First Appearance | SURGE #18 |} The Desperadoes were a gang of third-rate supervillains who desperately wanted to be taken seriously by the criminal underworld. Unfortunately, almost nobody else did. Consisting largely of C-list criminals, failed masterminds, washed-up fighters, and glorified gimmick villains, the Desperadoes developed a reputation for incompetence, bad luck, and disastrous planning. Though they imagined themselves as ruthless outlaw antiheroes, most other villain organizations regarded them as an ongoing joke. Unable to earn respect individually, the group eventually banded together in hopes that sheer numbers and publicity might elevate their status in the supervillain community. Instead, things generally became worse. The Desperadoes became infamous for plans that spiraled wildly out of control, accidental heroics, internal arguments, and catastrophically poor timing. Their fellow criminals mockingly referred to them as the "Legion of Losers." == The Ocean Liner Incident == The teamβs most famous adventure occurred during what became known as the Ocean Liner Incident. Disguised as tourists, the Desperadoes attempted to rob a luxury cruise ship on which Surge was honeymooning with his wife. Unfortunately for everyone involved, an alien expedition also targeted the ship, intending to steal the entire vessel and transport it to an extraterrestrial museum collection. The resulting chaos escalated into a bizarre three-way conflict involving the aliens, the Desperadoes, and members of SHOC. Through a combination of luck, panic, and complete confusion, the Desperadoes inadvertently helped defeat the alien invaders. Though they attempted to claim credit afterward, most heroes considered their involvement accidental at best. == Members == <div class="cc-roster-grid"> <div class="cc-roster-card"> Trickshot<br> Crenshaw Mellon is a former circus sharpshooter whose criminal ambitions vastly exceed his actual success rate. </div> <div class="cc-roster-card"> VARIAN-7<br> A former robotic butler who developed delusions of grandeur and aspirations toward criminal mastery. </div> <div class="cc-roster-card"> Mr. Frost<br> Sydney Harris is a disgruntled former janitor armed with cryogenic weaponry and a long history of humiliations. </div> <div class="cc-roster-card"> Knockout<br> Sheila Pugnatowski is a former boxer enhanced with illegal augmentations that grant her tremendous physical power. </div> <div class="cc-roster-card"> Yama<br> Kenoshi Heyatsu is a former sumo wrestler whose immense appetite is matched only by his physical strength. </div> </div> == Decline == The Desperadoes were eventually apprehended by Kodiak and Jade, though the team has periodically attempted to reunite over the years. These reformations rarely last long. Former member Knockout has consistently refused to rejoin the group, reportedly considering the Desperadoes an embarrassment even by supervillain standards. Despite their reputation as failures, the Desperadoes remain oddly persistent. Somehow, against all probability, they continue to survive the dangerous world of superhuman crime.
