'''Hammerhead''' is the former superhero identity of '''Delroy Durant''', a man transformed by desperate choices into a powerful hybrid of human and shark—and later, through loss and reflection, into something far rarer: a man who chose redemption.

== Origin ==

Delroy Durant lived on the edge of the law, making ends meet as a small-time thief and pickpocket. His life might have continued that way, but for one thing: his wife, Lydia, was dying.

The operation that could save her life was far beyond what Delroy could afford.

Desperate, he agreed to take part in an illegal experiment conducted by a group of criminal scientists attempting to create artificial [[Crucible:Parahumans|parahumans]]. Their method involved splicing human DNA with that of powerful animal specimens.

In Delroy’s case, a hammerhead shark.

The procedure worked.

== Transformation ==

Delroy emerged from the experiment vastly changed. His body grew in size and mass, his strength and durability increased to superhuman levels, and his physiology took on aspects of the shark whose DNA had been fused with his own.

But the power came at a cost.

His physical transformation was accompanied by instability. His strength was difficult to control, and his condition worsened as he pushed himself further. Driven by the need to secure money for Lydia’s treatment, Delroy turned to crime on a larger scale, using his new abilities to carry out increasingly dangerous operations.

Eventually, he was captured.

While in police custody, Delroy received the news that Lydia had died.
