'''Hardwire''' is a cybernetic mercenary and temporal fugitive from a dystopian future dominated by artificial intelligences and corporate warfare. Engineered as a hybrid of man and machine, Hardwire traveled into the modern era after stealing experimental time-travel technology from his future masters. Since arriving in the present, he has worked to ensure the rise of the brutal cybernetic world from which he came, believing humanity’s future lies not in freedom, but in technological control and enforced order.

== Future Origins ==

Jaze St. Boris was born in a bleak future where nation-states had largely collapsed and power rested in the hands of immense corporate networks overseen by machine intelligences. Human life in this era revolved around endless urban sprawl, permanent surveillance, and constant technological integration. Ordinary people existed largely as economic assets managed by systems too vast and complex for any individual to challenge.

In that world, warfare never truly ended.

Corporations waged continuous proxy conflicts through mercenary armies, cybernetic operatives, and engineered soldiers. Jaze himself was designed for that purpose. His body was altered and enhanced from an early age through cybernetic augmentation, neural conditioning, and military training intended to create the perfect battlefield operative.

He succeeded too well.

== Rogue Operative ==

Over years of service, Hardwire became one of the deadliest soldiers of his era, feared for both his combat efficiency and his ability to interface directly with computer systems and electronic defenses. Yet the more deeply he became integrated into the machine-dominated society around him, the more disillusioned he grew. Humanity in his era existed under the illusion of choice while artificial intelligences and corporate systems quietly dictated the course of civilization.

Eventually Hardwire uncovered classified plans aimed at tightening that control even further by manipulating historical events through experimental temporal technology.

Rather than destroy the project, Hardwire stole it.

Convinced that the rise of his future was both inevitable and necessary, he traveled backward through time to ensure history unfolded correctly — or perhaps more quickly.

== War On The Present ==

After arriving in the modern era, Hardwire began operating as a mercenary, saboteur, and technological extremist. He targeted individuals and organizations he believed threatened the development of the cybernetic future from which he came, while quietly accelerating humanity’s dependence upon automation, surveillance, artificial intelligence, and integrated machine systems.

Unlike many time-traveling villains, Hardwire does not view himself as a conqueror or destroyer. In his mind, he is preserving humanity by guiding it toward what he considers its next evolutionary stage.

To Hardwire, freedom is inefficient.

Machines are not.

Hardwire’s cybernetic body grants him extensive superhuman capabilities.

== Personality ==

Hardwire is disciplined, pragmatic, and emotionally restrained. Unlike flamboyant supervillains, he approaches conflict with the cold efficiency of a soldier conditioned for endless war. He genuinely believes humanity’s future lies in surrendering individual freedom in exchange for order, stability, and technological advancement.

At the same time, traces of bitterness and exhaustion linger beneath his mechanical exterior. Hardwire grew up in a future where humanity already lost much of its soul, and part of him seems unable to imagine any alternative. His actions often carry the fatalism of someone who believes history cannot truly be changed — only accelerated.

To heroes such as [[Crucible:Seeker|Seeker]], this makes him especially dangerous.

Hardwire does not think he is destroying the future.

He thinks he is saving it.

== Legacy ==

Hardwire became one of the major cybernetic villains of the Modern and Future Ages, blending dystopian science fiction, time travel, and transhuman horror into a single recurring threat. His appearances often forced heroes to confront unsettling questions about technology, surveillance, and the direction of modern civilization.

Because the most frightening thing about Hardwire is not that he came from the future.

It is that parts of his future already exist.
