Most people are simply too dull to see it.” <br>— Contessa </div> Contessa is the criminal identity of Aldona Wellington-Smythe, a British aristocrat and adventurer whose exposure to an ancient artifact granted her the ability to open short-range teleportational “doorways.” Elegant, dangerous, and easily bored, she has turned privilege, curiosity, and power into a career of sophisticated villainy. == Origin == Aldona Wellington-Smythe was born into British aristocracy, surrounded by wealth, refinement, and social expectation. None of it satisfied her. Restless and contemptuous of ordinary life, she began traveling to remote and dangerous places simply to feel something sharper than boredom. During one such expedition, she encountered an ancient artifact of unknown origin. Exposure to the relic altered her, granting her the ability to step through space by opening what she called “doorways” to any place she could see. For Aldona, the discovery was liberation. Walls, guards, distance, and locked rooms became trivial inconveniences. == Criminal Career == Taking the name Contessa, Wellington-Smythe entered the super-criminal world with the confidence of someone who had never been taught that doors were meant to remain closed. Her teleportation ability made her an exceptional thief, infiltrator, and escape artist, while her social background gave her access to circles most criminals could never approach. She eventually became the leader of Black Sunday, shaping the group around precision, elegance, and ruthless execution. Under her direction, Black Sunday became less a blunt criminal gang than a scalpel, striking where defenses appeared strongest and vanishing before the response could arrive. == Changeling == Contessa was briefly married to Changeling, a relationship that remains one of the stranger intersections between the superhero community and the criminal elite. The marriage did not last, but it left both figures connected in ways neither entirely escapes. Whether the relationship was genuine, strategic, or some mixture of both remains a matter of speculation. == Powers == Contessa possesses a specialized form of teleportation. * Doorway Teleportation – Can instantly move herself to any destination within line of sight * Rapid Repositioning – Uses teleportation for evasion, ambush, and escape * Spatial Infiltration – Bypasses walls, locks, guards, and conventional security Her power is limited by what she can see, but within that limitation she is extraordinarily difficult to contain. == Skills == Contessa is more than her power. * Expert hand-to-hand combatant * Skilled adventurer and expedition survivor * Experienced infiltrator and thief * Socially adept and familiar with elite circles She combines aristocratic poise with practical ruthlessness. == Technology == Contessa does not rely heavily on technology. * Occasional use of specialized infiltration tools * Access to Black Sunday resources * Artifacts and relics associated with her expeditions Her teleportation ability usually makes conventional tools unnecessary. == Personality == Aldona Wellington-Smythe is elegant, arrogant, and thrill-seeking. She is not driven by poverty, desperation, or ideology, but by appetite. She wants danger, novelty, and the satisfaction of proving that no boundary truly applies to her. She can be charming when it suits her, but her charm is edged with contempt. To Contessa, most people are obstacles, servants, or entertainments. Very few are equals. == Legacy == Contessa represents villainy as privilege sharpened into weaponry. Her power lets her pass through walls, but her upbringing taught her to ignore boundaries long before the artifact ever changed her. As leader of Black Sunday, she remains a refined and unpredictable threat. Where others break in— Contessa simply enters. </div> CCNav
