The world made us monsters together.” <br>— Ice </div> Fire and Ice are the criminal identities of the Murtagh twins, Conn and Shay Murtagh, powerful parahuman brothers whose elemental abilities over heat and cold have made them one of the most dangerous superhuman duos of the modern era. United by blood, resentment, and a deep dependence upon one another, the twins have repeatedly clashed with heroes such as the Gauntlet while pursuing careers as mercenaries, thieves, and super-criminals. Though often viewed simply as opposites, the brothers are in many ways frighteningly alike. == Background == Conn and Shay Murtagh were born in Ireland and spent much of their youth moving between unstable homes, institutions, and temporary guardians after the collapse of their family life. Even before their powers emerged, the brothers relied almost entirely on one another, developing an intense bond shaped by isolation and mutual distrust of the outside world. Their lives changed permanently after a catastrophic scientific accident involving an experimental weather-control system. Exposed to unstable atmospheric energies during the disaster, the twins developed powerful and opposing elemental abilities. Conn emerged with command over heat and flame. Shay developed control over cold and ice. The public reaction to the accident transformed the brothers into feared outsiders almost overnight. Authorities, scientists, and opportunists alike sought to control, study, recruit, or weaponize them. Bitter and increasingly alienated, the twins eventually concluded that society would never truly accept them except as tools or threats. If the world insisted on fearing them, they decided they might as well become something worth fearing. == Criminal Career == The Murtaghs initially survived through theft, extortion, and small-scale criminal operations before graduating into full superhuman crime. Their powers complemented one another with terrifying effectiveness. Together they could devastate entire environments within moments, turning city streets into infernos or frozen deathtraps. Over time, Fire and Ice became sought-after mercenaries within the criminal underworld, frequently hired for intimidation, sabotage, or outright destruction. Though capable of working with larger villain organizations when necessary, the twins generally trust few people outside each other. Their repeated confrontations with the Gauntlet established them as major recurring threats during the modern heroic age. == Powers == The twins possess powerful elemental abilities linked to thermal manipulation. === Fire === Conn Murtagh, known as Fire, can generate and control intense flames and heat. * Projection of fire and thermal energy * Creation of fiery force fields * Heat-based flight and rapid movement * Resistance to heat and flame Conn’s powers are aggressive, explosive, and difficult to contain. === Ice === Shay Murtagh, known as Ice, can generate and manipulate cold, frost, and ice. * Generation of freezing energy * Creation of ice structures and barriers * Cold-based force fields * Rapid movement through icy propulsion Shay’s powers are more controlled and precise, often complementing his brother’s destructive tendencies. == Skills == Though primarily reliant on their powers, the twins are experienced criminals and survivors. * Coordinated combat tactics * Street survival and criminal experience * Skilled intimidation and escape artists * Extensive experience operating together under pressure Years of fighting side-by-side have made them exceptionally difficult opponents to separate or outmaneuver. == Personality == The contrast between the brothers is dramatic but not absolute. Conn, as Fire, is impulsive, emotional, aggressive, and openly confrontational. He enjoys displays of power and tends to react quickly and violently when provoked. Shay, as Ice, is colder, quieter, and more calculating. He often serves as the strategist of the pair, though his restraint masks a capacity for cruelty equal to his brother’s. Despite their differences, the two share a deep emotional dependence that borders on pathological. Each sees the other as the only person who truly understands what they have become. Attempts to divide or manipulate them against one another almost always fail. Beneath the arrogance and violence lies a lingering desire for acceptance that neither brother is willing to admit openly. == Legacy == Fire and Ice became one of the most recognizable villain partnerships of the modern age, embodying the dangerous combination of destructive power, emotional instability, and fierce familial loyalty that characterizes many parahuman criminals. To law enforcement and superheroes alike, the twins are especially dangerous because they rarely act alone. Where one appears, the other is never far behind. </div> CCNav
