== Background ==

Dr. Alan Voss was once regarded as a rising star in the field of biochemical engineering. Fascinated by the adaptability and resilience of insect life, Voss believed humanity could overcome disease, environmental weakness, and physical limitation through controlled integration of insect DNA into human cells. His work attracted both scientific attention and criticism, as many colleagues considered his experiments dangerously unethical.

Voss ignored the warnings.

Convinced he stood on the verge of a revolutionary breakthrough, he pushed his research further and further, eventually testing unstable genetic compounds within his own laboratory.

The inevitable accident transformed him permanently.

== Transformation ==

Exposure to his experimental serum radically altered Voss’s physiology. His metabolism accelerated to inhuman levels, his body developed chitinous armor plating, and massive insect-like wings erupted from his back. Most dangerously, the mutation rewired aspects of his nervous system and psychology, leaving him increasingly detached from ordinary human emotion and morality.

Voss emerged from the disaster physically enhanced but mentally fractured.

== Criminal Career ==

Operating from hidden laboratories and abandoned industrial facilities, he launched repeated attacks against corporations, research centers, and population centers while continuing his attempts to create new forms of engineered life.

His activities quickly brought him into conflict with [[Crucible:The Gauntlet|the Gauntlet]], who became his most persistent enemies. Their clashes often involved dangerous mutagens, swarms of engineered insect creatures, and catastrophic laboratory disasters threatening entire urban areas.

Though Hornet frequently presented himself as a visionary evolutionary prophet, many heroes believed the mutation left him profoundly unstable and increasingly incapable of distinguishing scientific ambition from megalomania.

His mutation stripped away much of his empathy and replaced it with a cold, hive-like worldview centered on survival, adaptation, and dominance. He tends to regard ordinary humans with open contempt, seeing them as weak creatures clinging to outdated ideas of morality and individuality.

At the same time, traces of the original Dr. Voss occasionally remain visible beneath the madness. Hornet still speaks passionately about science, discovery, and human potential, though those ideals have become twisted into something monstrous.

To him, evolution is not compassionate.

It is merciless.

== Legacy ==

Hornet became one of the defining science-mutant villains of the modern era and an important early enemy of [[Crucible:The Gauntlet|the Gauntlet]]. His stories blended genetic horror, scientific hubris, and insectile nightmare imagery into a recurring warning about the dangers of uncontrolled experimentation.
