'''Ichiban''' is the demonic leader of [[Crucible:The Eight-Headed Shadow|the Eight-Headed Shadow]], a murderous ninja brotherhood steeped in occult rites and ancient violence. Once a mortal ninja named '''Kato Surugi''', Ichiban became possessed by infernal forces after failing the order during a mission. Reborn as something no longer entirely human, he rose to become one of the most feared assassins in the modern age and a major enemy of [[Crucible:Avenger|Avenger]].

== Background ==

Kato Surugi was originally a promising operative within [[Crucible:The Eight-Headed Shadow|the Eight-Headed Shadow]], the clandestine ninja organization once led by the feared [[Crucible:Black Scorpion|Black Scorpion]]. Like all members of the order, Surugi was trained from childhood in stealth, assassination, infiltration, and martial combat. Though highly skilled, however, he possessed one flaw the brotherhood considered unforgivable.

Fear.

During a mission that ended in disaster, Surugi hesitated at a critical moment and was branded a coward by the leadership of the Eight-Headed Shadow. Within the order’s brutal philosophy, cowardice represented spiritual weakness severe enough to justify annihilation.

The punishment inflicted upon him was far worse than death.

== Transformation ==

Through dark occult rites practiced in secret by the brotherhood, Surugi’s soul was torn from his body. The empty shell that remained was then offered to demonic entities bound to the Eight-Headed Shadow’ hidden traditions. Something accepted the invitation.

What emerged afterward called itself '''Ichiban''':Number One. The old masters despised the name seeing it as vulgar and modern. But Kato Surugi embraced it deliberately. He wanted no ancient title, no inherited honorific. He intended to be remembered as the only head that mattered.

The reborn warrior retained fragments of Surugi’s memories and combat training, but his personality had become twisted by madness, cruelty, and supernatural influence. The Eight-Headed Shadow transformed him from a failed ninja into a living weapon possessed by infernal power.

Among the brotherhood, Ichiban quickly became both feared and revered.

== Rise Of The New Eight-Headed Shadow ==

After the downfall of [[Crucible:Black Scorpion|Black Scorpion]] and the defeat of the original Eight-Headed Shadow organization by [[Crucible:Avenger|Avenger]], the surviving remnants of the clan fragmented into rival factions and hidden cells.

Ichiban ultimately reunited many of them through terror, brutality, and sheer supernatural dominance.

Under his leadership, the Eight-Headed Shadow became darker and more openly mystical than before. Traditional ninja techniques blended with demonic rituals, occult assassinations, and supernatural warfare. Many former members believed the organization had ceased being merely a ninja clan and become something closer to a cult.

Avenger’s repeated conflicts with Ichiban became legendary within criminal and occult circles alike.

Ichiban possesses both supernatural physical abilities and demonic enhancements.

The tattoo covering parts of Ichiban’s body is actually a bound demon fused into his flesh. The creature can move across his skin, speak independently, lash out physically, and occasionally manifest partially outside his body during combat.

Even before his transformation, Surugi was an elite ninja operative.

Combined with his demonic powers, these abilities make Ichiban extraordinarily dangerous in close combat.

== Personality ==

Ichiban is cruel, fanatically disciplined, and profoundly unstable. The remnants of Kato Surugi’s humanity appear buried beneath layers of demonic corruption and rage. He despises weakness above all things because weakness, in his mind, was what condemned him originally.

At the same time, Ichiban possesses the cold charisma common to many cult leaders. He rules through fear, mysticism, and displays of supernatural power, convincing followers that he has transcended ordinary humanity.

Whether Surugi’s original soul still exists somewhere beneath the possession remains unknown.

Some believe the demon merely wears his memories like a mask.

== Legacy ==

Ichiban became one of the defining ninja villains of the modern age and one of [[Crucible:Avenger|Avenger]]’s most feared enemies. His rise transformed [[Crucible:Eight-Headed Shadow|the Eight-Headed Shadow]] from a hidden criminal order into something far darker and more supernatural.

Among assassins and occult investigators alike, Ichiban is remembered less as a man than as a warning: sometimes the worst monsters are not summoned.

They are created through punishment, fear, and the deliberate destruction of a human soul.
