, claws, and crushing strength, Furley became a recurring Silver Age menace to the [[Crucible:Unity League|Unity League]] and later a member of [[Crucible:The Marauders|the Marauders]].

Outside the armor, Barney Furley is nervous, apologetic, and painfully insecure.

Inside it, he feels ten feet tall.

== Barney Furley ==

Barney Furley spent most of his life being overlooked.

Bookish, awkward, and chronically timid, Barney possessed one extraordinary gift: an almost supernatural talent for machinery. He could repair nearly anything mechanical, often improving devices in the process without fully realizing how impressive his work actually was.

Unfortunately, talent alone was never enough to overcome Furley’s complete lack of confidence.

He struggled financially, failed repeatedly in business ventures, and spent much of his adult life drifting through low-paying technical jobs while watching less capable people achieve success he secretly believed should have been his.

What Barney wanted most was respect.

Money mattered.

Recognition mattered more.

Especially from women like his longtime crush, the perpetually unimpressed '''Miss Lurlene'''.

== The Armor ==

Desperate for money and increasingly bitter about his failures, Furley eventually began constructing an experimental powered armor suit in the basement of his small Unity City apartment building.

The project started as fantasy.

Then became obsession.

Working alone with scavenged parts, stolen industrial components, and improvised engineering brilliance, Barney created a massive armored exosuit equipped with:

* Hydraulic strength systems
* Reinforced armor plating
* High-powered drilling mechanisms
* Advanced electronics
* Offensive weapons systems

The resulting machine was astonishingly sophisticated considering its origins.

It was also terrifying.

== Becoming The Beetle ==

Wearing the armor, Barney adopted the identity of '''the Beetle''' and began robbing banks and armored transports throughout Unity City.

At first, the crimes were motivated purely by money.

Then something unexpected happened.

People became afraid of him.

And for the first time in his life, Barney Furley experienced what felt like respect.

The transformation proved psychologically intoxicating. Hidden behind steel plating and mechanical distortion, Furley shed much of the nervousness that defined his civilian identity. The Beetle barked orders, issued threats, and confronted superheroes directly — things Barney himself could scarcely imagine doing without the armor.

The suit did not merely protect him physically.

It gave him permission to become someone else.

== Enemy Of The Unity League ==

The Beetle repeatedly clashed with the [[Crucible:Unity League|Unity League]] during the Silver Age, becoming one of the team’s recurring second-tier armored villains.

Though often underestimated because of his anxious personality, Furley’s engineering genius and increasingly sophisticated armor made him far more dangerous than appearances suggested. On several occasions, the Beetle’s equipment rivaled military hardware and forced the League to treat him as a serious threat.

Particularly dangerous was Barney’s unpredictability under stress.

Fear, humiliation, or ridicule could trigger panicked aggression that made him surprisingly destructive.

== The Marauders ==

Recognizing both Furley’s technical brilliance and emotional vulnerability, [[Crucible:Mesmerio|Mesmerio]] eventually recruited the Beetle into [[Crucible:The Marauders|the Marauders]].

Within the team, Barney found something he rarely experienced elsewhere:

acceptance.

Even if it came from criminals and maniacs.

Mesmerio reportedly understood Furley almost immediately, manipulating his insecurities expertly while encouraging the Beetle persona that Barney increasingly preferred to his ordinary identity.

For a time, the Marauders gave him the closest thing he had ever known to confidence.

== Skills ==

Barney Furley is one of the Silver Age’s great underappreciated inventors.

His expertise includes:

* Electronics
* Mechanical engineering
* Robotics
* Improvised fabrication
* Vehicle systems
* Industrial machinery

Unlike corporate scientists backed by laboratories and governments, Barney created most of his technology alone in a basement workshop using salvaged components and raw ingenuity.

That fact alone impresses even heroes who dislike him.

== Beetle Armor ==

The Beetle armor remains Furley’s greatest creation.

Though bulky and industrial-looking by modern standards, the suit possesses remarkable capabilities, including:

* Heavy armor protection

* High-powered drills capable of penetrating steel
* Advanced communications systems
* Integrated offensive weaponry

Over the years, Barney continually modified and upgraded the armor, often incorporating increasingly bizarre or overcomplicated systems.

The armor reflects its creator perfectly:

brilliant, awkward, overengineered, and desperate to be taken seriously.

== Personality ==

Barney Furley is insecure, lonely, intelligent, emotionally needy, and deeply frustrated with his own life. Much of his criminality stems less from greed than from humiliation and the intoxicating emotional transformation the Beetle identity provides him.

The armor makes him feel important.

Dangerous.

Respected.

Without it, Barney often reverts to apologizing nervously even while discussing criminal plans.

This duality gives the Beetle an oddly tragic quality beneath the Silver Age absurdity. Barney genuinely could have become a celebrated inventor or industrialist under different circumstances.

Instead, he built himself a steel shell and hid inside it.

Emotionally as much as physically.

== Miss Lurlene ==

Throughout much of his criminal career, Barney remained hopelessly infatuated with '''Miss Lurlene''', a woman who either never realized the extent of his feelings or wisely chose not to encourage them.

To this day, Furley still seems convinced that one great triumph as the Beetle will finally earn the admiration he never received as Barney Furley.

It never does.

But he keeps trying.

== Legacy ==

The Beetle became one of the classic eccentric armored villains of the Silver Age, combining comic insecurity, garage-inventor brilliance, and tragicomic ambition into a recurring Unity League adversary.

Because Barney Furley never really wanted to conquer the world.

He just wanted someone to stop laughing at him.
